Hundreds Gather at Medford Lakes Beach for Tribute to Local Army Paratrooper Killed in Training Exercise By Mark Hatoff

MEDFORD LAK ES— Most people in Medford Lakes Borough probably either knew or knew of U.S. Army Paratrooper Spc. Nicholas DiMona III. On the evening of April 7, the residents of this bucolic, 1.2-square-mile community had an opportunity to show just how well loved and respected he was here, albeit under sad circumstances. Paratrooper Spc. D i Mo n a , a 2 0 -ye a r- old Nicholas DiMona III Medford Lakes resident and 2016 Shawnee High School graduate, died on March 30 after being shot during a live-fire exercise as part of readiness training near Fort Greely, Alaska, according to an U.S. Army spokesman’s statement to the Associated Press. He had been stationed there for the past year as part of the Army’s 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Hundreds of residents and friends of DiMona and his family attended a solemn vigil and tribute lit by candles and torches at the borough’s Beach 1. The event was organized by volunteers from the Medford Lakes Colony Club, veterans from Operation Yellow Ribbon, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and municipal employees. In addition to lantern bags with written messages that lined the edge of the beach and the walking bridge, DiMona’s face adorned large photo boards displayed on
