BALLOT BLUNDER

Unknown Number of Mail-In Ballots List Incorrect Person for Committee By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

SOUTHAMPTON—A major error has appeared on at least some Republican Southampton Township mail-in-ballots and county officials, as of press time, are tightlipped about how it happened and what they plan to do fix the situation. The error was discovered by a staffer of this newspaper last Saturday evening shortly after opening their ballot that arrived in the mail earlier in the day. The ballot that arrived in the mailbox of the staffer, who lives in Southampton’s Voting District 3, listed Daniel L. James and Elizabeth H. Rossell as Republican

candidates for Southampton Township Committee in Column 1. While Rossell is the deputy mayor of Southampton and is running to seek re-election to the township committee, James is not running for elected office in Southampton. He resigned last year from the Washington Township Committee and stated he was a resident of Washington Township during one of its recent meetings. Although James could not be reached for comment on this story, he maintains an Egg Harbor City landline telephone number with an answering machine. Egg Harbor City is the mailing destination city for Washington Township.

Southampton Committeeman Michael Mikulski is running on the same ticket with Rossell, as listed by the Burlington County Clerk’s Office website and confirmed by Southampton Township Clerk Kathleen D. Hoffman. “Oh lord!” sa id Hof f m a n, a lso Southampton’s administrator, when showed a picture of the erroneous ballot last Saturday evening. “They have that all messed up.” This newspaper, before breaking the story Saturday night online, learned that other GOP mail-in ballots distributed in the municipality were also printed with the error. MEDFORD LAKES—A bond ordinance allocating funding for a major rehabilitation of Medford Lakes’ aging sewer system, one that has had a history of recent line failures, has been approved. The approval of the roughly $9 million bond comes after nearly 15 years of Medford Lakes Borough Council discussion of how and when to rehabilitate the sewer system. The bond was unanimously passed by council on April 24. “It’s not just Medford Lakes that takes advantage of this sewer system,” said Borough Manager Dr. Robert Burton during the council meeting. “(Some) businesses in Medford Township, the YMCA in the Pines camp and Shawnee High School do as well.” The sewer system in Medford Lakes was originally constructed in the 1930s. It was last upgraded in the 1960s and 70s. According to the bond ordinance, about $9,034,615 has now been appropriated to line the sewer system, which is currently comprised of approximately 90 percent non-PVC material. The installation of new interior lining will fit approximately 110,000 lineal feet of eight inch and 12-inch sanitary sewer pipe, along with up to 20 manholes, measuring four-foot in diameter. The borough estimates the sewer project cost to be about $7 million. However, an H2Loan loan will include monies for unanticipated cost overages. The H2Loan, which Burton described as having a very low interest rate of .9 percent, is much better than the current bond interest rate which is between 2-2.5 percent. The lower interest rate could result See SEWER/ Page 10
