County Republicans Choose Zeuli to Replace Brown on Ballot

EVESHAM—Steve Zeuli, a lifelong resident of Evesham Township and Cherokee High School graduate, has been selected by the Burlington County Republican Committee to replace Randy Brown, the current mayor of Evesham Township, on the ballot this November. “He absolutely has my full endorsement,” said Brown last weekend of the construction business owner. Brown, a Republican, announced on Sept. 11 that he was withdrawing his name from the ballot due to a few once-in-a-lifetime professional opportunities that he will be presented with in 2019. He added that he did not want to commit to a four-year term, knowing that he would not be able to complete it. Brown, prior to making the announcement, was facing a challenge from Democrat Jaclyn Veasy, another lifelong Evesham resident and senior claims adjuster at GEICO insurance.
Veasy, who received a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from Rutgers University after graduating St. Joan of Arc School and Holy Cross High School, is a 10-year veteran of the insurance industry. She will now faceoff against Zeuli, who is serving his second term on the Evesham Township Council. Zeuli, who double-majored in biology and economics, received a Bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary. In addition to his contruction business, Zeuli serves on the Lenape Regional High School District Long-Range Planning Committee. He also chairs the K.Kiki Konstantinos Scholarship Foundation, which organizes fundraisers to support individual scholarships for outstanding Lenape Regional students entering higher education. “No matter who is on the ballot, voters in Evesham deserve new leadership and a vision based See REPUBLICANS/ Page 10
EVESHAM—Randy Brown, who through a decade of mayoral service has been credited with turning a once stagnant municipality into a destination for families, retirees and businesses, has decided not to seek re-election in November. It was a last-minute change of heart for the Evesham Township Republican, who filed a petition earlier this year with the Burlington County Clerk’s Office to seek his fourth term as mayor and won the GOP primary in June. Brown, a professional football coach, and one of only three men to hold the township’s mayoral post since 1979, announced his decision to leave the mayor’s race on Sept. 11. “I’m not going to give you the line that ‘I need to spend more time with my family,’ because I already do spend plenty of time with my family,” said Brown on the last day where a primary nominee is allowed to withdraw their name from the ballot and still have their party’s county committee pick a replacement. “To be honest, Trisha (his wife), Ryan and Mackenzie (his children) are actually ver y disappointed that my mayoral tenure will come to an end. This is purely a professional business decision.” Brown added that he did not want to commit to another four-year term, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to complete it. “In 2019, I will be presented with a few once-ina-lifetime professional options,” he said. Brown’s decision, however, follows controversy that has made headlines during his third term. In late 2014 and into early 2015, Brown instituted a policy where residents speaking at council meetings had to direct any questions toward the township’s professionals. The policy was adopted after heated exchanges occurred in council’s chambers, particularly between Brown and members of the public. The policy was later reversed following public outcry. About a year later, Brown and Evesham Township School District Superintendent John Scavelli Jr. began See BROWN/ Page 12
