A CHECK ON INTRUDERS

Pemberton School District Is First to Receive a County Grant Through Program Aimed at Reinforcing High-School Security By Bill Bonvie Staff Writer

PEMBERTON—The Pember ton Township School District has been chosen to usher in a county-wide campaign to buttress the level of protection given to high-school students and faculty against anyone intent on doing them harm. A $1.2 million school security grant received by the Pemberton Township

School District on Oct. 10 is the first such allocation to be awarded by the Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders — one t he boa rd has referred to as a “major milestone” in a “groundbreaking initiative to enhance the safety and security” of all of the county’s public high schools. The district was first to submit an application for such a grant under the four-month-old $20 million voluntary program, which is administered on a

first-come, first-served basis with no deadline to apply, according to a news release issued by the freeholders. “We’re extremely grateful to the Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders for this generous school security grant,” said Pemberton School Superintendent Tony Trongone in response to the news. “Not only does it align with our plans to enhance security See CHECK/ Page 12

PEMBERTON—A raging house fire Tuesday night claimed the lives of two beloved elderly residents of the 500 block of Willow Boulevard in the Browns Mills section of Pemberton Township and caused the adult son of one of them to be hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The blaze, which broke out in an attached garage shortly before 8:30 p.m., burned so intensely for a time that the heat melted the siding on the house next door. Its cause was reported by the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office to still be under investigation as of press time. The prosecutor’s office identified the deceased couple as Lore Smith and George Pikunis, both 92. Smith was pronounced dead after being transported to Deborah Hospital, while Pikunis, her companion, is reported to have died at the scene. Smith’s son, whose name was said to be Kurt Smith, was reportedly transported to Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, suffering from smoke inhalation, and said to be in stable condition. A hospital spokesperson contacted on Thursday said there had been a fire victim flown in and admitted, but was unable to provide his name or condition. Tina Muccie, a fourth occupant of the house and caretaker of the couple interviewed by two Philadelphia TV news outlets, WPVI-TV, 6 ABC and WTXF TV, Fox 29, managed to escape after reportedly trying to extricate Lore Smith from a bedroom of the house before being overcome by smoke. She could not be reached for comment on this story. Muccie, sitting in her car, told Fox 29 the son had been in the garage when the fire broke out. The remains of a motorcycle, which neighbors said belonged to Kurt Smith, could be seen in the burned-out garage. Bill Goodman, who lives in the house next door, said he saw the smoke and flames coming from the adjacent structure shortly after arriving home and dropping off Kurt Smith. He added that he heard the screams of the occupants and ran inside to try to locate them, but couldn’t. By then the police and the fire chief, according to Goodman showed up and proceeded to break a window of the bedroom where the occupants were trapped by the inferno. “That’s when they moved me out of the way,” he said. Pemberton Fire Chief Craig Augustoni said on Thursday that 50 firefighters had responded See INFERNO/ Page 22
