treat for free,” Kazansky said.

Eugene and Anna’s impression of the country since arriving in Medford has also been extremely positive, he noted, adding that their immediate agenda includes becoming proficient in English and finding employment, which they will be permitted to have, but be offered no public assistance.

For Eugene to work in his field of videography, their host added, he will need to replace his equipment, and to that end, his sister, Kseniia, who now lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., has posted a GoFundMe page under the headline “Ukrainian refugees starting new life from scratch,” that as of April 26 had raised more than $2,100.

The page also contains a translated letter from Eugene, that describes how he had been a successful videographer and film editor based in Kyiv, with one of his most recent projects being a 120-minute documentary about the legacy of the Holocaust in Ukraine, titled “Never Again,” while Anna pursued her studies at Kyiv National University of Trade and Economics.

“I never imagined that the horrors of war would knock at our doorstep,” he noted, in describing the waking nightmare of having to abruptly abandon their apartment amid the Russian attack on the airport and surrounding neighborhood. “In a moment, your life and plans are gone.”

“But we’re still facing an uncertain future. Before everything changed, the two of us were excited to plan our upcoming wedding. Now we must start from scratch. I know we will find our way: we are both hardworking and persistent, and I will do everything to find a job to support my family. But we face many challenges, and though it is really difficult for me to ask, I ask you now for your support to help us get back on our feet.

Eugene added that “all funds raised through GoFundMe will be used not only to help with our basic needs but also for me to get the job in the field of my professional skills.”

“We are grateful in advance for any help, and wish you peace and happiness,” his letter concludes.

Once he has replaced his equipment, Kazansky said, “Eugene can do all kinds of things in the field, including commercials, celebrations and anniversaries,” but in the meantime, was “ready to do anything” and was about to begin moving soil for some neighbors the following day.

“Ukrainians are very hard-working people,” he added.

All this being said, “they would love to return” to Ukraine.

“The only problem is their apartment building was destroyed, their car was abandoned, and they would have no place to stay,” Kazansky contended. “Of course, they have the desire, but practically it wouldn’t be possible to do in the near future.”

He added that the couple are “very grateful for the solidarity and help that the people of the United States have given to Ukraine.”

As for Eugene’s mother, Olga, whose dark 2014 premonition not only materialized, but set the stage for their ability to find a haven here, she now believes Russia has been thwarted in any plans it might have had to absorb and resettle Ukraine – but that doesn’t mean it won’t resort to increasingly ruthless behavior in an effort to bring that about.

“Before the situation becomes better for Ukraine, it will become worse,” she predicted. “But then it will improve, leading to a Ukrainian victory.”
