Issues Found During Contentious Building Tours Leave Public Dumbfounded By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer
LITTLE EGG HARBOR—Pinelands Regional High School, closed since October due to safety hazards and sicknesses resulting from a roofing project debacle, reopened late last month, but not without commotion. The commotion started when district officials offered public tours of the school the day before its Jan. 17. reopening. Two tours were held in the morning, while three were held in the evening. The tours were offered to ease parent and community fears that the building was still unsafe for occupancy; despite cleaning, repair and restoration work to address the hazards and illnesses. Several parents and community members gathered at the school for the first two tours of the day. After the parents and community members toured the building, it became evident that the school was not ready to be reopened just yet with several problems, some unrelated to the roofing debacle, discovered. Many of the school’s portable fire extinguishers were past due for their annual inspection—some two years past due. Some of the facility’s fire extinguisher cabinets were empty. Flammable areas were not properly ventilated.

LITTLE EGG HARBOR—Another round of construction at Pinelands Regional High School could result in the closure of the building during the entire 2018-19 school year and the addition of classroom trailers at Pinelands Regional Junior High School. The impermanent closure of the high school is one of several possibilities that the district is looking at to be able to carry out the next phases of a $53-million bond referendum that is funding “nofrill renovations” to the building. Acting Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Stevenson has said repeatedly in recent days that no decision has been made on whether to close the high school later this year; and that many options besides closing it exist and need to be discussed with district staff, professionals and the community. But at a Jan. 17 meeting of the Pinelands Regional Board of Education, the board heard from its construction professionals who suggested that the high school should close for the upcoming school year to allow for the completion of structural renovations to
LITTLE EGG HARBOR—After a tumultuous first phase of construction tied to a $53-million bond referendum for “no-frills renovations,” Pinelands Regional High School District officials are discussing how to move forward as they deal with unexpected delays, quality concerns and demands to hold their contractors accountable for mishaps. As previously reported, the mishaps included the careless removal of asbestos-containing debris from Pinelands Regional High School’s roof. The carelessness ultimately led to the closing of the high school from Oct. 13 to Jan. 17 and split sessions at Pinelands Regional Junior High School. At a Pinelands Regional Board of Education meeting last month, Board Solicitor Amy L. Houck responded to calls from the public for accountability. She said the board was meeting behind closed doors to discuss its options to seek accountability, but that she could not provide details about those discussions due to attorney-client privilege and
