CLUB NEWS BRAD SHUPE GENERAL MANAGER

Early fall has been a great time at the Club! We are committed to creating new and innovative twists on traditional events, and October was certainly a fun month. We started a new tradition with our “Pool Pawty,” celebrating the close of the pool season with our four-legged best friends. The Member-Guest featured a Drive-Through Hospitality Station that literally took guests through the Pavilion. Our Instagram account also had a post surpassing one million views, thanks to our co-host Mitchell Mazzei and the content capturing his remarkable round of 62.

2027 Board Election The election process will begin in December. Please consider serving your club in a leadership role on the Board of Governors. We meet over dinner monthly with ownership to partner on issues ranging form the strategic direction of the club to planning and executing all club programming. If you have any questions, Katy Flaskerud is a great source of knowledge and can be reached at piccchairman@gmail.com or Brad Shupe bshupe@pineislandcc.com.

Finally, we wrapped up the month with a new signature Halloween event featuring a Haunted Hayride. Dozens of children, dressed in their best costumes, filled their candy bags with treats from more than a dozen creatively decorated trunks. Thank you to everyone who participated and brought the energy and enthusiasm that make these special experiences possible at your Club! The energy inside and outside the Club will continue with several exciting events, all easily accessible through our new App or highlighted in this newsletter. But let's focus on what's going to be happening outside the Clubhouse, specifically a renovation of the patio and lawn area adjacent to the Pavilion and Men's Card Room. This has been one of the most underutilized areas of the Club, and we are committed to transforming it into a welcoming space where you can feel comfortable, relax, and enjoy time with family and friends. continued

As you can see in the pictures below, the redesigned patio will feature two large firepits, a low wall accented with tall timber elements to create separation from the lawn, new tile flooring, and beautiful new furniture to bring all the elements together in a warm and inviting setting. Construction will begin over the next month, and we look forward to having everything ready for you when spring arrives! I encourage you to keep reading and learn more about all the great things happening at your Club. Jim shares some insightful information about frost and winter conditions, Chef Jason introduces five exciting new menu items, and Brandon has put together a terrific lineup of upcoming events. I always look forward to seeing you at your Club!

COURSE UPDATE JIM SCHRAMM GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Tournament season is coming to an end, and we will soon begin seeing our warm-season grasses go dormant. As temperatures cool and the green color begins to fade, we are taking extra precautions to protect the turf during this transition. How we care for the plant as it enters dormancy can have a big impact on the quality of the turf when it begins growing again in the spring. Once our warm-season grasses are fully dormant, our primary focus will shift to protecting the putting greens throughout the winter months. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make these seasonal adjustments. Our goal is to provide the best possible playing conditions while protecting the golf course for the seasons ahead. Below is an article from the USGA, written by George Waters, that provides some additional insight.

“Frost Delays - What Every Golfer Should Know” How often your morning is affected by frost delays depends not just on the weather, but a variety of factors. Here’s what every golfer should know about frost: Crunchy grass is vulnerable to damage Golf course turf is normally resilient to traffic, but when ice crystals form inside the plants, they become brittle. Walking or driving over frost-covered grass can rupture plant cells, leading to dead turf, or the plants may be weakened without immediately showing the effects. It can take grass more than a month to recover from this damage. Location is everything You look out the kitchen window and see no signs of frost, only to find a frost delay when you get to the course. Know that frost can linger in colder microclimates long after other areas have thawed. North-facing slopes, low-lying areas and areas sheltered from the wind are especially likely to remain covered with frost. When in doubt, call the golf shop to check on course conditions before leaving home.

COURSE UPDATE JIM SCHRAMM GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Closely mown turf is at high risk Frost damage can occur throughout the course, but it poses the greatest risk to closely mown turf. Putting greens are particularly vulnerable because they experience the most concentrated traffic. A foursome typically takes 300 steps or more per green; with frost present, each step could cause serious damage. Looks can be deceiving No signs of frost on the first tee doesn’t mean an immediate “all clear” sign. If frost remains in unavoidable early in the round, the course must remain closed. Also remember that once the frost is totally clear, the maintenance staff will still need time to catch up on course preparation before play can begin. More light goes a long way Shade extends frost delays by preventing sunlight from melting the frost. Pruning or removing trees that shade primary playing surfaces can improve the course’s overall health and reduce the duration of frost delays. This is especially true on the first few holes, where the shade from a handful of trees can keep an entire course closed.

Practice Facility Update The driving range tee will remain on mats throughout the winter. Normally, we would overseed the range tee this time of year, but we are skipping that process due to the immaturity of the existing turf and its root system. Allowing the grass additional time to establish will give us a better chance of having a healthy, mature teeing surface next season. We are also asking members to limit their use of the short game facility to chipping and short pitch shots. Please refrain from hitting full wedge shots or taking large divots. These precautions will help preserve the turf and maintain the best possible conditions for everyone to enjoy moving forward. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
