'Let Them Play' LRHSD Officials Attempt to Censor Press at Board of Education Meeting By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

Adam Cunard, 14, of Tabernacle wants to remain a Seneca Golden Eagle.

SHAMONG–Lenape Regional High School District (LRHSD) officials attempted to censor members of the local news media who gathered on Wednesday (Oct. 19) to cover a regular Board of Education meeting. The meeting was held at the Konstantinos Administration Building in Shamong. There was a greater presence of media at the meeting due to a controversial policy that has come to the forefront. Board policy #2630 prohibits homeschooled children from participating in activities such as field trips, clubs, band or football. “Students who are educated elsewhere than at school are not eligible to participate in LRHSD curricular, extra-curricular, or athletic programs or activities,” the policy reads in part. A Tabernacle family, who homeschool their children, is fighting to get the policy overturned as their sons would like to play football at Seneca High School. Community Rallies Behind “Let Them Play” Movement By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

SHAMONG–Adam Cunard, 14, of Tabernacle wants to continue to be able to wear a Seneca football jersey. Cunard’s indisputable love for the Seneca football family, including his teammates, was exhibited on Wednesday night (Oct. 19) as he addressed members of the Lenape Regional High School District Board of Education and administration about a policy preventing him from continuing as a Seneca athlete at the high school level. Despite a plea for open dialogue, most key administrators and all the board members in attendance remained silent on the issue. Superintendent Dr. Carol Birnbohm sped through a prepared statement.

Cunard, a homeschooled student who has been wearing a Seneca football jersey since he was five-years-old, described in detail how he felt Lenape District Board Policy #2630 was divisive, unwarranted, and unfair. Policy #2630 prohibits homeschooled children from participating in activities such as field trips, clubs, band, or football. “Students who are educated elsewhere than at school are not eligible to participate in LRHSD curricular, extra-curricular, or athletic programs or activities,” the policy reads in part. The Seneca Youth Football league, which implements football activities for those under the age of 14 (8th graders and under) have no rules prohibiting
