3-Alarm Fire Destabilizes Home, Forcing Emergency Demolition

PEMBERTON—A 3-alarm fire tore through a two and half story home in Pemberton Township last week, causing the structure to become unstable and necessitating an emergency demolition. The blaze broke out in the 438 Pemberton Bypass home around 11:01 a.m. on Dec. 29. Pemberton Township Fire Chief Craig Augustoni said Michael DiTaranto, the home’s owner, along with his wife and two children were inside the home when a smoke detector in the attic went off. Augustoni said DiTaranto went to check the attic, smelled smoke, called 9-1-1 and evacuated his family. The fire chief said officers from the Pemberton Township Police Department arrived at the scene within a couple of minutes due to their headquarters’ close proximity to

the home. He said as the officers arrived, they observed smoke and radioed dispatch that there was an active fire. As firefighters descended on the scene, flames were seen shooting up from the roof of the home. “The fire went to three alarms,” Augustoni said. “It wasn’t necessarily the intensity of the fire that necessitated the three alarms, but rather the intensity of the work that had to be done, combined with the cold weather conditions. It was brutal on the guys.” He said solar panels on part of the home’s roof caused several complications for firefighters as they blocked access to the fire and were potentially generating an electrical current. “The weight of the solar panels on the roof also posed safety concerns as the fire continued to weaken the roof,” Augustoni
