Pemberton Residents, ‘In Several Areas of the Community,’ Facing Financial Hardships, Are Allegedly Using Portable Generators to Power Their Homes Due to Electric Shutoffs as Temporary Moratorium on Disconnects Doesn’t Apply to Any Made Before March 16

‘Day-After-Day’ Use of Generators Results in Noise, Odor and Safety Concerns By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

PEMBERTON—Several homeowners in Pemberton Township are purportedly facing such severe financial hardships recently, they are turning to the use of portable generators as a primary source of electricity, unable to afford electricity from Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L), the major utility that provides electric service to most properties here. The financial hardships apparently started before the Coronavirus pandemic’s social distancing measures and impact on the economy, and therefore, a temporary moratorium on utility shutoffs ordered by Democratic Governor Phil Murphy has done little to address the issue occurring locally.

The increasing use of generators “in several areas of the community” for nonweather-related emergencies is “negatively affecting multiple residents” quality-oflife and creating potential safety issues, according to Mayor David Patriarca. Mu n icipal of ficials, accordi ng to Patriarca, at the behest of the concerned residents, are now exploring their options to resolve the situation, including amending existing noise and zoning ordinances. “I need your help,” said James Gray, a resident of the 400 block of Tulip Street, where one of several homes being powered by a generator is located, to Pemberton Township Council during its Oct. 21 meeting. “Our whole community needs your help.”

Gray asserted that his Tulip Street neighbor has been running a portable generator “all hours of the day and night; day-after-day” since February “as a as a primary source of electricity.” “The sound goes around to the whole area of the community,” he said, contending the generator is parked right alongside his house. “That is not even taking into consideration the CO2 gases (it is releasing).” Gray contended that the Tulip Street matter has been in the court system, but the individual using the generator has been able to side-step a court order allowing its use only from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and has since not shown up for a scheduled

PEMBERTON—A 27-year-old man was fatally shot while riding inside a vehicle during the early morning hours of Nov. 3 in the Sunbury Village section of Pemberton Township. According to Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina and Pemberton Township Police Chief David King, Shaimere Turner, 27, was struck by gunshots just after 4 a.m. when the vehicle was in the 100 block of Kinsley Road. Woodland Land Use Board Gives Its OK for Cell Tower in Downtown Chatsworth By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

WOODLAND —A proposed 120 -foot cellphone tower slated to be erected “right behind” the Woodland Township Volunteer Fire and EMS Company’s firehouse in the Chatsworth section of the municipality has been approved by the Woodland Township Land Use Board, following the issuance of a Certificate of Approval from the Pinelands Commission. The land use board gave its OK for the project to proceed during two recent meetings, despite a petition (signed by mostly residents who live in the proposed site’s vicinity) objecting to the cellphone tower’s placement, but “supporting
