Veterans Wall of Honor Is Unveiled in Evesham, But Ceremony Leaves Some Invitees Dejected
A WIN-WIN DEBATE?
Frustration Evident Over Lack of Plaques for Three-Fifths of Participants at Crowded Venue By Bill Bonvie Staff Writer
EVESHAM—The official launch of Evesham Township’s ambitious and wellintentioned campaign to create a lasting tribute to its resident military veterans may have ended up achieving its objective (or at least the first phase of it), but was plagued by logistical miscalculations and less-thanideal conditions and timing in the process. The result was that the initial unveiling of the “Evesham Township Veterans Wall of Honor” left what appears to have been a significant number of the invitees disappointed and some more than a bit angry and frustrated at not having had their customlasered plaques or those of family members included in the ceremony, contrary to what they had expected when they showed up at the township municipal building on the evening of Oct. 27, some of the less ambulatory ones aided by wheelchairs and walkers. As it was, only some 92 of the 245 plaques slated for inclusion were on display on the wall of the building’s lobby at the time that the event took place, with the rest yet to be delivered, according to organizers. “A public relations disaster” was how the event was characterized to the Pine Barrens Tribune by former Republican Councilman and ex-U.S. Marine Robert DiEnna, echoing the sentiments of a number of other veterans that attended with whom this newspaper conducted phone interviews. That was followed one minute later by Theresa Velardi, manager for the Healey campaign, also writing in the subject line for a press release sent to the local media, “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
