Brad Shupe, General Manager I am genuinely excited about what lies ahead for Pine Island in midway through 2025, it has been a pleasure getting to know becoming immersed in the culture that makes Pine Island so youthful energy, strong sense of camaraderie, and shared are truly distinctive — and infectious.

As we look to the future, our focus will be on further elevating the overall member experience while making thoughtful, strategic investments in the long-term success of the club. Key priorities include: Collaborating with the Board, ownership, and membership to identify and advance strategic capital improvements. Projects currently under consideration include: Renovating Par 3 tee boxes to expand size and provide level surfaces with consistent Bermuda grass. Enhancing the practice area by expanding its footprint, adding additional targets, and relocating the practice bunker to improve safety and allow for fairway bunker practice. Reroofing all club buildings. Refreshing the clubhouse interior through painting and targeted “nip-and-tuck” updates. Replacing three heating/air conditioning units.

Leading and supporting our staff to ensure a consistently high level of service that makes every member feel welcomed, comfortable, understood, and appreciated. Curating a dynamic golf and social calendar that engages the full membership and reflects the vibrant spirit of Pine Island. Providing Jim and his team with the tools and resources necessary to maintain the exceptional playing conditions you expect and deserve.

I am energized by the opportunities ahead and deeply grateful to work alongside such an engaged and enthusiastic membership as we continue to strengthen everything that makes Pine Island an exceptional club.

COURSE UPDATE Jim Schramm, Golf Course Superintendent I would like to start the year off by introducing the newest member of the Greens and Grounds Department, Fletcher. Standards are set high for him as he embarks on his journey of becoming a working golf course dog. There will be some growing pains with a new puppy. I ask you please do not feed him as I will be doing everything in my power to train him to follow my commands, avoid golf balls, and chase off geese. Please feel free to say hello and give him a few pets as I feel it is always better to have a social dog on property. The golf course is holding up very well. The collar project last year brought new life to our green surrounds. Greens are performing better as we continue to implement our desired agronomic programs, so we ask that the members follow all frost restrictions to allow for optimal performance as we head into growing season. As of now, our plan is to continue the same cultural practices that we performed last year. We will topdress occasionally throughout the winter and increase that to every other week as we begin to truly grow. Aerification is scheduled for March 16th and 17th . This will be the same size core as last spring and should heal quicker being performed later in the month. The week prior to aerification, we plan on using a 6” cross tine to break surface tension and create a channel for roots to grow. This was performed last year and has little to no effect on play. We are currently making our way through the property and removing any dead trees, along with a few that cause shade issues to tees and greens. The month of January will be more limb work and we will have a lift going through the property. We want to apologize now for the piles of limbs that will be left under trees. We will be bringing in a chipper shortly after we begin to remove this material. Poa Annua Control is always a concern this time of year. Tees will be sprayed in the next week and a wall-to-wall application of pre- and post-emergent herbicide will be applied to the entire property in the middle of February. On Mondays that we spray around the greens we will ask that there is no golf at all as it will kill Bentgrass if tracked on. Our team will inform the membership of those dates as it occurs. The Greens and Grounds Department enjoys providing the best product possible for the members of Pine Island and are working to continue to improve every year. David Lackey, Director of Golf Happy New Year! Every year it seems that January 1st rolls around and we all wonder where the past year went. 2026 is no exception! I am excited and looking forward to leading the Pine Island team into the new year. In my career, I have been fortunate to have quite a few trusted mentors and “attention to detail” has always been a vital part of a successful game plan. It is my goal to bring that mantra into the golf operations. As in the past, we want to be member and service focused, and constantly strive to improve in those, and all areas, of the operation. I also value feedback - good, bad or just “fyi”. I love extra sets of eyes and ears! I may not be able to act on all feedback, but that does not make it any less valuable. I would also like to solicit all of the members for a favor…whenever coming to the course or on the range, please make a quick stop in the golf shop to check in. With the newness of staff, myself included, we are still working to commit some faces and names to memory. The more frequently we can match the faces and names together, the faster we can get to know you. Knowing our members helps tremendously in provide exceptional service. Weekend Shotguns During the winter months, golf on both Saturday and Sunday are started using 10am shotguns. There’s two reasons for this: 1) with the shorter days of winter, more players can tee off in the “primetime” on Saturday mornings, and 2) the major reason is to efficiently handle frost delays. It is no fun for the golfer or the golf staff to have players with an 8am tee time, then the frost backs that tee time up to 10:30am. The domino effect moves all tee times back, with the noon tee time moving to approximately 2pm if there are some cancellations. That does not give time to finish 18 holes. The 10am shotgun start allows everyone to complete their round. As always, spots in the shotgun are available online at 7am beginning 10 days prior to the date of play.

If you currently have a locker, it would be appreciated if you could let the golf staff know, either in person, by phone (704-394-1011) or by email golfshop@pineislandcc.com. If via email, please include your name and locker number (if known). We also will ensure that you have a nameplate for your locker. Thank you for your assistance! Expecting a new family member? Nothing beats the excitement of welcoming a new baby into your family! Pine Island is so fortunate to have so many couples and families that are adding a new family member. If you are expecting, Pine Island would love to recognize the arrival of the new little one with a small gift – we just need your help! MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS rg Katie Obe & l a e h ic M Michael is originally from Florence, SC and has lived in Charlotte since 2004 and is co-owner at Patterson Heating and Air Conditioning. Katie is originally from Camp Hill, PA and works for Atrium Health as a Nurse Anesthetist. Our daughter Caroline is a 6th grader at Randolph Middle School, and will no doubt make fast friends with the pool bar staff getting snacks next summer. Outside of golf, our hobbies include taking neighborhood walks and long bike rides in nice weather. Katie is looking forward to the pickleball courts completion and also enjoys a game of Mah Jong with friends.

My high school girlfriend, now my wife, Abi, joined me one year later after completing her master’s degree. I work as a Technology Consultant at Ernst and Young, and Abi is a dietitian with Atrium. We love to travel, and the profile picture was taken in Cinque Terre, Italy last October. I started playing golf in April and, although I'm still improving, I love getting out on the course as much as I can! I am hoping Pine Island will be a great place to grow my game.

y Haffner Ray & Jud Ray recently moved to Charlotte from Houston with his wife Judy (non-golfer) to get to a climate that is cooler in the Summer and has something called Seasons. We are also looking to be able to explore the surrounding area and States as we had run out of new places we wanted to visit in Texas. Ray worked in the petroleum industry for Amoco and BP (post merger) spending the last 14 years working on deepwater projects in the Gulf of Mexico (as it was known at the time). Golf is my hobby and improvement is required.

s Sean Shield I grew up in Schenectady, NY. My grandfather had learned to golf from a young age and passed that down to his 3 sons and his grandchildren (me included). I played college soccer but got injured (Achilles) during the process. So, I went all-in on golf after I graduated and have been playing casually since then. Fun Golf Fact - I am a 7 handicap and I have never had a formal lesson. So when I get a lesson.. watch out!! Haha.

Outside of golf, I enjoy following Husker sports, watching basketball, and checking out bars and restaurants. I work as a Fixed Income Manager at Wells Fargo. I joined Pine Island because of the young, laid back vibe, and felt like it’d be a great way to meet people.

liams Robert Wil Rob, a Charleston native and College of Charleston graduate, moved to Charlotte in 2008 and, after a career in transportation, is now a full-time domestic engineer. Ali, originally from Orange County, CA, grew up in Greenville, SC, completed undergraduate and graduate studies at USC, and relocated to Charlotte in 2009. Ali is a CPA and serves as Tax Practice Leader for the Carolinas at BDO. They married in 2012 and have a daughter, Ellison, who is in sixth grade at Mountain Island Charter School. Both are avid golfers, albeit not very good ones and look forward to making Pine Island their home club.

We are expanding our programming, enhancing service standards, and introducing new offerings designed to enrich the overall member experience. Upcoming Programs & Events We are excited to introduce several recurring events throughout the year, including: Flight Club – Held on the second Thursday of each month, offering an enjoyable wine tasting experience for our Members. 1st Friday Live – Live music on the first Friday of every month, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Quarterly Character Brunches – Family-friendly events designed especially for our younger Members. Seasonal & Outdoor Events As temperatures rise, additional programming will be added, including: Bourbon & Cigar Evenings (21+) Corn Hole Tournaments Expanded Poolside Activities and seasonal events Service & Culinary Enhancements In addition to our events, we will be investing in our team through ongoing service training classes to ensure the highest level of hospitality and consistency. We are also excited to introduce seasonal menu changes, highlighting fresh ingredients and thoughtfully curated offerings that evolve throughout the year. Pickleball It’s been an exciting last few weeks of the year down at our future pickleball site. The site grading was completed and the team was able to pour the concrete and install the fencing major progress all around. Next up is applying the final playing surface and striping. To ensure success in the cold winter temps, we need to let the concrete cure for more than a month before moving forward. The official over/under on DraftKings for the opening date is March 15th. If you are like me, you’re betting on the under. Either way, we are all very excited to add Pickleball to Pine Island country Club.
