of the church, is doubling down on his decision to discontinue the festival, with a spokesperson for the church, Jessica Garrett, telling this newspaper that “the reasons for discontinuing the festival remain unchanged.”

WATERFORD — Challenges to the legality of an online auction firm’s plan to replace the six-decade-old Atco Dragway with a storage lot for distressed and disabled vehicles took precedence at a twice-delayed but still inconclusive three-and-half-hour continuation of a hearing, conducted June 7 by the Waterford Township Joint Land Use Board, on the company’s site-plan application. Most, but not all of the doubts about the proposal’s conformity to provisions of municipal law were raised in a blistering denunciation delivered by an attorney representing two of its opponents that climaxed the proceedings. The attorney, Richard M. King, Jr. of Somers Point, gave a five-point presentation designed to prove, among other things, that the facility being proposed for the property by Insurance Auto Auctions (IAA), which maintains dozens of similar sites throughout North America, was being misrepresented as a used car establishment when it more closely resembled a junkyard by virtue of the large number of inoperable and partially or totally wrecked vehicles the company routinely keeps at such lots, as depicted in its own photos. In fact, he noted, IAA’s brochure acknowledges it deals in “salvage,” a description that does not meet the township’s conditional use criteria for a Planned Light Industrial District. “We submit that an auction of salvage See DRAGWAY/ Page 10
