Graduate Returns to Steer Alma Mater Shared Superintendent Takes Helm at Pinelands Regional After Facing ‘Confrontation’ By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer
LITTLE EGG HARBOR—Dr. Melissa A. McCooley, embarking on her 20th year as an educator, took over the reins of the Pinelands Regional School District (PRSD), the home of the Wildcats, as superintendent this week. “I cannot express in words how much this opportunity means to me,” said the 1994 district grad. “As a graduate of Pinelands, I have a great deal of pride for the school and community.” McCooley, who also serves as superintendent of the Little Egg Harbor School District (LEHSD), filled the regional school district’s top leadership position through a shared superintendent agreement that has widespread support— although her appointment was not without a certain degree of controversy. The PRSD and LEHSD received the go-ahead from the New Jersey Department of Education on May 16 to proceed with the agreement. The Pinelands Regional Board of Education voted unanimously to enter into the agreement on May 23 and the Little Egg Harbor Board of Education voted 6-1 to carry out the agreement on May 25. Dr. Donald Gross cast the lone dissenting vote “for reasons I have confided to the board attorney.” “I look at this as trend-setting for South Jersey,” said Susan Ernst, Pinelands Regional Board of Education president, of the agreement. “It is very common in North Jersey, but not so common here.” The agreement was signed by Ernst and Little Egg Harbor Board of Education President August Daleo during a short ceremony in LEHSD’s Frog Pond Elementary School media center on May 25. The ceremony was part of a special Little Egg Harbor Board of Education meeting. Daleo, Ernst, and McCooley exchanged hugs and kisses after the signing as several top officials from both school districts looked on—including Dr. Cheryl Stevenson, who had been serving as the regional school district’s interim
