May at Pine Island – The Best Month in Golf

There’s something special about May—it truly is the greatest month of the year for golf. The course comes alive, conditions peak, and the energy around the club is hard to beat.

Jim and his team have been working in sync with Mother Nature, and the results speak for themselves The golf course not only looks outstanding, but it’s playing exactly how we all love it—firm and fast. While we all recognize Jim’s talent in agronomy, what stands out even more is his leadership. He’s built and developed a team of 11 highly motivated and passionate grounds professionals who take great pride in delivering exceptional conditions every day.

Speaking of “firm,” our new pickleball court has fully cured and is nearing the finish line. Nets, final coating, and striping are scheduled for the third week of May, and we are on track to have the courts ready for play by June 1 It’s an exciting addition to the club, and we look forward to seeing it quickly become a favorite gathering spot.

Looking ahead, our next major focus will be improvements to the golf course Jim will be sharing a more detailed timeline soon, but the project is expected to take approximately eight weeks and will include enhancements to the practice area as well as tee work on all Par 3 holes These improvements are part of our continued commitment to elevating the overall golf experience at Pine Island.

Lastly, I encourage you to take a moment to read the article introducing Steve Kerr as our new Head Golf Professional. We were fortunate to have an incredibly strong pool of candidates, including seven outstanding finalists. Steve distinguished himself not only with his experience and expertise, but with the intangibles that align so well with our culture. I am confident you will share in my excitement as he begins leading our golf operation into the future.

STEVE KERR

Pine Island Country Club is excited to welcome our new Head Golf Professional, Steve Kerr.

Steve joins us as a PGA Class A Professional with nearly 20 years of experience, having worked at private, resort, and public clubs across the country. While his background is impressive, what stood out most throughout the process was who he is as a person someone who genuinely cares about people, the game of golf, and the experience we create for our members every day.

A graduate of NC State, where he excelled in the Professional Golf Management program, Steve has strong roots in this region and a genuine commitment to the Charlotte area. He also has a long-standing relationship with Pine Island, which made this opportunity especially meaningful for him. Recently, Steve moved back to Charlotte to be closer to his “very serious” girlfriend Kelyn and has been honing his skills as a Master Club Fitter and Builder at Club Champion.

Professionally, Steve has had the opportunity to learn from and work alongside multiple award-winning PGA Professionals, including two PGA Professionals of the Year, and brings those high standards with him to Pine Island. Just as importantly, he is a strong leader who is passionate about building a positive, teamfirst culture and developing those around him.

Steve is also an accomplished instructor, with over 2,000 hours of teaching experience. He is committed to helping golfers of all skill levels enjoy and improve their game, while continuing to grow our junior programs and create a welcoming, engaging learning environment. As an active player who competed in the 2022 PGA Professional Championship, he brings both credibility and a strong connection to the competitive side of the game

From an operations standpoint, Steve understands that it’s often the little things that matter most being visible and engaged, keeping the pace of play moving, maintaining a great practice environment, and ensuring a consistent, first-class experience each time you visit the club He is also excited to bring energy and creativity to our tournaments and golf events, while respecting the traditions that make Pine Island special

Equally important, Steve values the relationships that make a club truly great He is committed to being present, approachable, and engaged with our membership and your families He brings a great deal of energy and enthusiasm, along with a willingness to listen, learn, and understand what makes this place so meaningful to all of you

I joined Pine Island Country Club to meet new people and make some new friendships. Since my husband passed away in March, I find myself sitting at home watching TV or playing games on my cell phone and realized I need something more -- so, Pine Island.

I'm looking forward to getting back to playing golf on a more regular basis while meeting new ladies. I'm also interested in learning to play Pickleball as it looks like a lot of fun!

I am a USBC registered Bowling Coach and I coach youth bowlers on Saturdays at George Pappas Liberty Lanes in Gastonia. I love it!!!!

Jon Williams

Raised in the UK after being born in the US, I’ve recently made my way back stateside, bringing a global perspective shaped by life on both sides of the Atlantic. I work in global payroll which keeps me busy.

Outside of work, I’m an avid golf enthusiast—though I don’t get out on the course as often as I’d like. When I do get a chance to unwind, you’ll usually find me with a cold Corona in hand.

Our family has resided in the Mountain Island Lake area for over 20 years. As a recreational golfer I have been familiar with Pine Island Country Club for many years, but only after recently retiring did I feel that we would have the time to utilize the amenities of a private club

With its proximity, condition and reputation, Pine Island Country Club was a natural fit We look forward to enjoying the amenities of the Club together as a family, and in particular spending time enjoying the golf course with our kids who are just beginning to experience the game. Interestingly, Jennifer’s family is in the “country club business”. Her great Aunt and Uncle founded Bogey Hills Country Club in St. Charles, MO, which has operated for over 60 years as a family-owned private club and a centerpiece of that community and their family’s legacy.

Cody& Siobhan Maiolo

Siobhan and Cody are excited to join Pine Island and take advantage of all the clubs social membership has to offer— from social events and community gatherings to relaxing by the pool and spending time on the pickleball courts. As transplants to Charlotte, we are especially looking forward to meeting new families and building lasting connections.

Fun fact: we are getting married in March of next year and are excited to celebrate this new chapter both at the club and beyond.

Brandon Ausley

I joined Pine Island Country Club to join a community of young professionals with a shared interest in golf. Plus, my three-yearold saw the slide at the pool and surprise, surprise he got his way. I grew up in the Raleigh/Durham area and went to undergraduate and graduate school at UNCW.

Moved to Charlotte in 2011 and started my accounting career as a CPA. Other than the two years that KPMG sent me to Sydney, Australia for a 2-year international rotation, I have lived in Charlotte. I am most looking forward to the social events and taking my friends lunch money at my home course

Connor DeMaine

I’m a Charlotte native and become an avid golfer in recent years, most recently visited New Zealand to play some amazing golf courses. Excited to join Pine Island.

Dave & Maureen Malick

My wife Maureen and I have been happily married for 36 years and recently moved to the Charlotte area from Pittsburgh to be near our grown daughters and grandchildren. We belonged to a golf country club in Pittsburgh, and enjoyed the professional networking, golf events, family-centric activities as well as the food / social gatherings. I am looking forward to playing in a wellmaintained / challenging golf course, meeting / golfing with current members.

I look forward to making new connections / friendships and memories at Pine Island CC. I currently hold the role of Sr. National Account Manager for Carrier Corporation. In this sales role, I manage a strategic group of national homebuilders. One interesting fact about me is that I played college basketball and during our 5-year reunion, there was a halftime contest during the men’s basketball game. I was randomly selected to play in the contest whereby I had to make a layup, foul shot, 3-point shot and half-court shot rebounding my own ball in 30 seconds. I was able to successfully to do this and won a car.

I joined Pine Island Golf & Country Club to become part of a golf community and connect with fellow members who share a passion for the game. I’m especially looking forward to meeting new people, spending more time on the course, and getting my kids involved in junior golf so it can become something we enjoy together as a family.

Outside of golf, I value time with family and friends and am always up for new experiences, whether that’s traveling or trying something new with my kids.

COURSE UPDATE

After a very dry month and a half we are finally starting to see some rainfall! Things are greening up at Pine Island and the golf course is starting to take shape Greens were on full display for the Pine Cup and should continue to perform at a high level through the spring. We will continue to drive cultural practices as we gear up for the summer months. Focusing on plant health now will help lead to a successful summer.

On the horizon we have a few projects lined up for par 3 tees and the practice facility to help improve the turf quality, increase teeing ground, and provide more hitting surface to practice your short game.

Our continued goal is to provide excellent course conditions while enhancing the overall experience for our members.
