75 acres of the nearly 220-acre Good Farm on Red Lion Road and Church Road are slated for recreational facilities.

“It is just a fact of life. We are playing on dumps. Filled ground. Dumps. I was there. I helped build it years ago. I know. You better hope right now that nothing ever happens to any kid who slips and falls in a hole out there or gets gas from stuff coming out of the ground.” – Harry Thompson, Rancocas Valley Baseball League Manager By Douglas D. SOUTHAMPTON– Officials in Southampton have announced their plans for the first phase of a major construction project that will transform a large portion of the Good Farm into

recreational facilities. The announcement was made last month at a special township committee meeting. The meeting drew about 100 attendees. “I called this special meeting together so that we can discuss the Good Farm,” said Mayor James F. Young, Sr. Rakesh Darji, a special-project engineer for the township, said the first phase of the project will involve a portion of the farm which sits closer to Red Lion Road. The farm adjoins both Red Lion Road and Church Road. “The idea for phase one is to construct two fields,” he said. “A ball field and a multi-purpose field for soccer, football and lacrosse.” Darji added that he expects the first phase to also include the construction of one parking lot, an access driveway and associated drainage. “We would like to have phase one under con-

struction by the summer of 2017 and completed by the fall of 2017,” he said. Officials now say the first phase of the project will cost about $1,000,000. The township has about $560,000 in funding obtained through Burlington County municipal park development grants. The committee has applied for additional grant funding and hopes to receive another $250,000 to dedicate towards the project. “The primary funding for this construction is grant money, not township taxpayer money,” said Committeeman Michael Mikulski. “It is grant money from the county that we applied for, we being the committee, over the previous three years and we have applied (for it) again.” Officials provided meeting attendees with an updated design for the planned facilities. A few amenities were added to the design,

while the number of parking spaces were reduced. The number of acres slated for active and passive recreation has also increased from 65 to 75. “It is a 75-acre piece,” Darji said. “It is a fairly large piece of land.” The overall project now involves the construction of three multi-purpose fields, four baseball fields, an amphitheater, a bocce court, a sledding hill, a skating pond, two playgrounds, a concession building and pavilion, a lawn picnic area, one storage building and a dog park. A multi-purpose community center is also proposed which would contain senior areas and an indoor basketball court. “The idea is to have a property or facility that is usable not just by one group in the community,” Darji said. “But to have something to offer to
