EVESHAM— Given that just hours before Evesham Township’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration was set to begin a gunman killed seven people and injured nearly two dozen more in Highland Park, Illinois during a Fourth of July parade, a massacre that has horrified the nation, and that gun violence is fresh on the minds of many Americans following numerous other recent mass shootings in the U.S., the Evesham Township Police Department was already on a heightened state of alert for the local event.

T he sit u at iona l awa re ne s s a nd preparedness of the Evesham Township Police, along with the actions of an alert citizen, reportedly resulted in a man with a loaded airsoft revolver-style handgun being quickly removed from the local celebration’s grounds on the evening of July 4 before any incident could possibly come about.

The following day, Evesham Police, in a statement released on its social media pages, said that authorities had no reason to believe the man found in possession of the handgun, identified as Blaine McCammack, 29, of Wailuku, Hawaii, “intended to carry out an assault on patrons” of the Evesham event.

EVESHAM—An ordinance providing for a $5 million capital improvement budget covering long-term expenditures with an estimated average life span of just over 16 years and authorizing a $475,000 bond issue to finance it was unanimously adopted by the Evesham Township Council at a meeting on June 22, along with another ordinance appropriating $1,485,000 for improvements to the township-owned Indian Spring Country Club golf course and providing for the issuance of $985,000 in golf course utility bonds.

Just prior to the passage of the two funding measures, Auditor Robert P. Nehila, Jr., of Bowman & Co. LLP, came forward to announce that he had conducted a thorough audit of the township’s finances, the results of which were completely “clean” with “no findings in need of corrective action.”

Also accentuating the positive tone of the session was the awarding of an inaugural scholarship by the township Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) to a recent Cherokee High School graduate who is currently leading a mini-sustainable agriculture demonstration project in the community garden behind the Blue Barn athletic facility, and the Evesham Police Department’s introduction of a more user-friendly, compartmentalized and comprehensive online annual report designed to reflect both the professionalism and transparency of the department’s operations.

The capital budget, as explained by Deputy Mayor Heather Cooper, is intended to “spread across time” the cost of the township’s largest assets, acquisitions and facilities improvements, the idea being “that you don’t burden the taxpayer today for what the taxpayer of tomorrow will use.”

Examples of what will be included in the category of capital budget expenditures, she said, are new police vehicle purchases, updated IT network software and hardware, and another rear-loading trash truck the township plans to buy.

The purposes for which the bonds (or notes) will be issued, as spelled out in the ordinance, will include an estimated $1,250,000 worth of vehicles and equipment for various township departments; road and street improvements expected to

The authorized bond issues, however, amounted to a total of $250,000 less than the $5 million called for in the capital budget, due to that money already having been made available “by virtue of provision for down payment or for capital improvement purposes in one or more previously adopted budgets.”

The golf course upgrades, as outlined in the second ordinance, will include improvements to the driving range/pro shop; the acquisition and installation of “selfcomposting bathrooms;” the reconstruction of various tee areas; the acquisition of fans for surface aeration of greens and acquisition and the installation of a fountain to improve water circulation.

The ordinance also notes that “(t)he obligations authorized herein are to be issued for a purpose that is deemed to be self-liquidating.”

Elaborating on that, Mayor Jaclyn “Jackie” Veasy maintained that “the golf course is in a much better financial place than it has been in a very long time” and is thus now able “to put that money aside and be self-sustaining for the improvements.”

The mayor also noted that the bond issue actually would come to about $500,000 less than the total amount authorized for the improvements “because we have previous money that has already been set aside,” and thanked Head Golf Professional Curtis Kirkpatrick for the work he has done to help get it to that point.

Fire Chief Says ‘Minor Fire’ on Fourth of July at Browns Mills Acme Started in Compressor; Store Has Since Reopened to Its Customers Area Social Media Sites Were Abuzz Following Incident That Had Briefly Closed Pemberton’s Lone Supermarket and Required Health Department Notification

PEMBERTON—A “minor fire” on the evening of July 4 resulted in the evacuation and temporary closure of the Acme store in the Browns Mills section of Pemberton Township, though the store was reportedly already closed to customers for the day due to the holiday.

Firefighters, according to Pemberton Township Fire Chief Craig Augustoni, were dispatched to the supermarket around 7 p.m. after employees of the store observed “a little fire” and “a little bit of smoke” coming from a compressor.

The fire, he said, was “contained to one of those refrigerator aisles, in front of the deli.”

While Augustoni noted “it really wasn’t a big event,” social media was abuzz that the town’s only supermarket was temporarily closed because of a fire, comments that began following a Nixel emergency notification that, “Due to a minor fire, Acme is closed until further notice.” A subsequent social media post from the fire department with the notification was shared some 100 times.

But the “biggest thing that happened,” as the fire chief put it, is that the store was closed temporarily not because of the severity of the fire, but because of “protocol” that the

Department of Health’s Food Division be notified anytime “you have anything like that in the area of food,” which can trigger the need for a re-inspection of a store that sells food.

“Anytime we have a fire in a store with smoke, we always notify the Department of Health’s Food Division,” he said.

And given the store had already been closed to customers two hours prior to the blaze starting because of it being Independence Day, according to Augustoni, “we just shut the store down, and by the time on they cleaned everything up, theyfollow were us (due to be) closed anyways.”facebook.com/MedfordUMC Those inside the store when the blaze began, evacuated, according to the fire chief, and “did everything they had to do.” A fire extinguisher was used in the incident, he added, which put out a dry powder on the flames.

The fire chief confirmed that the store had since reopened, with a store employee telling this newspaper that the store reopened for business on the morning of July 5.

“We conducted some research and found that it’s pretty difficult for people to solve a problem that they don’t know actually exists,” Passanante maintained.

By the same token, he contended, many don’t know it’s possible to obtain “a very high yield of vegetables and crops” by observing environmental safety measures.

Creating such awareness, he said, is the focus of his group’s current project.

Cooper, the township’s liaison to the YAC, praised Passanante, who plans to study biology at St. Joseph’s University in the fall, as a “true community servant,” adding, “we’re a better town because of kids like Nick who are going off to be leaders in the world.”

Veasy, in a separate statement, told Passanante and his fellow YAC members that she hoped they would one day return to Evesham, run for office and “be community leaders as well, because we would love to have you.”

Police Chief Walt Miller described the Evesham Police Department’s newly designed annual report as one that local residents can use a touchscreen to scroll over by simply clicking on the department website, or else use a mouse to access it, as opposed to its previous PDF format.

The 2021 report, he said, covers two areas of values, the first being professionalism, reflecting the organization and efficiency with which the department conducts its various functions, and the second being transparency, or “showing the community what it is we do, how we’re doing it, and in some cases who is actually doing it.”

the State of New Jersey, Miller, emphasized, comes with being required to follow the “best practices” of the policing profession, which means being evaluated every four years by assessors who look at every aspect of the department’s operation and make recommendations. That, he said, includes the preparedness of its members to handle “stressful situations—especially high-risk, low-frequency events.”

One such potential situation, the chief later noted in his regular report to the council, was addressed in a recently conducted full-scale active shooter drill at Sovereign Grace Church, which, he said, “will not be the last one we do.”

Not only did the drill test the capacity of the officers and their equipment to respond to such a crisis and how well the police interacted with members of the fire department, he said, but the second part was to bring in members of the school staff and religious leaders to give them a chance to see “the way we would respond to an active shooter situation and then we can engage them in conversation.”

In mentioning how the police department is also attempting to respond to traffic complaints from residents, Miller took the opportunity to warn them not to confront people directly, but rather to call the police.

“Give us the license plate number,” he said, reminding them that there is a process.

“A citizen can sign a complaint for a traffic violation, and we can lead you through that process, which is safer and more effective and also we can direct patrols out there,” he added.

But confronting people, he cautioned, “can cause issues, including injury and worse.”

Miller also told the council that a recruitment plan is now in place to deal with a large number of retirements that recently occurred, with an eye toward diversification to better reflect the makeup of the community itself.

And both residents and local officials breathed a huge sigh of relief on July 5 over what could have been a very different outcome the day before, with not only the Highland Park Massacre weighing heavily on their minds, but also the news that two police officers were wounded in nearby Philadelphia after being grazed by bullets while patrolling the Ben Franklin Parkway during the city’s Fourth of July celebration known as the Wawa Welcome America Party.

The latter shooting, which had dominated local news broadcasts, prompted the unusual interruption of local programming in primetime on Philadelphia television stations and resulted in special news bulletins airing late into the night, sent spectators on the Parkway scrambling in a scene that was later described as a “stampede” of sorts on one local news broadcast.

As of press time, city authorities were pleading for attendees to come forward with any video that they took of the festivities around the time the fireworks began, which is when the cops were shot, as well as sought tips, uncertain of how the gunfire erupted or who was responsible, only somewhat confident that the weapon involved was fired a long distance away from the base of the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where the officers were reportedly shot.

In Evesham, it was around 7:12 p.m. on July 4 when officers assigned to the local celebration at Savich Field, 525 East Main Street, were “advised by an alert citizen about an intoxicated male who possibly had a firearm.”

“Officers immediately converged on the male, identified as Blaine McCammack,” it was further noted in the statement from Evesham Police. “McCammack began acting disorderly and was immediately taken into custody.”

A s e arch pu r por t e d ly re su lt e d i n McCammack being found in possession of an airsoft revolver style handgun that was “loaded with rubber bullets.” McCammack was also found in possession of pepper

spray that was “over the weight threshold permitted to be carried in New Jersey,” along with a butterfly knife and handcuffs.

McCammack was subsequently transported to Evesham Police Headquarters, where he was “interviewed” by members of the Evesham Police Investigative Bureau, according to the statement from Evesham police.

“At this time, there is no reason to believe that McCammack intended to carry out an assault on patrons of the July 4th celebration events,” the local police agency said.

“McCammack was charged accordingly and lodged in the Burlington County Jail.”

The statement noted that Evesham Police are “incredibly grateful” for the “alert citizen who immediately reported this incident to nearby officers,” and encouraged “all citizens” to follow a “motto” that became more prevalent through a national campaign following the September 11th terror attacks, “‘If you see something, say something.’”

McCammack was charged with fourthdegree unlawful possession of a weapon, third-degree false public alarm, as well as disorderly persons offenses of prohibited weapons and devices, possession of a self-

defense chemical and disorderly conduct.

“Last night, we had a wonderful time celebrating as a community,” said Mayor Jacklyn “Jackie” Veasy in statement issued by her office. “We also have the realization that we always need to be aware of our surroundings, even when we feel safe.

“I would like to take a moment to commend the resident who alerted the Evesham Township Police of suspicious behavior by a crowd member at last night’s fireworks. I also would like to commend the Evesham PD for their swift action and taking the concerns of the citizen seriously and investigating the situation. We are all truly appreciative for the work the Evesham PD does to keep our community safe.”

She noted that the local incident is “just a reminder” that “we all need to work together to keep our community safe for everyone.”

“If you ever think you see suspicious activity at a large community event or even in your daily life, please always remember the familiar slogan, ‘If You See Something, Say Something,’” the mayor reiterated.

“And then let the Evesham PD do their job to protect us.”

While Camillo’s sister, Debra Lang, also a resident of River Road in Lower Bank, described on both June 14 and July 5 that the speeding is occurring “all the time” on River Road, Camillo told Trooper Mark Gonzalez attending the June 14 Washington committee meeting that speeding is particularly prevalent in the area after 11 a.m. on weekends.

And it is not just that “numerous” vehicles are speeding, according to Lang,

but several are also passing on solid, double-yellow-lines.

“I can’t say it’s a specific time of the day, 5 a.m. or 9 p.m.,” Lang contended. “I can’t even say it’s at rush hour or when people are leaving for work. It is all the time.”

Despite a curve in the road near Old Church Road, and a blind curve in the road around Charles Avenue, in addition to the no passing zone, Lang noted “motorcycles

are passing” other vehicles in that area “all the time.”

“I keep saying, ‘It’s just a matter of time,” declared Camillo on June 14.

The speeding, other residents reported, was also occurring on River Road in the Green Bank section of Washington, as well as on County Route 542.

ABOUT THE FAIR AND ITS ORGANIZATION

The Burlington County Farm Fair, Inc. is a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote agriculture, social life, and youth as well as educating the general public by conducting a yearly agr icultural fair with exhibits, livestock, and farm products. Located on the beautiful Burlington County Fairgrounds in Springfield Township, the fair offers a variety of activities to the tens of thousands of visitors that attend each year.

Horses, cows, rabbits, chickens, sheep, goats and other animals are on display each day. Most of these are shown by 4-H members, each of whom hopes to win a blue ribbon.

On Saturday, farmers and state FFA members compete in dairy cow shows from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the South Show Tent. Visitors can also watch dairy cows being milked twice daily in the milking tent. Don’t miss it!!

Daily horse shows, open to the public, are also a major attraction.

Old steam engines and antique farm equipment will bring back memories for many.

A very popular attraction is the tractor pull conducted in a dedicated arena.

The Farmer for a Day Tent, sponsored by the Women’s Committee of the Burlington County Board of Agriculture, offers each child who visits the fair a chance to be a “Farmer for a Day.” There are many more things to see and do at the Burlington County Farm Fair! Come on down and have some fun!

The Burlington County Farm Fair Association and Majestic Midways of York, Pennsylvania have a great bargain for families!

Wristband Special - Every Day of the Fair!

Wristbands may not be used for multiple days.

A new wristband must be purchased for each day of the fair.

A reusable plastic card or the Magic Money phone app can be used to purchase Midway ride tickets and buy from Midway concessions only at this time. A multi-day parking pass for a $25 donation is available from any of the parking lot attendants.

If you have a U.S. Military ID (active or retired), show your ID to the parking attendant and get 50 percent off the parking donation as our thankyou to our military fairgoers! Load up the car and come on down!

A remote parking area is located within the Columbus Farmer’s Market parking lot. FREE shuttles will be offered to the main entrance of the fairgrounds. Continuous FREE shuttles will be offered all day, with no waiting and very little walking!

A special, dedicated motorcycle parking area is in close proximity to all the action. No shuttle is necessary. All bike clubs are welcome! NO COLORS, PLEASE. See parking lot attendants for motorcycle parking area.

Handicapped parking is located in the main parking lot.

CHILDREN’S DAY

Children’s Day is on Thursday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when Midway Rides will be closed.

Animal tents will be open with 4-H and private owners on hand to show their animals.

A Dining Pavilion is available to visitors who bring their own lunches or buy fair food. Visitors may buy food from any open food vendor.

A “Farmer for a Day” tent will be open with goodies for the children.

THE MAN OF OVER 100 VOICES

Scott Gager, a singing voice impersonator who amazes audiences wherever he performs with his unique ability to change voices in the same song, from word to word, will be performing in the North Show Tent on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Gager, who has performed in Nashville, Tennessee; Branson, Missouri and towns throughout South Jersey, can impersonate over 100 voices. Currently, he is the #1 followed act on Facebook in New Jersey with over 24,000 followers.

In July 2017, Gager even performed at the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. Gager discovered that he could impersonate virtually anyone, in all genres of music, six years ago when he began to work on his vocals. In March of 2012, he began performing weekly at a local bar. From August to October of that same year, he was hired as the featured singer at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City.

On election night of 2012, Gager wrote a song called “Red and Blue,” which is about how divided the United States has become. He and his wife, Debbie, finished the song just before their son deployed to Afghanistan. The song was produced in a local studio by other fair-favorite Paul Presto and has been played on the radio.

Scott and Debbie Gager, along with Presto, recently also wrote a song called “Alone” about their personal experience with a veteran suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The song is said to be resonating with people all over the country.

“Singing to someone and seeing their face light up when they really get your message is one of the greatest feelings an entertainer can get,” says Paul Presto, Jr. Presto has been playing music since the age of 8. By 14, he was playing in nightclubs all over South Jersey with his father Paul Presto, Sr. He was the band leader for the Black-Tie Orchestra, a prominent Philadelphia area society band for over 20 years. Under the alias of Paul Street, he wrote and produced two country albums, “Streetwise” and “Temporary Sanity.” A song from the second album called “My Daddy Does” is a duet with his daughter Emma that tells all

about how the music has been a part of the family for years.

“Having my daughter sing a duet with me on the CD is one of the proudest moments of my life,” he said. “Now I know how my Dad must have felt the first time I came on stage with him to perform.”

Emma Presto is now a full-time band member with Paul and Paul Presto Sr., also under the Street alias. They play for private events, fairs, weddings, birthday parties—anywhere that people gather to have a great time.

The Streets will be performing in the North Show Tent on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at 7:30 p.m.

BULLZEYE BAND

Chatsworth’s own singer, song writer and guitar player Tom Baz, and the renowned Bullzeye Band, will offer “rockin’ country music” in the North Show Tent on Friday, July 22, 2022, at 7:30 p.m.

Baz was born in 1973, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Chatsworth. The son of a U.S. airman and seasoned New York bull rider, Baz was exposed to a diverse music collection at an early age.

Artists like Elvis Presley, Jim Croce, the Rolling Stones, Don Williams, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams Sr. and Jr., Lynyrd Skynyrd, George Strait and Keith Whitley were staples in the Baz home.

Baz attributes his diverse taste in music to his entire family, but mostly to his father’s musical tastes and older brother, who is also a musician and artist. The musical influences do not stop with country though, as Baz’s unique sound also

comes from listening to rock bands such as Rush, the Stray Cats, Southern Culture on The Skids and Van Halen.

When he is not with his band, Baz performs in acoustic shows—solo—or with percussionist Johnny “Sticks” Anderson.

CHILDREN’S DECORATED WAGON CONTEST The Children’s Decorated Wagon Contest will take place on Friday, July 22, 2022, at 6 p.m. in the South Show Tent.

Registration is at 5:30 p.m. the same day. Children 10 and under, as well as families, may participate by decorating a wagon or stroller. Entries in the individual and group categories will be judged on neatness, originality and theme.

Entries are encouraged to use this year’s Farm Fair theme – “The Family Fun Fair” - or go with your own. Be creative and have fun!

DRAFT HORSE PULL If you enjoy Tractor Pulls, you’ll love watching the horses perform. Come out on Wednesday, July 20, 2022. The weigh-in starts at 3 p.m. and the pull starts at 6 p.m. The horses will pull at the same location as the tractors, next to Jacksonville-Jobstown Road, just west of the Farm Fair main entrance.

• All horses must have proof of a negative Coggins test dated within one year.

• Animals originating from outside of New Jersey must be accompanied by a health certificate (CVI) completed by a veterinarian within 30 days of the event. Burlington County Farm Fair must be listed as the destination on the health certificate.

ANTIQUE MACHINERY Farm Fair visitors can take a step back in time by viewing the antique tractors and other vintage farm equipment, cars and trucks at the Antique Farm Equipment Show, coordinated by Larry Cauffman, of Masonville, and his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Jeff Entwhistle, of Mount Laurel.

The tractors and antique equipment will also be on parade in the fairgrounds every day at 5 p.m.

Cauffman coordinates the old farm gasoline engine section of the show. The putt-putt-sputterputt of his machines serves as a calling for old engine buffs and attracts thousands of people to the exhibit. He will also be shelling field corn throughout the fair with a two-hole corn sheller, a slow process compared with our modern combines. Spectators may get a souvenir corncob!

BUILD A RECYCLED SCARECROW CONTEST RULES

Celebrate Burlington County Farm Fair’s 75th Anniversary Build A Recycled Scarecrow Contest!

Entries will be accepted on Monday, July 18, 2022, from 10 a.m.-8 p.m.

RULES

• Scarecrow may be an individual, group, club or family project.

• Scarecrow must be 4 to 6 feet in height.

• Scarecrow must be constructed from recyclable or reused items/materials. Tape, wire, string, etc. can be used for assembling.

• Scarecrow must be free standing, propped up, or hanging for display during the entire five days of the Farm Fair.

• Scarecrow must have the name(s) of participating individual(s) or group plainly displayed for the judges.

Judges will consider age of participants, originality and creativity in the use of recyclable items, neatness, eye appeal and durability. The decision of the judges is final.

Interested participants must fill out an Entry Form.

SUGGESTIONS FOR CONTESTANTS

• Wear an appropriate summer dress, along with suitable jewelry.

• Makeup may be applied a little heavier than normal, and hair may be best worn in an “updo,” since it can be very hot under stage lights.

• Wedged heels work best at the fairgrounds and on stage.

• Try to smile and have fun, even if you are nervous.

• Remember to stand up straight to show good posture and poise.

• When answering questions from the master of ceremonies, take a second to think about your answer, then answer slowly and clearly. This will be your time to show your public speaking ability, personality and intelligence to the judges.

• Your talents and hobbies are just as important as your overall physical appearance. The question segment is your opportunity for you to shine for the judges, while politely bragging about your accomplishments!

• Even if you’re nervous, try to smile and have fun!

BURLINGTON COUNTY FARM FAIR • MAJOR EVENTS

OPEN DAIRY COW SHOW

The Open Dairy Cow Show will take place on Saturday, July 23, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Host/show chairperson is Trista Bond.

Interested individuals must fill out an entry form.

RULES

• The Burlington County Open Dairy Show is open to all YOUTHS 25 years of age and under as of Jan. 1.

• There are no requirements to be a member of any organization to participate.

• Overnight herdsmen are available.

No one under the age of 15 will be permitted to stay overnight. All minors must be chaperoned by one adult. This can be worked out as a group.

• Animal must be a dairy cow breed purebred. May be grade identified or registered purebred.

• All health requirements must be met and in compliance with the New Jersey Division of Animal Health recommendations for New Jersey Fairs, Shows and Sales. All animals must be free from any infectious or contagious disease.

• A valid Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI), signed by an accredited New Jersey Veterinarian, must accompany all native New Jersey Animals. The CVI must indicate that all animals of the species to be exhibited on the exhibitor’s premises have been observed by a veterinarian and found to be free of any signs of infectious or contagious diseases. The official New Jersey Certificate of Veterinarian Inspection is valid for 30 days in New Jersey.

• Out-of-state cattle: Cattle originating from other states must be accompanied by an official interstate Certificate of Veterinary Inspection in compliance with New Jersey’s import regulations.

• All domestic animals requiring CVI for exhibition must be individually identified by one of the acceptable methods, and it must be listed on the health certificate. If any other identification is present, it must be listed on the health certificate. The CVI will be checked by the veterinarian on call at the Farm Fair prior to unloading.

• All animals should be current on rabies vaccination, and proof of vaccination by a veterinarian must be provided.

• Each animal must be a member of a tuberculosis and brucellosis free herd.

• It is recommended that all entries be inoculated against BVD, IBR, PI3, and Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus. Consult your veterinarian.

• In the event that an entry comes down with an illness while on the grounds, the on-premise veterinarian will evaluate the condition of the animal. If the veterinarian determines the animal is unfit to remain, the animal will need to be removed from the grounds.

• Ribbons will be awarded to all placings.

• Trophies and rosettes will be awarded to Junior Champion, Senior Champion, and Grand Champion of all breeds.

• Showmanship is open to all exhibitors. To qualify, the exhibitor must show an animal in a type or confirmation class previously in the day.

• Showmanship classes will be separated according to age. Proof of age may be required; driver’s license or copy of a birth certificate.

• Youth exhibitors will have an opportunity to participate in a daily milking contest at the fair.

12. The many tents throughout the fairgrounds have great shade to work under and are happy to have you there, but please ask before you set up as some areas (cows, horses, etc.) may have safety restrictions.

The artist shall be solely responsible for and shall keep, save and hold harmless the Burlington County Farm Fair and the Willingboro Art Alliance and its servants, employees and agents from and against any and all claims, demands, suits, actions, recoveries, judgments, costs and expenses in connection therewith on account of personal injury, loss of life, and damage and loss of real and personal property of any person, agency, corporation or government entity arising out of or in consequence of any acts or omissions of artist, his employees, agents and sub-vendors, in connection with artist participation in the Burlington County Farm Fair Plein Painting Competition. BURLINGTON COUNTY FARM FAIR SCHEDULE • TUESDAY, JULY 19 OPENING CEREMONIES

The Burlington County Farm Fair celebrates our 75th anniversary!

In keeping with our annual tradition, the Farm Fair’s opening ceremony will take place in the fair’s North Tent at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a performance and singing of the National Anthem by area entertainer Scott Gager.

Visitors will also be greeted by representatives of various fair events, and groups such as the Boy Scouts of America, Burlington County Chapter, the Future Farmers of America and the Burlington County 4-H Program.

Officers and trustees will then assemble for the Pledge of Allegiance and Springfield Mayor Denis McDaniel, the fair’s official host, will join other local government leaders to give visitors a “country welcome.”

On opening night, for the first time at the fairgrounds, the farm fair will have a firework show by Pyrotecnico. The fireworks show begins at 9:45 p.m., weather permitting. (RAIN DATE – 9:45 p.m.

BURLINGTON COUNTY FARM FAIR SCHEDULE • WEDNESDAY, JULY 20 FARM FAIR QUEEN CONTEST The longest running farm fair event since the fair’s inception in 1947, and one of its most anticipated, is the Farm Fair Queen Contest.

This event held on the second night of the fair (Wednesday), traditionally draws young women who have an interest in the preservation of agriculture in Burlington County.

The queen-elect must be entering either her junior or senior year in high school or its equivalent in a home-school program. Contestants are judged on poise, stage presence and the ability to express themselves verbally, based on their answers to an essay question which is judged at a time other than the evening of the contest.

The queen’s duties are to serve as the official hostess of the fair and to visit all parts of it during the week.

Anthony’s Jewelers of Palmyra has been a long-time supporter of the contest and provides not only the crown, but gifts for the queen and her court. The trustees serve as the queen’s official drivers in various county parades during the year. Emcee Paul Pestritto has been running the contest and announcing the queen since 1996.

In addition, the queen is eligible to compete in the State Agricultural Contest in which the winner represents the state at all county farm fair events. The outgoing queen returns each year to crown her successor. Each queen is expected to complete a “give back” project for the fair. This can be in the form of visiting schools to promote the fair in the spring, or a project that the queen comes up with and runs by the contest director, Jamie Padulese, who is a former queen herself.

For county 4-H members, exhibiting at the Farm Fair is a required activity—and an especially exciting one for the Cloggers, a 4-H dance troupe with about 40 members ranging in age from 5 to 18.

Since clogging has its roots in Appalachia, country music is the group’s prevalent genre, but they include some pop music routines in their repertoire, as well.

Members of the New Jersey Future Farmers of America Association (FAA) will come from all over the state with their dairy cows to compete with each other on how they show their cows in an “open exhibition” setting. This competition will be held in the South Show Tent.

FAA is a national educational organization, some 650,000 members strong, preparing young people for leadership and careers in agriculture. As one of the three integral components of Agricultural Education, FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success. In New Jersey, more than 2,250 members engage in personal, career and leadership development activities that challenge them to excel as they develop agricultural skills and competencies for the future.

Gonzalez, in response to that woman’s claim, asserted that he “knows what you mean” because he had just “pulled someone over going 77” mph in that location. He also acknowledged that there had been a recent fatal crash in Washington (there have actually been two fatal crashes in town as of press time, both of which occurred in late April and on County Route 542).

The State Trooper promised the concerned parties on June 14 that he would leave a note for the station commander of the State Police Tuckerton station (the one responsible for police patrols in Washington) to “make sure we are going further down on Route 542” and pass along the message “to make sure we get more people out there.”

Gonzalez urged residents in the meantime to “don’t hesitate to call us” to report speeding or other motor vehicle infractions.

Gadd, at the time of the June 14 Washington committee meeting, reported his observation that he saw the state police patrolling Route 542 and has “seen them in Lower Bank, but not Green Bank yet.”

But during the July 5 committee session, Gadd reported that during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, “I did not see the State Police in our township” despite him being “here all weekend.”

“I am not saying they weren’t here,” he added. “I am saying I didn’t see them.”

Camillo, who during the previous meeting thanked the state police for its increased patrols, also contended on July 5, “I have not seen any state police at all in the last month on River Road in Lower Bank.”

She indicated that she was particularly disappointed because she had been told after the June 14 meeting that the state police would be “out there” the following week, “guaranteed.”

“I am just saying what I observed,” she declared.

Camillo then made what she referred to as “one, simple comment” that she has “been coming now for over a year to the meetings, and that every meeting I bring up about the speeding, and I am just really disappointed that a year later we have not made a whole lot of progress – that there is not better progress on speeding throughout Lower Bank.”

That comment spurred locals to offer a mixture of opinions about the recent state police presence, including from resident Barbara Cavileer, also chief of the Green Bank Volunteer Ambulance Company.

“I have to disagree,” declared Cavileer in response to Camillo. “I think we have made improvements. You’ve upped the awareness dramatically. We have had troopers at our meetings, which we have never had before – at least for a very long period of time.

“There has been a presence of state troopers, and during this particular weekend, they were with us responding to 911 calls.”

Cavileer noted that during the Fourth of July weekend, State Troopers were “with us for the fire calls” as well as responded to a person who was found dead in town, the latter incident which reportedly necessitated that they stick around “for hours.”

because they are involved with life and death situations,” Cavileer quipped. “So, just because you are not seeing them, does not mean they aren’t present.”

It was just a few months ago that Mayor Daniel James, in response to numerous complaints about what had been purportedly rambunctious activity on the Mullica River, declared that it was only a matter of time before a tragedy happens there.

Joyce Deily, following Camillo’s remark, expressed that she was “very happy” to see the State Police’s Marine Unit patrolling the Mullica during the holiday weekend, even though the patrols she observed were a “little bit more low key” than what she had observed during previous weekends.

“While I haven’t had any personal damage (from those disobeying the no-wake zone), I do appreciate that the jet skiers seem to (now) obey the ‘no wake’ signs a little bit more,” observed Deily of the state police presence on the river. “There is always going to be some rowdy people, but for the most part, it was a calmer weekend for the Fourth of July.”

Committeeman Paul Seybold noted on June 14 that the state police recently sought the assistance of the township Public Works Department to reinstall a no wake sign by Crowley’s Landing.

Also during the June 14 governing body meeting, Gadd noted that he had been in communication with the Atlantic City station for the State Police Marine Unit, and at that time, was told by a sergeant that while statistics on issued summonses couldn’t be provided, “light to moderate” traffic had been observed on the Mullica by State Troopers.

He added that “regular patrols” had been scheduled until at least the beginning of July.

The public safety director also reported that he and the local emergency management coordinator met with the State Park Police about increasing patrols, and that the agency acknowledged it was short-staffed, but was attempting to pull in resources from other areas of the state.

Gadd noted at the time that he hasn’t “heard of any new complaints” since those made about the Mullica from the 2021 season.

session, observed that both boat and vehicle traffic in town was, so far, lighter this summer than compared with the last one, believing that one possible reason for that is the much higher gasoline prices.

As for her July 5 comment expressing disappointment about what she feels is a lack of progress, Camillo, in a rebuttal to Cavileer, said she “knows the police are busy” and “they don’t have enough manpower,” but believes they could at least “ride” down some of the roads in town “to make a presence,” believing it would “help” serve as a deterrent.

“It isn’t that I am saying, ‘They don’t do anything,’” Camillo clarified. “I am saying, ‘I didn’t see them.’”

Gadd advised that the digital speed signs are currently posted in Green Bank after being “up for three weeks” in Lower Bank.

He described that he would try to alternate them between the two main sections of town.

As for the 2000 block of River Road in Lower Bank where Lang “begged” on July 5 for them to be put due to the speeding and illegal passing, Gadd responded that he will “make note of that when I move them sometime next week.

The public safety director, who is a former police detective, also recently reminded residents of a “separate study” that is being conducted by the township engineer in hopes of convincing the county to lower the speed limit on River Road in Lower Bank to 25 mph, believing the area qualifies for a residential area designation, which would permit such a posted speed limit.

“Hopefully, we will be able to convince the county to lower the speed limit,” Gadd said. “That is the goal.”
