Democracy Governance

➔ Carrying Charges Increase

◆ The board recently approved carrying charges for the 2025-2026 contract year This was a result of the resolution passed back in April of having more oversight over the budget as a board. As the budget was announced to the board, there was an error in the community co-op charges increase, giving board reps the option to revote on the charges. It’s been resolved by the board that campus co-ops will remain the same, going from $525 to $535, approximately a 2% increase. For community co-ops, charges will increase from $330 to $345, a 4.5% increase.

➔ Income Verification Screening

◆ The member services team is meeting with members of New Comm. to develop a process for income verification screening. This development will help curate a standardized system for future members entering the co-ops, as it’s included in our Bylaws as an affordable housing provider

Lansing River Trail Cleanup

On Saturday July 26th, the Education Committee hosted the first Lansing River Trail cleanup event of this term. 13 members were in attendance, and almost 10 industrial sized trash bags were filled with litter found in the area. The team also made an effort to sort E-waste into separate containers.

During the event, we had several community members thank us for our work. Even better, several of these individuals asked for information about the SHC. Engaging in more community service from here on could be a great way to spread the word about the coops and expand our outreach.

Lansing River Trail Cleanup (Continued)

As I continue planning events for the coming year, there will be plenty of opportunities to participate in community service events. These will include more litter cleanups, drives, and group work at local food banks and homeless shelters. I encourage members to participate whenever possible. These kinds of events are a great way to spread the word about cooperative living while also making an active impact on our surrounding community

-VPE Onyx

Volunteers from the event came from Bower, Phoenix, New Community, Howland, and The Shire. The house with the most attendance was Bower House, so they will be receiving $100 towards house funds. If you want the chance to win funds for your house, try to get housemates out to the next event!

This month, I wanted to talk about how exactly capitalism works and why it sucks. This edition will be pretty heavy on the theory and some of the concepts can be complicated. I always encourage further reading and education on these concepts, and I’ll include some recommendations at the end of the article.

What is Capitalism?

In contrast with socialism, we can understand capitalism as the private ownership of the means of production. Those means of production are then used to generate profit for the owners. Back in the 1700s, this sounded great in theory! However, we know after over 200 years of living under a capitalist mode of production that, for the vast majority of humanity, doesn’t work in practice. We’ll discuss the origin of value, the classes that emerge and their relations within capitalism, as well as social mechanisms and imperialism. But first we’ll need to define a couple things: Property and Commodities.

Property, of course, is anything that is owned by someone. There are two kinds of property: Personal Property and Private Property. Personal property refers to the goods you’d use on a daily basis - goods such as your toothbrush, phone, coffee mug, car, furniture, lighter, rolling papers, yaoi collection, etc. Private property, on the other hand, is the ownership of productive forces. These include factories, machines, farms, trains, anything that can be used to create or distribute commodities.

✮CommieColumn✮

Commodities are one of the central concepts of capitalism. Commodities are goods and services that are exchanged within a market in order to make a profit. The value of the commodity is determined by the combined value of the natural resources, labor time, and means of production used to create it. A commodity’s value can stem from several aspects of its creation.

The capitalist production of commodities can be expressed in an equation:

M: Investment C: Commodity

M*: Investment + Profit

A capitalist makes an investment into producing a commodity. They take the commodity, sell it for a greater value than what it cost to produce it, resulting in a profit.

This equation can be expanded to show greater detail in regards to where the “profit” comes from.

L: Labor Time

P: Means of Production R: Natural Resources

Producing a commodity involves buying the natural resources that the commodity is made of (R), and then investing in the labor (L) and production process (P) to turn said resources into said commodity.

The value of the resources and means of production are static. However, labor is what changes the others into the commodity form - labor is what makes the profit.

But what do we mean when talking about value? An equation is useless if we don’t have anything quantified.

M
M → (L + P + R) → M*

✮CommieColumn✮

What is Value?

There are a few different forms of value, all with different applications:

- Use-Value: the utility of a commodity (i.e. a coat keeps you warm, water keeps you alive).

- Surplus-Value: The added work done to a commodity to create it. (the profit created by the labor)

- Exchange-Value: The quantitative form of a commodity in relation to another commodity (i.e. 1 coat is worth 2 yards of linen/cloth) (Exchange-Value is the combination of Use-Value and Surplus-Value)

These values mainly come from the physical characteristics of the aforementioned natural resources, and how we can utilize them. The value can be affected by how common the commodity resource is - also known as the supplyand how much the society needs it - also known as the demand. Contrary to capitalist theories, however, supply and demand are not the end-all-be-all of value. For example - water is in great abundance in some areas, yet, it does not affect the value of water, because its use-value outweighs its supply/demand ratio.

✮CommieColumn✮

What is Value? (continued)

The equation we talked about outlines the M* of a commodity - AKA the exchange value. We can see the equation work with a simple example: Let's say you - a capitalist - buy a factory for $20, and 10 yards of linen for $10, and then you hire 3 workers to work 2 hours each to make the linen into 5 coats that sell for a total of $40. The 2 hours of work that was done has generated a total of $10 of value in the form of the coat. Profit is generated by the worker’s labor. Hence the name: Labor Theory of Value.

The capitalist then steals $4 worth of the worker’s labor value for themselves, and uses the remaining 6 dollars to pay each of the 3 workers $1 per hour. In simple terms, this is what exploitation is. The other $30 is used for maintenance and growth of production, due to the factory being a one time purchase. This equation, though greatly simplified, is what creates a class structure within capitalism, and the resulting class relations.

Capitalism itself is fundamentally built off of this class structure, which, at the same time, is constantly undermining the conditions necessary for its own functioning. This is known as “the great contradiction of capitalism”. The capitalists (owners or Bourgeoisie) want to extract as much value from the workers’ (proletariat) labor as possible. While the Proletariat, on the other hand, want to reduce the value they are exploited for as much as possible.

Capitalism also manages to undermine itself in the way that the Bourgeoisie must fight one another at the same time as the working class. If a capitalist does not do whatever is necessary to grow their empires and gauge as much profit as physically possible, they will be either absorbed or destroyed by their fellow capitalists. The latter forcing them into the working class, the rich’s worst fear. This is, of course, the competitive market you’ve heard of, and the culprit behind things such as Imperialism, Monopolies, and the need for infinite economic growth.

✮CommieColumn✮

What is Imperialism?

What we’ve covered so far is the economic foundations of a capitalist society. What we’re about to discuss is the superstructure of capitalism, or the consequences that follow a private, for-profit economy.

The point of a competition is for there to be a winner. This is true in economics as well. The “competitive” market ultimately ends with a single entity controlling the entire economic sector for their own personal profit. This is a feature of capitalism, not a bug. Historically, the state has stepped in to prevent this. However, companies have found ways around this by dividing markets into territories, building trust companies, creating front organizations, etc. Through over 200 years of monopoly capitalism, it has proved the impotence and inability of a bourgeois state to combat this tendency.

All in all, individual markets are finite, and will ultimately be exhausted by capital exploitation. And when said markets have been exhausted (or the labor starts to demand rights), companies venture out to new markets. We call this Imperialism.

Imperialism has been a part of capitalism even before it had fully formed. Imperialism is the policy of exploiting foreign markets for the benefit of the core (home country/metropole). There have been three primary expressions of imperialism:

- Exploitative Colonialism: The conquest of an area/people for extraction of resources and labor value from the colony to the core. (i.e. British ruled India, Scramble for Africa)

- Settler Colonialism: the extermination/displacement of a people for conquest of their land to build a new market and extract resources. (i.e. United States, Israel, Apartheid South Africa)

- Neo-Colonialism: The use of finance and diplomacy to force dependency of another nation to the colonizing power and its private interests for exploitation of “cheap labor” and natural resources. (International Monetary Fund, Françafrique, Marshal Plan)

✮CommieColumn✮

What is Imperialism? (Continued)

All of these forms have dealt a tremendous amount of suffering and death, both human and environmental. And it must be recognized that all nations that are deemed “developed” today (Western Europe and North America) benefit from one or more of these forms of colonialism. With the largest benefactor right now being where we live, the United States. It's why our clothes are made in Bangladesh, our coffee from Ghana, our oil from Iraq, our microchips from Taiwan, our lithium from the Congo - the list goes on.

I’ll end this section with a quote from Michael Parenti regarding the “third world”:

“The third world is not poor. You don’t go to poor countries to make money. There are very few poor countries in this world. Most countries are rich. The Philippines are rich, Brazil is rich, Mexico is rich, Chile is rich. Only the people are poor. But there’s billions to be made there, to be carved out, and to be taken. There’s been billions for 400 years. The capitalist European and North American powers have carved out and taken the [natural resources], the slaves, and the cheap labor. - These countries are not underdeveloped, they’re over-exploited!”

- Michael Parenti "US interventionism, the 3rd world, and the USSR", University of Colorado, April 15th 1986.

✮CommieColumn✮

Capitalism is an incredibly complicated beast that we can further dissect in later editions. We’ve talked about what capitalism is, how it works, its ramifications on society and the world, and how it is a system built upon theft and destruction.

Capitalism may seem as if it is impossibly powerful. It may also seem as if it is the only thing that works. Neither are true. Capitalism is in crisis. And it’s been replaced with a system by and for the working class dozens of times with remarkable social improvements that followed. We just have to remember it’s within our power to do it.

What Happened to AmeriCorps??

Some of you may have noticed a few changes around the office this summer With Marty leaving, and the onboarding of new staff members, it has been a time of transition for the SHC office. In addition to the recent adaptation of the Member Services Coordinator role, there has been one other major change. AmeriCorps, an organization which has worked with the SHC for years, has been terminated.

In April 2025, AmeriCorps programs were suspended nationally and there was a lawsuit over federal funding. Although a judge later ordered reinstatement, the Ingham County Health Department chose not to resume the program. Because of this, the terms for our AmeriCorps members were cut short, ending in late April. After the termination of the AmeriCorps program, the SHC provided temporary housing and subsidized income support to ease the transition after termination. Both AmeriCorps members continue to be a part of the SHC community as members and independent contractors, while also pursuing opportunities outside of the SHC. The SHC is still exploring how to continue the work they began, particularly the Hospitality Coordinator model that Andrew helped initiate. On behalf of the staff and executive committee, I would like to thank these two individuals for all of the work they have done during their time at the Spartan Housing Cooperative.

Andrew

Andrew began his work at the SHC as the All Nations coordinator He then went on to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA focused on hospitality and inclusion. During his time in this position, he furnished and activated the Hospitality Suite at All Nations. Andrew also worked to welcome new interventional and low-income members, supporting orientation, community integration, and inclusion practices. Overall, Andrew played a big role in evolving the concept of a hospitality coordinator and has the stage for future work. Although he no longer holds a staff or informal role with the SHC, we are grateful for the foundation that Andrew has helped to build.

Charlie

Charlie served as an AmeriCorps member through the Ingham County Health Department. Her role focused on office labor and volunteer coordination, as well as grant writing support. Charlie also played a role in East Lansing Pride, helping AJ to organize the Queer Reality Project. Recently, she has been assisting with the upkeep of the Regent Street properties during pre-renovation and transition phases.

Thanks to both of these individuals for your work!

Bower Bread Bower Bread Bower Bread

You may have seen sexy pictures of delicious bread from Bower House. One of the house chores at Bower is to bake bread every Sunday to reduce grocery costs and increase homemade food products. I wanted to share my recipe with the other houses because it is SUPER cheap and easy, and tastes delicious. The recipe is pretty time consuming (plan for it to take all day), but if you do it right you will have some of the tastiest white bread you have ever eaten!

Ingredients

● 2 cups warm water (110 degrees F)

● ⅔ cup white sugar

● 1 ½ tbsp active dry yeast

● ¼ cup vegetable oil

● 1 ½ tsp salt

● 6 cups all purpose, or bread flour

This recipe makes 2 loaves!!

Directions

1. Stir to dissolve sugar in warm water in a large bowl. Once sugar is dissolved, gently stir in the yeast. Let the mixture sit to allow the yeast to proof about 5-10 minutes. It should look like a creamy foam has formed on top of the

water. If the water is too cold, or if you are working on a cold surface, it will take longer for the yeast to activate, if at all!!

2. Add oil and salt to the bowl, then stir in the flour one cup at a time. The dough is going to get super thick towards the end of the flour, and you may need to use your hands to fully combine

3. Empty the bowl onto a lightly floured clean counter and knead the dough by hand. The dough should look smooth when it is done, I am usually at it for a while, more kneading is not going to hurt anything

4. Clean your mixing bowl, and pour a few tablespoons of oil in. Add the dough ball and flip around to make sure it is fully lubed up before covering the bowl with a damp cloth and allowing it to sit for 1-1.5 hours. If you are working in a cold environment, or if you want the dough to be extra fluffy, preheat your oven to the lowest setting. Once it hits 100 degrees, turn the oven off, and set the uncovered bowl in the oven to rise, just make sure you leave the oven open a crack

5. Once the dough has at least doubled in size, punch it in the center to release some air. Knead the dough for a couple minutes and divide in half. You can shape into loaves, do a braid, or just set it in a greased 9x5 loaf pan. Allow the dough to rise another 30 minutes, until it is peaking over the edge of the pan a bit or doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F

6. Bake the loaves until golden brown for about 30 minutes. This isn't necessary, but I like to rub butter on the tops when they come out of the oven for a lil extra flavor. Make sure to let the loaves cool completely before slicing!!
