Strong Show of Support for Tabernacle Rescue Squad Forces Township Committee to Table Proposal to End Its Reign as Sole Emergency-Service Provider By Mark Hatoff

TABERNACLE—A sizeable show of public support and unity for the Tabernacle Rescue Squad (TRS) appears to have convinced the Tabernacle Township Committee to reconsider its proposal to repeal an ordinance that designates the squad as the sole emergency medical-service provider in Tabernacle Township. The ordinance repeal, introduced by a 3-2 vote last month following an executive session of the committee—and allegedly without any notice to the squad—was tabled on Oct. 22 following a public hearing that drew a standing-room only crowd and heard from 17 impassioned residents and stakeholders. The ordinance repeal was courted by Public Safety Director Arch Liston after he discovered that the municipality had never formulated an agreement with the rescue squad in its history and attempts to do so in 2016 were unsuccessful after contract negotiations broke down. Liston, who told the committee that a formal agreement is a necessity, urged the governing body to repeal the rescue squad ordinance to force the organization to come to the negotiating table. “In speaking with Township Solicitor Peter Lange, it was brought forth that if we’re going to enter into contract negotiations, we have the process of repealing this ordinance,” Liston said. “If we repeal, this allows us to go into negotiations clean with the existing squad. TABERNACLE—Col. William “Corky” Lowe, a 13-year emergency management coordinator of Tabernacle Township who retired April 1, has practically thrown his hat in the ring for one of two open seats on the Tabernacle Township Committee in Tuesday’s election. His unofficial candidacy, which has gained traction in the municipality, comes on the heels of the committee’s introduction of an ordinance to repeal the one designating the Tabernacle Rescue Squad (TRS) as the sole emergency medicalservice provider in Tabernacle Township.
The ordinance repeal was courted by Public Safety Director Arch Liston after he discovered that the municipality had never formulated an agreement with the rescue squad in its history and that attempts to do so in 2016 were unsuccessful after contract negotiations broke down. The repeal was introduced by a 3-2 committee vote on Sept. 24, but stalled on Oct 22. following a backlash that saw Tabernacle Town Hall fill to capacity. It has been tabled to November. Lowe, before the rescue squad issue cropped up and around the time of his retirement, said See NAME/ Page 12
