JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST—U.S. Air Force Col. Neil R. Richardson has relinquished command of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JBMDL), and the 87th Air Base Wing, to Col. Bridget V. Gigliotti. The change in command came during a July 26 change of command ceremony held on JBMDL. “Thank you all for being here today to celebrate this very special day for Bridget and her family,” said the ceremony’s presiding officer, U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. John Gordy, also the U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center commander at the joint base. “Thank you to everyone for spending their valuable time here as we say goodbye to an incredible leader and welcome an equally incredible new one.” Gordy added that both the outgoing leader, and incoming leader, of the joint base have demonstrated an “exceptional ability to lead and inspire.” “Both have shown that they are committed to building an environment of trust and respect,” he said. “Both have also demonstrated they can be trusted with Air Force’s most important asset and weapon—our Airmen and their families.” Before Richardson relinquished command, he was awarded a Legion of Merit and rendered a final salute to the men and women of the joint base. “Today, marks the fifth change of command for the 87th Air Base Wing and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to command the wing and lead such a talented and hard-working group of military and civilian professionals,” Richardson said. JO I N T BA SE M C GU I R E - DI XLAKEHURST—Even the simplest of military flight operations requires professionally trained aircrew members to follow precise procedures. During training, aircrew members are given checklists to follow step-by-step, which contains information to conduct a successful and safe flight. For U.S. Air Force Col. Neil R. Richardson, who relinquished his responsibilities as commander of Joint Base McGuire-DixLakehurst (JBMDL) and the 87th Air Base Wing, this was his life. Richardson started his Air Force career in 1995 as a C-130 Hercules navigator. The job process was straight forward and clear, there was no gray-area in the process. As Richardson advanced in his career, he moved up the ladder of leadership roles throughout multiple Air Force entities— s q u a d r o n c o m m a n d e r, g r o u p d e p ut y commander, wing vice commander, etc., before fina lly la nding the insta llation commander position at JBMDL in 2017. “It was cer tainly going to be a new challenge,” Richa rdson said. “I wasn’t really sure what to think of the joint base commander dual hatting piece, so it took me quite a while to fully grasp what that meant; the authority and the responsibilities of the job itself.” See LEADERSHIP/ Page 21
