MEET OUR NEW VPE + VPF! VPE: LUCINDA GLEESPEN Hi! I’m Lucinda, I use any pronouns, and I’ve lived in the House of Apollo since August 2021. Some of you may know me as the person who MC’ed Apollo’s last few open mics or as Apollo’s membership officer. I’m currently a junior at MSU, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Human Behavior and Social Services. When I’m not serving as your VPE, I’m working as a research assistant. In my free time, I enjoy reading comics, collecting zines and small books, roller skating, and sewing. My favorite bands are Belle and Sebastian, DEVO, and Dead Kennedys, and my go-to karaoke song is Scotty Doesn’t Know.

I am incredibly excited to be serving as your new Vice President of Education. I have loved my time in the SHC thus far, and I have always wanted to be more involved within the organization. I think that education is central to the growth, longevity, and purpose of a housing cooperative—without it, we aren’t that different from any other housing group. As VPE, I look forward to getting the Pine Press back up and running, empowering education officers, and promoting educational efforts throughout our community (look forward to some new trainings coming your way soon!). Also, I’m going to get the February Pine Press out in February or die trying (if you’re reading this, I succeeded!).

Speaking of which, you should submit to the Pine Press! If you want to make sure that your article goes in a certain issue, make sure to submit before the 15th of that month.

You can submit pretty much anything, even just photos of your pet. Remember, we once published an article of the author ranking the muppets by how much they wanted to have sex with them. Anything is possible.

MEET OUR NEW VPE + VPF! VPF: JAKE MANTELA Hello, my name is Jake Mantela. I have been living at Hedrick for nearly two years now and graduated from MSU in December 2022.

In addition to serving as VPF for our organization, I work as a botanist professionally. I won't be in Michigan for much longer (I have goals of moving to another part of the country)! To Future Readers of the Pine Press Anonymous SHC Member Photo Credit: Jordan Kovach Maybe you’re like me, and you enjoy looking back at past Pine Presses. I love seeing what co-opers were doing, thinking, in the decades that came before me. Maybe this has been reprinted and you’re reading this in your current issue. Either way, I have a message for you.

Today is February 18th, 2023. On the 13th, our community suffered a tragedy: a man entered MSU’s campus and started shooting, killing three and injuring five. In the aftermath of this tragedy, many of us have a new or renewed fire to fight to make sure that this kind of violence is no longer normalized in the United States. We have protested, planned strikes, called our representatives, and donated. In some ways, it feels like the community has come together in solidarity against gun violence and the policies that allow it to thrive. There is an energy in the air, a united call for change.

I have seen this energy before, however, and it can be hard to sustain. People forget, people lose hope, and people go back to their normal lives. Frankly, I am happy that you likely don’t have this energy, because it means that on some level, you feel safe.

Many of us look forward to feeling that way again. But as the energy fades, many attempts to make change lose steam. People stop fighting, and gun violence becomes another background issue that we are left to resign ourselves to.

Please, if gun control laws have not improved drastically, if mass shootings are still normalized, if the government has not addressed the societal issues that help produce gun violence, continue fighting. Organize, vote, donate, and don’t support people or businesses that support/receive support from the NRA. Find the fire to keep caring.

Favorite Co-op Memories

Here are some of our members' favorite co-op memories!

My first room prog at Ohaus!!!! -Jo :) (Orion) Hearing Co-op live music for the first time in Fall '21...I knew I had found something special. -Jake (Hedrick) wayyyy too many to pick from but one in particular is the 2021 U of M vs MSU game on halloween. It was during a time when Howland was still pretty locked down but we were all outside tailgating in our own front yard and for some reason we were wearing onesies. A lot of us were sitting on the roof and people were on the porch too- it was basically the whole house. A photographer came by and asked if they could take a pic and we said yes. HOW TO MAKE CANNABUTTER

DECARB YOUR BUD

GRIND IT UP

MELT BUTTER

HOW TO DECARB BUD IN OVEN Break your flower into small pieces and place it on parchment paper.

Start with about 20-25 minutes of baking.

Add time as needed until your marijuana is a darker, but still green, shade.

PROPERLY GRIND YOUR BUD Grind weed with hands or grinder Don't grind too much to avoid bits of weed in final product.

MELT BUTTER IN PAN ON STOVE Add equal parts butter and water in a sauce pan You can still make a quality infused butter without water but the water helps keep the butter from burning.

Fully melt butter down until simmer.

HOW TO INFUSE BUTTER

INFUSE THAT STRAIN THE GOOD STUFF OUT STORE THE BUTTER

Add decarboxylated weed into butter and keep it simmering Simmer for 1-3 hours stirring frequently (~15 mins is adequate) Butter should be 165-200 degrees F (optional: you can you a candy thermometer)

HOW TO STRAIN BUTTER Now that the butter is infused with THC you need to get the chunks of weed out.

Pour mixture of bud and butter through a cheese cloth to strain bud out.

Pour into whatever container you want to store the butter in

HOW TO STORE CANNA-BUTTER Store in an airtight container (or you can use plastic wrap on a bowl) Keep in refrigerator if there is still water wait for the butter to solidify and pour the water out
