MEDFORD—Ryan Farrell is off to Carson Wentz Country. Farrell, a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan from Medford Township, landed his dream job last week as a sports anchor and reporter with KFYR, an NBC television station in Bismarck, North Dakota. “At 23 years old, to be a sports anchor and reporter, no matter in what capacity, is a dream come true,” said Farrell, a 2012 graduate of Shawnee High School and 2017 graduate of Rutgers University. “I’ve always envisioned this moment and now that it is here—it’s unreal.”
Bismarck is home to Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Carson Wentz, making it a truly special place for Farrell to get established in the television industry. Farrell said he started to embark on his media career during his freshman year of high school when he elected to take TV Broadcasting Technology courses led by technology teacher Brian Pistone. His coursework emphasized both theory and hands-on experience in video production and provided advanced instruction in electronic

At the end of Farrell’s sophomore year, while most of his classmates were undecided about what career path to choose after high school, he made a commitment to broadcast journalism in a notable way. Farrell, who played basketball and football for the Shawnee Renegades during his freshman and sophomore years, said he gave up his participation in the sports for a chance to be part of the Lenape District Television’s (LDTV) Student Production Crew. The production crew produces programming for the educational access channel of the Lenape Regional High School District (LRHSD).
The channel, available through Comcast and Verizon FiOS, has potential viewership in communities across Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties. “I loved playing sports, but I knew I wasn’t going to go pro,” Farrell said. “I also knew that playing D2 or D3 (college sports) wasn’t going to set me up for a successful career in the long haul. So, I went into the coaches’ office and I told them I was no longer going to play sports. They weren’t happy about it, but you don’t get many opportunities at age 14 to work on a crew for a cable outlet.” One of the main assignments of the
