Playground at Pinelands Regional High School Tests Positive for Asbestos By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer
LITTLE EGG HARBOR—A playground at Pinelands Regional High School has somehow been contaminated with asbestos. The playground, which is used for a child-care program that the district operates, was tested by TTI Environmental for asbestos on Oct. 18. “We had soil and sample testing of the playground,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Maryann Banks. “A report came in on Oct. 30 and testing was taken on Oct. 18. There was a
finding of some non-friable debris and material in the soil and mulch in that playground.” The test was performed after pictures surfaced online from the week of Oct. 2-9 showing roofers carelessly removing debris from the high school’s roof, near the playground—although officials have not said definitively that it was the images that prompted the testing. N.J. Department of Labor Threatens Pinelands Regional with $13,500 Fine By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer
LITTLE EGG HARBOR—The Pinelands Regional School District is facing $13,500 in fines after the New Jersey Office of Public Employees’ Occupational Safety and Health, part of the state’s Department of Labor, inspected the district’s high school and found three violations of the Public Employees’ Occupational Safety and Health Act (PEOSHA). According to a “Notice of Order to Comply” received by the school district on Oct. 17, an
Aug. 8 inspection of the high school found two serious violations and one not-so-serious violation of the PEOSHA. The inspection was prompted by a complaint. The PEOSHA requires the district to provide asbestos awareness training yearly to all employees who perform housekeeping operations. The training must educate the employees about the health effects of asbestos, locations of asbestos-containing material (ACM) and presumed asbestos containing material (PACM)
