FRESH NEW START LITTLE EGG HARBOR—A $53 million renovation project at Pinelands Regional Senior High School and Pinelands Regional Junior High School, which has made much news over the past three years, has largely been completed, with all invasive repair work finished. The schools opened on time Sept. 5 for the 2019-20 school year, with Pinelands Regional School District officials meeting the “aggressive” reopening date set back in the spring of 2018 and reaffirmed over the summer. “I am very happy and content,” said Superintendent Dr. Melissa McCooley. “I had no doubts we would be here, on time, but it was definitely a fight to the finish.” Business Administrator Nick Brown said that almost 5,000-man-hours were accumulated by construction crews in the week leading up to reopening of the schools, so that the buildings would be ready for the students. “We’re very much in the finishing touches,” he said. “We are fine-tuning our HVAC system and going through a punch list of items.”

WASHINGTON—The Washington Township Committee is trying to figure out what to do next after receiving an estimate on Sept. 3 to fix the Washington Township Senior Center, a building leased to the township by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). As previously reported by this newspaper, the senior center had to be closed recently after its chimney foundation tipped, which caused its fireplace to lean out, and then the chimney to break, creating a major structural issue, according to Mayor Dudley Lewis. He said the building was discovered to be in disrepair this past winter after a pipe froze inside of it and caused a flood. “We understand it is going to be sort of a surgical operation, but we came up with an estimate of just over $21,000 for the entire project,” said Township Engineer Kevin Dixon, of the Galloway firm Dixon Associates, at a Sept. 3 township committee meeting. Dixon said the estimate covers “demolition” of the side of the building that has the structural issue. After Lewis asked Dixon if the estimate included possible work to “address sinking property” alongside the building, the engineer replied that he would imagine officials would want to have contingencies built in to the estimate because it was “very early” and a “conceptual” one. “We obviously don’t have a subsurface investigation to go by, but it (the estimate) does address subsidence adjacent to the building, for now, unless something is discovered during the course of the (potential) project,” Dixon said.
