Gas Tax Hike Takes Center Stage at Candidates Forum in LeisureTowne By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer
SOUTHAMPTON—A 23-cent gasoline tax hike signed into law late last year took center stage at a candidate’s forum hosted by the LeisureTowne Civic League Association on Oct. 25. George Youngkin, a Democrat running for an 8th District state Senate seat, along with Democratic freeholder candidates Tom Pullion and Balvir Singh, took their Republican opponents to task over their support for the gas tax in front of an audience of nearly 50 people. The gas-tax discussion ramped up quickly during the forum after an attendee asked the candidates to “please fix” the Centerton Road
Bridge in Mount Laurel. The bridge, which connects Mount Laurel to Willingboro and Westampton, was closed more than two years ago after engineers deemed it structurally unsafe. An estimated 14,000 vehicles per day crossed the bridge when it was open to traffic. Interstate 295 has since become an alternate route. The Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders voted on Dec. 9, 2015 to demolish the bridge. A few months later, the county ordered a feasibility study on a possible replacement. The study is supposed to produce a list of permits that would be required if the county decided to proceed with constructing a
new bridge. At the time, county officials were vocal that they could not consider moving forward with any improvements until the state’s Transportation Trust Fund was replenished. Replacing the bridge may cost somewhere between $15 and $20 million. Republican Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio, who is being challenged by Pullion and Singh, stood in front of the bridge in 2014 with state Senate President Stephen M. Sweeney, a Democrat from Gloucester County. Sweeney appeared with Garganio to tout his fund replenishment proposal, the 23-cent gas tax. The gas tax was signed into law on Oct. 14,
2016 by Republican Governor Chris Christie. Republican Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, along with several Republicans in the state Legislature, were adamantly opposed to increasing the gas tax and fought Christie and Sweeney. The proposal also drew opposition from some of the Democrats in the state Legislature. Senator Dawn Marie Addiego, Assemblyman Joseph Howarth, and Assemblywoman Maria Rodriquez-Gregg—Republicans from the 8th District—voted to increase the gas tax and were some of the bill’s biggest supporters. Since the 23-cent gas tax was imposed on Nov. 1, 2016, the county has not taken any
