Planning Board Gives Preliminary and Final Approval to Seldat to Erect Three-Story, 509,038 Square Foot Distribution Center at Intersection of Birmingham and South Pemberton Roads By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

BI R M I NGH A M—As Pember ton Township Councilman and Planning Board member Donovan Gardner put it, there is a lot going on these days at (and in the vicinity of) the intersection of Birmingham and South Pemberton roads. With a widening and improvement project well underway on South Pemberton Road, also known as County Route 530, that will eventually see a traffic signal

installed at the intersection, and an adjacent neighborhood up in arms over an addiction treatment center, Solstice Counseling and Wellness Center, that recently opened at 300 Birmingham Road, Seldat Distribution, Inc. has now received preliminary and final municipal approval to erect a 509,038 square foot warehouse on an approximately 30-acre lot that sits on the northwestern corner of the intersection. The proposed warehouse, which will abut Southampton Township, will allow

the company to “downsize” from a million square-foot building it leases in Burlington Township and “relocate” its existing operation to the Birmingham section of Pemberton Township. Headquartered in New Jersey, Seldat employs more than 2,200 professionals across North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and the AsiaPacific, according to its website. WOODLAND—A resident of Woodland Township who purportedly had a contractor clear cut a section of woods designated as a township paper street (a road that appears on maps, but has never been built) has received a stop work order from the municipal code enforcement officer at the direction of the Pinelands Commission. The Woodland Township Committee, claiming to be following the advice of Pinelands Commission staff on how to rectify the issue, unanimously authorized the resident, Stanley Worrell, to file a retroactive application for the project with the commission, on behalf of the township. Worrell contended during a July 24 township committee workshop meeting that even though the pathway he created in the woods, which runs from Savoy Boulevard to Prince Street, follows the township’s 13th paper street, he cleared a 55-foot-wide firebreak, with “firebreak” being the operative word. While the township committee has expressed that they are in favor of a firebreak due to residents in the area really not having an escape route if a wildfire occurs, Deputy Mayor Mark Herndon has said on the record that he recalled a time when Worrell approached the Woodland Township Land Use Board wishing to clear 13th Street. “Years ago, he came to the land use board and said he wanted to clear a street, 13th See HALT/ Page 21
