Forest Fire Consumes 1,800 Acres Just Southwest of Atsion Lake; Shamong Mayor Says Lightning Cause of Blaze at County Border While Forest Fire Service Cautions There Is No Definitive Origin By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer
SHAMONG—A large forest fire that broke out Sunday just southwest of Atsion Lake, near the Shamong and Waterford municipal boundary, which also serves as the Burlington and Camden County line, has left 1,800 acres of the Wharton State Forest scorched. The blaze, dubbed the “Jack Swamp
Wildfire” due to its suspected origin near two low spots and ridges in Waterford Township, was first reported at 3:42 p.m. last Sunday, according to Albert Valentino, a fire control technician for the New Jersey Forest Fire Service who served as the blaze’s incident commander. Larry Hajna, a spokesperson with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), which oversees the
New Jersey Forest Fire Service, said the blaze was found west of Route 206 and south of Atsion Lake. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service’s Section B10 website noted that the blaze consumed land in a remote area of Wharton State Forest. “There was no property damage and no structures were ever threatened,” Hajna said.
