Proposed Redevelopment Plan Would Clear the Way for New, State-of-the-Art Red Lion Diner, May Bring About Shopping Center
A LOCAL WORK OF ART
Preliminary Proposal Would Make Better Use of ‘Oversized,’ 20-Acre Restaurant Parcel, Creating ‘Centerpiece’ of Southampton Twp., Add Route 70 Entrance to Eatery for Safety By Douglas D. M elegari Staff Writer
SOUTHAMPTON—A “brand-new, state-of-the-art” Red Lion Diner is a “very preliminary” possibility that may come to fruition if a proposed redevelopment plan for the “Red Lion Diner Redevelopment Area” is approved by the Southampton Township Committee as early as next month, with the proposed restaurant facility slated to be part of a planned, new shopping center for where the existing diner currently sits at the Red Lion Circle, the latter connecting Routes 70 and 206. The proposed redevelopment plan would also allow for a “much more improved” traffic circle, according to Paul Tsiknakis, co-owner of the Red Lion Diner, in an April 26 interview with this newspaper. Tsiknakis told this newspaper that somewhere between 15 to 20 developers had approached the diner over the last several years with an interest in developing the approximately 20-acre diner property (consisting of three lots combined, with the diner sitting on a lot that is three-acres), which extends from Route 70 to Allentown Road and is not currently being used to its full potential, with plenty of buildable space on what he called an “oversized lot.” But the current developers working with the diner to pursue development at 1753 Route 206, Red Lion Circle Partners,

TABERNACLE—An artist couple from Forked River featured on the Discovery Channel, who hold four Guinness World Records for having built the “World’s Tallest Sandcastle by Hand,” and intend to pursue yet another world record this summer by erecting a some 50-foot-tall sand sculpture by hand in New Egypt, and
who are believed to be among some of the last people in the world to do such work without use of machinery, are wrapping up their latest work of art for all to enjoy at Redmond’s Garden Center in Tabernacle Township – a Tiki Village. The very detailed creation, which greets visitors upon walking inside Redmond’s main greenhouse for its garden center, is 12-foot-high, comprised of 50 tons of
sand, and with there being 2,000 pounds in a ton of sand, according to co-creator and artist Ed Jarrett, 100,000 pounds of sand was used in the finished product. Jarrett, and his co-creator, Bettē Brower, told this newspaper they estimate that at least 100 hours were put into creating the Tiki Village, with the idea for one being See SCULPTURE/ Page 9
