Large, Outspoken Crowd Gathers for Proceedings Posing Challenges Due to Pandemic Capacity Limits

By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

MEDFOR D —A cont roversial t ree ordinance, which has been revised some nine times since it was first presented to Medford Township Council by the Medford Township Environmental Affairs Advisory Committee some two years ago, has survived any potential cut by the governing body, which unanimously adopted it on Oct. 6 after a nearly two-and-half hour session that featured a large, outspoken crowd (with a mixture of opinions) that gathered despite the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The size of the crowd posed challenges for officials, who were limited to allowing council chambers to fill to a maximum of 25

percent of its capacity by an executive order signed in August by Democratic Governor Phil Murphy in response to the pandemic. Police Chief Richard J. Meder, who initially emerged from his office to unlock the doors to council chambers at the township’s Public Safety Building, quickly became tasked with crowd control, and for those unable to get inside council chambers to hear the proceedings, the municipality’s top cop tried to become a crowd pleaser of sorts, quietly asking an official up on the dais 23 minutes into the session to grab her laptop so that the overflow crowd could listen to the livestream of the meeting. Eventually, the livestream was set up, though it was on a slight delay, and many reportedly still

SOUTHAMPTON—A number of changes and preliminary investigations related to zoning and potential future real-estate development in Southampton Township have either been considered or put into motion during the past few Southampton Township Committee meetings, and more action is expected during the governing body’s upcoming meetings. Among the items being considered for possible adoption are three ordinances, one of which would result in township-owned land on Buddtown Road, east of the Southampton

had difficulty following the meeting due to conversation in the building’s lobby. Meder, who often conducted headcounts throughout the proceedings, opened the door to council chambers numerous times to let citizens wishing to speak on the ordinance inside, all while those who had just spoken on the issue departed (even sometimes asked to leave council chambers so others could come inside). The police chief, who heard apparent disapproval from the overflow crowd over the circumstances, was seen numerous times conferring with both Township Manager Kathy Burger and Township See STANDING/ Page 11

PEMBERTON—A t r iple shooting in the Sunbury Village section of Pemberton Township, and another shooting in the Oak Pines section of the township, which occurred just hours and miles apart, are both under investigation by Pemberton Township Police as they work to determine if there is a nexus between the two incidents. The Sunbury shooting incident that occurred around 1:38 a.m. on Oct. 10 involved individuals being fired upon in front of a residence in 100 block of Kinsley Road, while the Oak Pines See SHOOTING/ Page 8
