MEDFORD—Country music fans and county residents are in mourning following a deadly helicopter crash at an airport in Medford Township last Friday afternoon. Country music singer Troy Gentry and pilot James Evan Robinson were killed when a utility helicopter they were aboard crashed near a runway at Flying W Airport due to mechanical difficulties in flight. It is believed the two men were engaging in an impromptu sightseeing tour.
According to the Medford Township Police Department, just before 12:40 p.m., the helicopter, which took off from Flying W, was making its return when it began experiencing mechanical problems. Medford Police, Fire, and EMS personnel received a distress call from the Schweitzer 269 and responded. “Initial reports were the helicopter was going to attempt to crash land,” said Lt. Arthur Waterman, a spokesman for the Medford Township Police Department. “Emergency
crews arrived at the airport and shortly thereafter, the helicopter suddenly crashed in a field just south of the airport runway.” It is believed the chopper crashed around 1 p.m. Emergency personnel converged on the crash site, off Fostertown Road, to tend to the two victims. Gentry, 50, was extricated from the helicopter and transported to Virtua Marlton Hospital in Evesham Township. He was later pronounced dead from the injuries he sustained in the crash. Robinson, 30, was pronounced dead at the
scene moments after the crash. He served as a helicopter pilot at Flying W’s flight school, Helicopter Flight Services. The Burlington County Prosecutors Office was asked to assist the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in interviewing witnesses at the scene. An investigation into the exact cause of the crash is being conducted by multiple agencies, including the FAA, NTSB and Medford Township Police Department, and is ongoing.
