Participants in Veterans Roundtable Launch Offensive to Make Former Freedom Fighters Aware of Benefits By Bill Bonvie Staff Writer
SOUTHAMPTON—Despite a plethora of programs designed to provide medical, financial psychological and moral support to America’s veterans, many thousands reportedly continue to suffer in silence, oblivious to the help that is readily available to them in dealing with problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder and other serious physical and mental illnesses, poverty and homelessness. Finding more effective ways to connect these beleaguered one-time defenders of freedom in the Burlington County area with various forms of assistance was the major objective of a Veterans Roundtable hosted by the Red Lion Diner in Southampton Township on Saturday, Feb. 23.
The event was attended by more than two dozen veterans of different branches of the U.S. Armed Services and their advocates in government and the private sector. “It is ever ybody’s job to get the information out to our brothers and sisters,” noted Bob Looby, past state commander of the American Legion and a representative of the State of New Jersey Veterans Services Council. Looby served as co-moderator for the event along with Rev. Floyd L. White III, pastor of the Woodland Ave. Presbyterian Church in Camden. The event began with a ceremony in which members of area veterans’ groups raised a brand-new American flag on the lawn of the popular eatery. The group
then assembled in a dining room for a complimentary luncheon and discussion of how physically and psychologically wounded warriors, or those who may have fallen on hard times, can be made more aware of the existence of programs specifically intended to make life somewhat easier for them. One particularly pervasive problem— t hat of homelessness a mong a rea veterans —was add ressed by Peter Wine, regional program manager for the Philadelphia-based nonprofit Veterans Multi-Service Center, the motto of which is “Serving those who served.” Wine, whose group works out of the county Human Services facility at 795 See COGNITION/ Page 10
Burlington County Sheriff Jean Stanfield
By Douglas Melegari Staff Writer
MOUNT HOLLY—Burlington County Sheriff Jean Stanfield, after having served six terms in office, says she is planning to relinquish her badge on May 1, although not her belief in the Republican party’s future “on the local level.” “Definitely behind the scenes, I do plan on staying active,” said Stanfield to the Pine Barrens Tribune this past week about her decision to retire. “I want to see the Republican party get strong again. I’ll be out knocking on doors, making phone calls. We are about good government and that is what we have been about for years, and that is what I want to maintain.” But as for leaving her law-enforcement role, she said politics had nothing to do with her decision to resign, which is for “purely personal” reasons based on what was “necessary for me, myself and my family.” “It just seemed to be the right time,” she said. “My family could use my help. We have a lot of little ones.” Stepping into Stanfield’s shoes in that job, at least temporarily, she said, will be Undersheriff Diane Jassmann, who she said started with her as an as intern in the department in 1996 and worked her way up to chief before assuming the duties of undersheriff. St an field said she is con fident that Jassmann is thoroughly familiar with all the responsibilities the job entails and can do it in the same way she has. See RETIRING/ Page 21
