Hundreds Gather at Medford Lakes Beach for Tribute to Local Army Paratrooper Killed in Training Exercise

MEDFORD LAK ES— Most people in Medford Lakes Borough probably either knew or knew of U.S. Army Paratrooper Spc. Nicholas DiMona III. On the evening of April 7, the residents of this bucolic, 1.2-square-mile community had an opportunity to show just how well loved and respected he was here, albeit under sad circumstances.

Paratrooper Spc. D i Mo n a , a 2 0 -ye a r- old Nicholas DiMona III Medford Lakes resident and 2016 Shawnee High School graduate, died on March 30 after being shot during a live-fire exercise as part of readiness training near Fort Greely, Alaska, according to an U.S. Army spokesman’s statement to the Associated Press. He had been stationed there for the past year as part of the Army’s 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

Hundreds of residents and friends of DiMona and his family attended a solemn vigil and tribute lit by candles and torches at the borough’s Beach 1. The event was organized by volunteers from the Medford Lakes Colony Club, veterans from Operation Yellow Ribbon, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and municipal employees.

MEDFORD—Two proposed amendments to existing Medford Township code have been introduced by Medford Council that would allow the municipality to better regulate stored vehicles in the township.

The proposed amendments were introduced by council on April 2.

However, creation of a new law that would prohibit certain commercial vehicles from being stored on residential property, or in public rights-of-way zoned residential, was not introduced, despite such a measure having been discussed by council in March to complement the amendments. The governing body held off on introducing such a measure after members of the small home-business community claimed it would shut their companies down, or force them to relocate.

The proposed amendments and new law discussion come as the municipality continues to crack down on what it perceives as unkept or aesthetically displeasing properties and possessions throughout the township.

The crackdown, being led by Zoning Officer Beth Portocalis, began after council received complaints and a petition last year over an abandoned property at 12 Arkansas

Trail that was giving off an obnoxious odor.

The property was filled with standing water, harbored excessive insects and contained a home infested with vermin. The home was eventually condemned and removed through an emergency declaration, but complaints about ot her unsightly proper ties have followed, according to Portocalis.

Council, at the request of Portocalis, and as part of the same crackdown, prohibited bamboo and other non-native invasive species of vegetation from being grown on “any tract of land situated within the Township of Medford” in December 2018. Residents now face a hefty fine, or even imprisonment, if they are caught maintaining or growing it on their property.

Portocalis said in November that she recently “encountered ba mboo growth issues” when she recommended the bamboo measure.

During a March 5 council meeting, the zoning officer claimed that there is now a new problem: a “proliferation of oversized commercial vehicles” in the municipality.

“We have a situation with an oversized commercial vehicle…with decals…being parked on residential property,” Portocalis said on March 5. “It (the matter) was taken to Burlington County Superior Court. Judge

Ronald E. Bookbinder suggested that we look for other alternatives.”

Portocalis added that by reviewing similar situations in other municipalities, she found that they had been handled through their vehicle or administrative code.

Portocalis recommended during the March 5 council meeting that the governing body pass one of the two proposed amendments to better differentiate between recreation and recreational motorsport vehicles. She indicated that this change would ensure that RVs would not be subjected to any future storage restrictions, per the wishes of council.

“As council discussed in the past, the one exemption was recreation or RV vehicles,” Portocalis said. “Unfortunately, in our code, the definition of recreation vehicles is more for ATVs, dirt bikes and things like that.

Going forward, we will (rename the chapter) recreational motorsport vehicles.”

Another Entry for Assembly Seat in 8th District Democratic Primary Cites Record as Problem Solver

M A R LT O N — Voters in t he 8t h District Democratic Primary will be finding the name of another contender for state Assembly on thei r ballot in addition to the two officially endorsed by the Burlington Johnny Bravo County Democratic Committee—one that may put some of them in mind of a former TV cartoon character.

Candidate Johnny Bravo is a 40-year Marlton resident who was known simply as John Bravo when he previously (and unsuccessfully) ran for a seat on the Evesham Council in 2016, and who would now like voters of the district to think of him as a “can-do” candidate with a proven track record as a problem solver, he told the Pine Barrens Tribune in a phone interview last week.

Bravo, 74, holds a degree in chemical engineering from Rutgers University in 1967 and also studied policy, management a nd gover n ment ad m in ist ration as a n undergraduate at both Harvard and the University of Virginia. Before retiring in 2002, he spent 35 years working for the Department of Defense, beginning with a summer job he got at the Frankford Arsenal that soon resulted in his being sent around the country consulting with defense contractors on how to improve problematic products.

That work eventually led to his having headed an investigation of the Amoco Chemical Plant disaster which killed six workers, injured twenty, and destroyed the entire plant in New Castle, Del., in 1980. His investigative report, he said, was circulated worldwide and resulted in his receiving a letter of commendation from the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers Union Management.

What Bravo claims best demonstrated his ability to solve problems was what he accomplished back in the late 1990s, when he was put in charge of the environmental closure and remediation of the Defense Supply Center in South Philadelphia.

“I had to organize lawyers, engineers, and contractors. I held public meetings every couple of weeks. I had to convince the public I was doing the right thing, and take all their concerns into account,” he said, noting that residents who were very angry at first, then “after a month were making me cookies.”

But when it was discovered that a couple million gallons of oil were floating atop the aquifer that lay underneath a lot of homes in the area, Bravo said he was able to negotiate a solution that involved building a 45,000-gallon holding tank and digging 20 test wells that were actually used to pump out the oil, which he then arranged with Sunoco, the presumed source, to remove for free. That resolution, he added, got him an accolade from the Philadelphia City Council in 2002.

It is also an example of how he envisions doing the job of assemblyman if he is elected.

“The first thing I would do is to have listening sessions—go around to all the towns in the district and let people tell me what they want me to do,” Bravo said. “I want to address their issues, and the things that affect them.

I don’t have a particular personal agenda.”

Bravo’s interest in politics goes back to his having taken a day off from school to listen to Democratic presidential nominee Adlai Stevenson in 1956 at Camden City Hall, he recounted. While in college, he joined the Rockefeller faction of the Young Republicans “whose philosophy at that time was more akin to that of our modern-day Democrats.”

While he is now running under the slogan of “A true Democrat,” Bravo maintains that he can work effectively with Republicans as well and “with a whole lot of people who have a dichotomy of views.”

In addition to his previous run for Evesham Council, he has also served as a Cub Scout leader and coached baseball and soccer in the township. He is also the co-owner of Bravo Entertainment, whose offshoot, the Leonardo DaVinci Society, provides annual monetary awards and certificates for student projects at the Delaware Valley Science Fair.

He will be running in the June primary for one of two 8th District Assembly seats against two attorneys who are the Burlington County Democratic Committee’s choice, Gina LaPlaca, of Lumberton, and Mark Natale, another Marlton resident. Bravo, however, claims to be favored by Democrats in Camden County, a few of whose municipalities are in the 8th District as well.

Whichever candidates win the Democratic 8th District Primary will then face off in November against the two winners of the Republican primary. GOP Primary contenders for Assembly include the two choices of the Burlington County Republican Committee, incumbent Ryan Peters and retiring Burlington County Sheriff Jean Stanfield, along with the other 8th District incumbent, Joe Howarth, and international lawyer Jason Huf, of Lumberton.

Twice-Monthly Farm Market Planned for Medford Village

M EDFOR D —T he Medford Business Association, in conjunction with Destination Medford, is hoping to promote the downtown area of Medford Township, also known as Medford Village, by holding a twice-monthly farmers market beginning this summer in Still Park.

Main Street Market, according to one of its organizers, Lower Forge Brewery Coowner Pola Galie, will be modeled after the Burlington County’s Farmers Market.

The market is tentatively scheduled to be open on June 8 and 22, July 13 and 27, August 10 and 25, September 14 and 28, and October 12 and 26—rain or shine.

Dates may soon be scheduled for an “invitation only” November and December farmers market, as well. Galie said she is searching for an indoor location to hold it for the holidays given the colder temperatures expected at that time of year.

“Quality farmers, food artisans and fine craft vendors” are invited to take part in the farmers market. 40 vendor spaces are expected to be available at the park, behind 17 N. Main St. “I think it is a great idea,” said Mayor Charles “Chuck” Watson. “They seem to be very successful in a lot of towns.”

Live music may also be featured during the farmers market, Galie said.

Galie told Medford Council on April 2 that the Medford Business Association will handle the finances and insurance for the farmers market. They added that vendors will be required to sign a liability waiver, and will be responsible for bringing their own tents, tables and chairs.

“It is a non-profit venture,” Galie said.

“Medford Business Association is a non-profit.

All of the proceeds will go to supporting the market along with its advertising and marketing. If there is any money left over, it will go towards supporting the downtown merchants in Medford Village.”

She added that everyone involved is going to be a volunteer.

Medford Township Police Chief Richard J. Meder requested a get-together with organizers to address any parking and traffic concerns.

The farmers market, according to Township Solicitor Timothy Prime, will likely need to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the township.

Galie said five farmers are already planning to participate in the event with a variety of produce and flowers.

“We will get a meeting together so we can hash out some of the logistics,” said Township Manager Kathy Burger. “Then we can talk to Mr. Prime about all of the details of a memorandum agreement.”

Evesham Police Chief Reports Drops in Crime, DWIs for 2018 Concurrent With Community Policing Expansion

EVESHAM—An eight percent decrease in crime and a 12 percent reduction in arrests for DWI (driving while intoxicated), corresponding with an expansion in community policing, were among the encouraging trends outlined by Evesham Township Police Chief Christopher Chew during a summary of his department’s annual report delivered at the township council’s regular meeting on April 2.

One of the key 2018 initiatives described by Chew in his 40-minute review was a collaborative effort with school officials, called the Class 3 Police Officer Program, in which retired officers with 25-30 years of experience are placed in school buildings to help keep them safe and secure.

“This came at low cost, in a set salary and without having to pay the benefits of other officers,” Chew said.

“This program frees up our full-time staff to provide other benefits to the community, while providing more full-time service to our schools.”

One of those benefits, he said, has been the expansion of community policing units, which allows officers to interact with the public in every neighborhood and to proactively participate in community policing events.

Other new initiatives detailed by Chew involved technology and substance-abuse treatment.

In the past year, he said, the department has made a technology upgrade by merging all of its video equipment.

“Before, we had different technology platforms that captured our body cameras, car cameras, in-house and interrogation room cameras, and all of our data was stored in different locations,” he said. “Now all of that data is on one portal called Axon, a cloud-based storage system. All electronic devices are now automatically synched, which saves time (by not having to pull video

from different sources) and server space.”

Chew added that the Evesham Township Police Department was one of the first in the state to get all of its video on one platform.

In regard to the treatment of substance abusers, Evesham’s police department is also the first in Southern New Jersey to institute a Straight to Treatment program, something Chew mentioned as being very close to his heart. On Mondays, from 12 Noon to 7 p.m., the department now makes volunteer healthcare professionals available at its headquarters to help anyone who may have addiction issues.

“Whether they have drugs on them, warrants, it doesn’t matter,” Chew said. “We are not going to arrest them. We will clear their warrants and dispose of their illegal narcotics. The primary mission is to have people come into a safe environment, speak to us, and then we take them to healthcare professionals who can get them straight into a free treatment plan. In one year, we have helped over 84 people. Our goal is to have this available 24/7.”

Some trends that the police department saw in Evesham during the past year were: • 8 percent reduction in crime; • 1.4 percent increase in calls for service (totaling 31,667 in 2018), which have continually gone up each year, contrasted with just 22,000 calls made to the police department in 2011; • 7 percent decrease in domestic violence violations, which Chew attributed to his department investing heavily in officer training on identifying issues before they come to an arrest situation or involve children; • 57 percent reduction in the value of stolen property, from over $1 million in property stolen in See CRIME/ Page 13

Peters Asks Towns to Oppose ‘Rain Tax’

MEDFORD—Republican 8th Legislative District Assemblyman Ryan Peters is calling on all municipalities in his region to band together by passing a “No Rain Tax Resolution.”

One Pinelands municipality has already said it will take the pledge.

“I’ll be reaching out to every mayor, deputy mayor and council member I can to implore them not to crush our residents with another new tax,” said Peters in a statement to this newspaper. “If I can get enough towns to band together, hopefully more will follow and residents and businesses won’t ever have to see a rain tax added to their monthly bills.”

In March, Democratic Governor Phil Murphy signed legislation allowing municipalities and counties to establish stormwater utilities. Under the new law, if either choose to do so, they will be allowed to apply an undetermined tax on property and business owners based on the amount of impervious surface they have.

The permissible tax has been dubbed the “rain tax” because it involves rainwater runoff.

“When you lay your head on your pillow to go to sleep at night in New Jersey, you never know what new tax you are going to wake up to,” Peters said. “No matter how hard we fight in Trenton, one-party rule in the state makes it difficult to stop these types of fiscally harmful policies, so I am taking the fight locally.”

Although the revenue is meant to be mainly used for managing the flow of stormwater, the law states that 5 percent, or $50,000 of the revenue, is required to be paid to the state and another 5 percent can be used for a locality’s general fund.

“When Democrats introduced this, they justified it by saying towns need a funding source to treat stormwater runoff,” Peters said. “I am sorry, but are the state’s highest property taxes in the nation not enough of a funding source?”

New Jersey has the highest average property taxes in the nation at $8,767, according to Peters. The state was also named as having the worst business tax climate in the nation by the non-profit Tax Foundation.

“This won’t only create another tax separate from what property taxpayers and business owners pay, but it will also create another level of bureaucracy and salaries that any new revenue will go towards funding,” Peters said. “Towns have public works and other departments that budget property taxes to handle this.”

The assemblyman told this newspaper that several local mayors and other elected officials have already responded to his calls and plan to bring up the resolution at a future town meeting. They include representatives from Medford Township, Hammonton, Shamong Township and Woodland Township.

“This is an unneeded tax in our town that would also add an expensive layer of oversight,” said Medford Mayor Charles “Chuck” Watson. “Medford has systems in place to treat stormwater. We plan to pass this at our (upcoming) meeting.”

At an April 2 Medford Council meeting, Watson asserted that “we don’t need to pay a bureaucracy in town” and “we don’t need to pay somebody to run it.”

Medford Deputy Mayor Frank Czekay said the

purpose of the legislation is for towns that “don’t have separate systems” like Medford has.

“We are perfectly fine in terms of the funding we have,” Czekay said. “There is no reason for us to institute any kind of stormwater utility to manage the stormwater. It is managed. It is fine. It is able to be absorbed through our general operating budget, which is where it should be.”

Shamong Mayor Michael Di Croce said Shamong also already has systems in place to treat stormwater that are funded through property taxes.

“We have no intentions on creating a new level of bureaucracy and hitting our residents with a new tax,” Di Croce said. “The township plans on passing Assemblyman Peters’ resolution and stands beside him in his fight to provide relief to our taxpayers.”

However, Evesham Township, which is part of Peters’ district, recently was the site of a free forum, sponsored by the New Jersey League of Conservation Voters (NJ LCV), which provides a statewide political voice for the environment, in conjunction with the Pinelands Preservation Alliance as part of an ongoing plan to educate the public about the human cost of stormwater to people’s health.

As this newspaper previously reported, Evesham Township Mayor Jaclyn Veasy, who attended the forum, told attendees that she had directed Evesham Township Manager Michael Barth to reach out to the school district and the fire department in her municipality to come up with ways their facilities can be retrofitted for better stormwater management.

She added that the municipality was in the process of building a rain garden at a township preschool to help with stormwater management. She noted that the township was also building a miniature golf course at Indian Springs that has been completely redesigned to provide fully functioning stormwater management.

“With what we are already doing in Evesham, it is really not on our radar right now to implement any type of tax,” she said when interviewed by this newspaper after the forum. “We want people to holistically add stormwater management, to do it from the ground up and to encourage them to use all the programs that we are implementing now. For our commercial businesses, the law encourages them to set up new landscaping or they would end up having to pay some kind of utility fee for stormwater. They are not required to do so now, although we do encourage it with all the new regulations for any new developments coming.”

NJ LCV Executive Director Ed Potosnak told forum attendees that stormwater “is the stuff that happens when we have rain events and water doesn’t have a chance to go through the ground as a natural filter,” and that it “enters waterways and doesn’t have a chance to get treated.” He claimed managing runoff was important because of the effects it can have on drinking water, beaches, rivers and swimming.

“We see it in flooding on our roadways and our basements,” he said.

Typical symptoms include leg muscle pain and cramping when walking. However, these occur in only about one-third of patients with PAD. One third will have atypical symptoms such as heaviness in the legs or easy fatigability.

The rest, particularly diabetics, will have no symptoms at all.

Lexus Crashes Into Dump Truck, Causing Fire, Closing Roadway SHAMONG—A Peterbuilt dump truck and a Lexus both caught fire last week after being involved in a collision on Tuckerton Road in Shamong Township.

The crash, according to New Jersey State Police Spokesman Lt. Ted Schafer, occurred around 7:08 a.m. on April 2.

Indian Mills Volunteer Fire Company Chief John Smith told the Pine Barrens Tribune that the dump truck was getting ready to back into the driveway when it was struck by the Lexus.

“It was getting ready to back into a job site where a septic system was being repaired,” Smith said.

He added that while firefighters were able to quickly “knock the fire down,” part of the dump truck’s body had melted by the time the flames were extinguished.

Schafer said the driver of the Lexus, Kylie Heins, 18, of Shamong, and the dump truck operator, Martin DiBouno, 67, of South Toms River, had sustained minor injuries in the collision. He added that both individuals refused to be transported to the hospital.

Smith said Heins was on her way to high school when she struck the dump truck.

A Lexus collided with a Peterbuilt dump truck on April 2 in Shamong Township, causing a fire in which part of the body of the 10-wheeler melted.

Schafer said the impact of the collision caused to the fire.

Schafer added that Tuckerton Road was closed for approximately one hour due to the mishap.

“Both vehicles were towed from the scene,” he said.

Blaze Destroys Storage Shed and Numerous Vehicles

EVESHAM—A storage shed along with numerous vehicles caught fire in the area of Yorkshire Court, near the 200 block of Chestnut Avenue, around 4:30 a.m. on April 1 in Evesham Township.

“The shed was destroyed, along with all-terrain vehicles, a motorcycle and a truck,” said Fire Chief Carl Bittenbender, of Evesham Fire-Rescue.

Bittenbender added that crews extinguished the fire and placed the incident under control within about 15 minutes.

No injuries were reported. Bittenbender said that the Evesham Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

Fire First Seen on Porch Spreads to Upper Floors of Evesham Twp. Home

EVESHAM—Visible smoke observed in the sky from Evesham Fire-Rescue’s Main Street station, and a report of a porch on fire, led firefighters to respond to a residence in the unit block of North Locust Avenue on April 1.

“The fire at the residence was well-advanced upon arrival of the fire department, and the fire had spread into its attic,” said Fire Chief Carl Bittenbender. “Crews made an aggressive attack, but were forced to retreat and use heavy water lines to gain control of the fire.”

The fire chief added that the blaze, which began around 12:15 p.m., was placed under control about 45 minutes later.

No injuries were reported, but Bittenbender said the home was destroyed. Photographs taken during the fire show large flames shooting out of the second floor and attic of the dwelling.

The Evesham Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, according to Bittenbender, who added Wednesday that the structure was a sober living home.

“All of its residents have found other housing,” he said.

Bittenbender, when asked if the fire was suspicious, reiterated that the blaze “remains under investigation.”

“They have not yet determined a cause,” he said.

MEDFORD LAKES—Not just ordinary graffiti, but a lewd drawing was discovered on the borough’s footbridge on the morning of April 6.

In that instance, the most concern was shown by a concern—Revive Painting & Power Washing of neighboring Medford Township, which, according to Borough Administrator Dr. Robert Burton, immediately set about using its resources to completely eradicate the offending image.

“That was nice,” Burton said. “I would think if I had my guys out there (to clean it up), it would have cost hundreds of dollars.”

But instead, he pointed out, a public-spirited enterprise “stepped up and got it cleaned off, and hopefully it won’t happen again.”

Medford Lakes Police were investigating the incident, which was the latest in a series of criminal mischief complaints in the area in regard to graffiti, and encouraged residents with any information to contact them.

PEMBERTON—A 28-year-old motorist was reported in critical condition Wednesday from injuries sustained in a collision with a tree off Route 70 in Pemberton Township on the morning of April 6.

Joseph D. Reagoso III, of the Browns Mills section of Pemberton Township, was admitted to Helene Fuld Medical Center (Capital Health) in Trenton, a level 2 trauma center, following the mishap, according to a spokesperson for the hospital.

Fire Damages Home in Medford Lakes MEDFORD LAKES—A fire discovered by a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier heavily damaged a house on Pequot Trail and closed nearby roads for several hours on the afternoon of April 4.

However, the quick response of the Medford Lakes Fire Department, with backup from neighboring departments, was credited by Medford Lakes Borough Administrator Dr. Robert Burton with having saved most of the log cabin home.

When officers from the Medford Lakes Police Department arrived at the scene shortly after 4 p.m., they found heavy smoke emanating from the roof and attic area of the structure, which was unoccupied at the time, according to Lt. John G. McGinnis, Jr. No injuries were reported.

According to the report, Reagoso was ejected from the vehicle and sustained “multiple serious injuries.” Police at the scene determined that he had not been wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, the report said.

The collision was reported to be under investigation, and no summonses had yet been issued, according to Lt. Brian Smith of the Pemberton Township Police Department.

Yet, many Democrat leaders refuse to admit the obvious. After two years of accusing President Donald J. Trump of treason and “colluding” with Russia, neither Trump, nor his campaign engaged in such activities.

Let’s say it again for those incapable of understanding: neither Trump nor his campaign engaged in treason.

After almost two years of investigation,

I am sure there will be embarrassing things for Trump and others in the Mueller Report, almost by definition. That is why prosecutors don’t release information unless they charge someone with a crime.

It is not fair.

So, this is not a legal, but a political issue. It serves the Democrat need of attempting to politically weaken Trump.

They used these phony charges to attempt to derail Trump’s election and afterwards, as insurance, to distract the Trump Administration from governing for two years.

Pemberton’s 2019 ‘Senior Prom’ Proves a Mutually Enriching Experience

PEMBERTON—While “Island Breezes” was the theme of the 11th Annual “Senior Prom” held at the banquet hall of St. Ann’s Church in Browns Mills on April 3, what this event really did was to get both young people and those two or three generations removed from them to leave their age-related islands, intermingle and learn to appreciate each other more.

The result was a mutually rewarding one, with the older members of the community having the opportunity to absorb some of the energy and idealism of the Pemberton Township High School students who set up the event, and the latter, in turn, getting the benefit of the wisdom, experience and historical knowledge of the local seniors for whom it has become an annual form of recreation and recognition.

Both the Pemberton Township Education Association (PTEA) and the Pemberton Senior Citizen Council spent the better part of a year preparing for this event, beginning back in May 2018 when the seniors began brainstorming what the 2019 theme should be. Once “Island Breezes” became the agreed-on choice, Carol Smith, craft coordinator for the Pemberton Township Senior Center, and her team, began constructing more than two dozen centerpieces for the tables, each depicting a special island.

The Nantucket centerpiece, for example, featured a lighthouse and a small pine tree, while those representing tropical islands sported sheltering palms. Some included sailboats and pods of dolphins, and one was even covered with lizards and other crawling creatures. These unique and imaginative creations were among the door prizes awarded at the event.

One much-admired door prize designed

by Smith, a lawn ornament that included pel ica ns a nd a cit ronel la ca nd le, was auctioned off. The proceeds will provide a substantial down payment on the annual Medical Arts Jane White Scholarship to be presented by the senior citizens to a deserving high school student.

The rest of the décor, which the more than 30 participating students contributed their efforts to as well, included travel posters, nautical displays, multicolored table coverings and helium-filled balloons that floated throughout

the room and were attached to every chair.

It all made for an extremely festive setting that greeted the 110 local seniors who began arriving at about 3 p.m.

Adding to the ambience was the music provided by DJ Ted Steinmetz, whose selections were well chosen to keep the participants on their feet and dancing. Dorothy Schemelia, a descendent of native Hawaiians, performed a hula to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

The 93-year-old Willie Holmes proved that age is just a number by dancing most of the night away, with moves that included a twist, in which he nearly touched the floor and then arose in perfect rhythm.

Councilman Donovan Gardner was again present, as he has been during previous proms, to take photos of all the participating seniors, which they could keep as souvenirs of the occasion or give as special gifts to family members.

Other attendees included Pember ton Mayor David Patriarca, Superintendent Tony Trongone, and PTEA President Kathy Vogel.

Among the high-school students present were members of Ladies of Character and K nowledge ( LOCK), Fut u re Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and We Help You (WHY), who served as wait staff for a dinner that included a choice of beef, chicken, or vegetarian, prepared by Colonial Village Caterers of Pemberton Borough. The PTHS Culinary Arts program provided a beautifully decorated sheet cake and decadent brownies for dessert. Attendees also received corsages that were the handiwork of horticultural students.

LOCK is a relatively new student organization at the high school, whose purpose is to mentor female students in grades 9 through 12 in the areas of educational goal setting, relationships, values and self-worth under the guidance of caring adult women.

The final act of the evening was when the students choose the prom king and queen, with this year’s honors going to Carmen Facciolini and Rosa Jackson, both of whom were attired in colorful tropical outfits. The king’s “court” consisted of Holmes, Ray Rinaldi, Freddie Elmore and Alex Baptiste, while the queen’s included ChiYoko Jones, Carol Smith, YiYup Riddick, and Leigh Kush.

Faculty members Terri Sharp and Alice Dracopolas provided supervision of the

students from the set-up process through the final cleanup, with some Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts arriving near the end of the evening to assist in the latter effort.

The 2019 Senior Prom fulfilled the PTEA’s goal of bringing the students and senior

citizens into close interaction, with both groups mingling and dancing with each other in a tradition of intergenerational sharing that has no age barriers, and has come to reflect what a community can do to enrich the lives of all its residents.

Does Whitening Your Teeth Cause Long-Term Damage?

When I was a young lad in dental school, I had the opportunity to whiten my teeth in front of one Dr. Richard of those large Weber lights—the kind that look like you’re putting your mouth in a tanning bed.

While I knew sensitivity was possible, I was surprised by the number of “zingers” that I felt.

It led me to ask a common question; “Can whitening my teeth cause long-term damage to them?”

I was very suspicious, so I dove into the literature on whitening teeth.

To my surprise (and relief), my research showed no long-term negative consequences!

As it turns out, the sensitivity that can be felt (about 50 percent of people who whiten their teeth experience sensitivity) is truly just a temporary sensation. The feeling is similar to the sensation you get if you sink your teeth into some ice cream (not fun, but not lasting).

The active ingredient, either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, penetrates into the enamel and is only active for about an hour or two. After that, the whitening magic is done.

From the current research that is available, there are no long-term negative side effects of whitening your teeth.

There are some limitations; however. Existing fillings, veneers, crowns (caps), denture teeth, etc. do not whiten with the bleaching agents. Dentistry also recommends that young children and pregnant women should not whiten their teeth. If you have gum disease or active cavities, you should have these issues resolved first. Finally, if the bleaching material gets on your gums and stays there, it can cause irritation of your gums.

While there are many whitening solutions, it is best to talk with your dentist and have your teeth evaluated before choosing any.

Natural Remedies for Reflux and Esophagitis I finally got acid reflux and heartburn after all of these years. I have newfound respect for those of you who deal with it!

I traced my problem to shots of yerba mate, which I have been drinking several times a week for energy. I began experiencing heartburn and belching about 20 minutes after drinking one tiny glass bottle of yerba mate.

I experienced acid reflux and heartburn three more times last week after drinking yerba mate and then I made the connection. x Shortly thereafter, I did a little research and apparently drinking too much yerba mate, especially when it is hot, is tied to esophageal cancer. I have since stopped drinking yerba mate shots as a result of my discomfort, as well as due to the research.

I didn’t take famotidine (H2 antagonists) or omeprazole (Prilosec, a popular PPI med) to treat my acid reflux and heartburn. Instead, I started taking natural remedies and my strategy worked!

Just one week later, I have experienced a complete turnaround.

I’m 75 percent better.

Here is the short story of my strategy.

Discontinue the Offender: For me, yerba mate was the problem.

Sometimes it is smoking, spicy foods, alcohol or hot drinks. Whatever it is, discontinue your trigger.

Discontinue Spices and Hot Foods: I have temporarily given up spicy mayo, cayenne and black pepper and even vinegar to give my esophagus a rest. Also, I noticed if I drink hot coffee or tea, my throat and stomach would hurt. According to the research article published in International Journal of Cancer, drinking hot tea dramatically increases your chance for developing esophageal cancer. So, drink your beverages lukewarm.

Drink Marshmallow Root Water: I put about one tablespoon of dried marshmallow root (per cup of water) in a big glass jar, with cold water. In a few hours, you have a water that is somewhat thicker,

preserving the mucilaginous properties of the marshmallow, which coats and soothes delicate membranes as you drink it.

Mastic Gum: Mastic Gum is a resin that is extracted from a tree. This is sold as a dietary supplement and it is used as a natural remedy for many intestinal problems including indigestion, acid reflux, inflammatory bowel disease, gastritis and ulcers.

Zinc Carnosine: This is a dietary supplement that chemically ties together a zinc molecule to a carnosine molecule. The tissue-healing effects come from both compounds, which allow for tissue repair and a reduction in intestinal inflammation.

oloring Easter eggs is a time-honored tradition passed down from generation to generation.

Easter eggs symbolize rebirth, which fits in well with both religious and seasonal celebrations.

While there are many kits on the market that enable people to easily color eggs, there also are plenty of all-natural foodstuffs, like fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices, that can get the job done just as effectively. For those who plan to eat the eggs afterward, natural dyes may be preferable to dyes from kits.

Below are a few tried and true methods for producing brilliantly hued eggs with items from the kitchen, courtesy of The Spruce and Martha Stewart.

Happy yellows

Give chicken eggs a beautiful robin egg shade with red cabbage. Simply shred one cup of red cabbage into a pot. Bring the cabbage and roughly 4 cups water and 1 tablespoon salt to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Let the broth cool.

Strain out the cabbage and stir in 2 tablespoons of distilled white vinegar. Let the eggs sit in the dye for the desired duration to achieve light to dark blue eggs.

Cast a sunny glow on eggs with a common household spice and some tasty carrots. Turmeric is touted for its anti-inflammatory benefits, but it also makes a great dye. Bring 1 tablespoon of turmeric, 3 to 4 sliced carrots, 1 tablespoon salt, and 4 cups of water to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Let cool, strain and stir in 2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar. Use the dye for a lovely yellow shade.

Here’s the lowdown on some of our longheld Easter customs.

EASTER EGGS Eggs have long been a symbol of rebirth, and decorating and exchanging them in the spring is a practice that goes back many thousands of years. Early Christians adopted this custom and eventually began exchanging empty eggs to represent Christ’s tomb after the resurrection. Overall, Lent is a time for fasting, giving up bad habits, adopting wholesome practices and reflecting on spiritual values.

Regardless of whether or not you’re religious, the days leading up to Easter are the perfect time to be more mindful of how you live your life.

ASH WEDNESDAY • MARCH 6, 2019 The first day of Lent. This holy day is characterized by the practice of marking crucifixes with the ashes of burnt palm leaves on the foreheads of devout Christians.

PALM SUNDAY • APRIL 14, 2019 The final Sunday of Lent and the first day of Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter Sunday), this day commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ into Jerusalem, when followers laid down their cloaks and small branches of trees in front of him as a sign of respect.

HOLY THURSDAY • APRIL 18, 2019 Also known as Maundy Thursday, this is the celebration of the last supper of Jesus and his apostles, when he predicted his death and resurrection.

Easter is considered a moveable feast because the day it falls on can be anywhere from March 22 to April 25. The difference from year to year can be attributed to variances in the lunar calendar. Easter will always land on the Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox. If the full moon happens to be on a Sunday, then Easter is celebrated the following week.

Refreshing quinoa and vegetable salad As a side dish or main, this • ½ cucumber, diced delicious salad is sure to satisfy • ½ red onion, diced your health-conscious guests.

• 1 cup cherry tomatoes, quartered • 10 basil leaves, finely chopped Start to finish: 1.5 hours • 10 chives, finely chopped (30 minutes active) • A few basil leaves for garnishes Servings: 6 • Salt and pepper to taste INGREDIENTS DRESSING SALAD • ½ cup olive oil • 1 cup white quinoa • ¼ cup lemon juice • 2 tablespoons olive oil • ¼ cup white wine vinegar • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth • 1 teaspoon honey • 1 cup water • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 yellow pepper, diced

DIRECTIONS 1. Rinse quinoa until water runs clear.

2.

In a saucepan, bring broth and water to a boil and add quinoa.

Reduce heat, then cover the saucepan and let simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit for 10 minutes before fluffing with a fork. Spread quinoa onto a plate or cookie sheet and cool in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

In a small bowl, mix all the ingredients for the dressing.

4.

In a large bowl, combine cold

quinoa and other salad ingredients (except the basil leaves for garnishes).

5. Add dressing and mix well. Garnish with basil leaves.

This recipe calls for white quinoa, but don’t hesitate to use red, black or tri-coloured varieties.

This delicious quiche is perfect to serve to a crowd at an Easter brunch or potluck.

3. Remove dough, shape into a ball and cover with plastic wrap.

Refrigerate for 2 to 24 hours.

Start to finish: 4 hours (30 minutes active) Servings: 6

4. Preheat the oven to 400 ºF 200 ºC).

INGREDIENTS CRUST • 1-½ cups all-purpose flour • ½ tablespoon salt • ½ tablespoon baking powder • ½ cup cold, unsalted butter, cubed • 1 egg, beaten • 5 teaspoons ice water FILLING • 2 French shallots, finely chopped • 8 oz. thick cut bacon or ham, cubed • 3 eggs • ¾ cup half and half • ¼ cup 2% milk • Salt and pepper to taste • 1-½ cups gruyere cheese, grated DIRECTIONS FOR CRUST 1. In a food processor, combine the flour, salt and baking powder.

Add cubes of butter and mix until pea-sized chunks are formed.

2. Add the egg and water. Mix again until dough begins to form. Add more water if necessary.

5. On a floured surface, roll the dough to about 5 mm thick and carefully place into a 23centimetre (9-inch) pie pan.

Lightly press on the bottom and sides so the dough takes the form of the pan. Remove excess dough and create waves around the edge with your fingers. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

6. Remove from refrigerator and prick holes on the bottom with a fork. Cover with parchment paper and place pie weights on top (a heavy plate works too).

Bake on the lowest rack for 25 minutes, or until crust is slightly golden. Remove from oven and set aside.

7. Reduce oven temperature to 325 ºF (160 ºC).

DIRECTIONS FOR QUICHE 8. In a pan, sauté the French shallots and bacon or ham until golden.

Set aside.

9. In a bowl, whisk the eggs, cream, milk, salt and pepper. Add French shallots, bacon and grated cheese.

Carefully pour mixture into crust.

10. Bake on the middle rack for 40 minutes or until firm.

Let cool 15 to 20 minutes before serving.

Crunchy peanut butter and chocolate truffles With a surprisingly crunchy texture and a rich chocolate coating, this dessert is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Start to finish: 2.5 hours (30 minutes active) Servings: 24 INGREDIENTS • 1 cup creamy peanut butter • 2 cups puffed rice cereal • ½ cup unsalted grilled peanuts • ½ cup pretzel sticks • 1-½ cups semi-sweet chocolate, melted

DIRECTIONS 1. In a bowl, mix the peanut butter and cereal until fully combined.

2. Using about 1 tablespoon of the mixture, form into balls with your hands. Put them on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. Freeze for 30 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, place the peanuts and pretzel sticks in a plastic freezer bag. Crush with a rolling pin until reduced to a coarse powder. Put mixture in a shallow bowl and set aside.

4. R emove the peanut butter balls from the freezer, and dip them in the melted chocolate so they’re completely covered.

Put them back on the cookie sheet.

5. W ait until the chocolate has partially hardened, about 30 minutes, then roll each ball in the peanut and pretzel mixture.

Put them back on the cookie sheet and refrigerate about one hour or until they’ve hardened.

6. Enjoy!

(Continued from Page 5) 2017 to only $431,000 in the past year; • 3 percent increase in car crashes, totaling 1,800; • 20 percent increase in police records activities, totaling 21,492, which involve the fielding OPRA (Open Public Records Act) requests and discovery requests from attorneys, by civilian staff members, etc., and • 12 percent decrease in DWI arrests.

“We’re working hard to keep those who are intoxicated off the streets and we are proud of our efforts,” said Chew, who added that there have been no DWI fatalities in town in the last eight years.

Finally, the chief reviewed his department’s goals and objectives for 2019, which include the creation of a 360-Degree Wellness Committee.

“Thankfully, the township council allocated funds to take care of our staff,” he said. “Our committee’s job is to expand our wellness program to provide financial assistance and allow families to come in to talk to our police psychologists, in addition to our increasing the number of free visits from one to three for our officers to see a psychologist. Our goal is to help our officers work through stress.”

Other goals and objectives for the department this year includes scheduling a full-scale active shooter training at Cherokee High School that includes New Jersey State Police, the fire department and surrounding towns.

“We take a lot of pride in your success, which obviously translates to the town’s success,” said Councilman Kenneth D’Andrea after Chew’s presentation concluded. “You have always been, with your leadership, the standard bearer for all police departments in the state. The CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) certification shows that (Evesham Township Police) is in the top 1 percent of all police departments in the country. The return on investment for us has been phenomenal.”

Also taking place during the meeting was the presentation of ceremonial oaths given by Mayor Jaclyn Veasy to Cherokee High School juniors Alexander Selnek and Spencer Floyd, in honor of their being promoted to leadership positions in the Evesham Police Department’s Police Explorers program.

Selnek was promoted to lieutenant and Floyd to sergeant in their third year of participation in the program, in which 14 to 20-year-old students are mentored and coached by police officers.

“They become part of our police department,” said Chew, who also mentioned that for the first time, a former Police Explorer was recently hired by Evesham Police. “As much as we are teaching the young adults, they’re teaching us how to be better police officers.”

In other meeting business, the council approved an ordinance on second reading, 4-1, providing for various capital improvements and related expenses appropriating $5,250,000 and authorizing the issuance of $4,999,600 in general improvement bonds.

Republican Councilman Robert DiEnna cast the dissenting vote, after a request he made for council to table the ordinance failed.

“I wanted to request that council receive agenda information and all related documents by the end of

WWW.PINEBARRENSTRIBUNE.COM business Thursday before the council meeting and also to have that exact information to the public before close of business Friday,” DiEnna said. “I’ve had multiple questions about why folks can’t access that information in a timely fashion so that they can work on making some comments.”

Veasy replied that the clerk’s department has been short staffed. Later, during the staff and council comment portion, Township Clerk Mary Lou Bergh also had something to say on the matter.

“We do everything possible to get the agenda out by 4:30 Friday,” said Bergh, noting that she is one of two people currently working in the clerk’s department.

“Our council and township manager (Michael Barth) have been very good about understanding what we have been going through over the past month. We do the best we can. Sometimes we get changes at the last minute on Friday and have to hold up the agenda. Plus, we do many other things.”

Notable in the bond ordinance was the acquisition of vehicular equipment, with an estimated cost of $900,000 over five years; improvements to township facilities (including Gibson House Community Center repairs) at an estimated cost of $505,000 over 15 years, and improvements to various township streets and roads for an estimated cost of $3,000,000 over 20 years.

During public comment, resident Anthony Quitigua contended that there are expenses in this bond that should be budgeted for instead of financing through a long-term debt.

“I question paying for Gibson House repairs through bond, spending $330,000 for technology equipment purchases, and spending nearly $1 million for vehicle costs for only five years of use,” he said.

Director of Finance and Deputy Township Manager Tom Shanahan replied that each type of improvement mentioned in the bond has a service life.

“With vehicles, it has a maximum service life of five years and in reality, our Public Works Department keeps its vehicles on the road for sometimes 20 years,” he said. “The length of the bond is only authorized for five years. There are weighted service lives for other categories such as 20 years for roads, five years for vehicles and so on.”

D’Andrea defended the bond process.

“From my experience, everything in this bond is done the appropriate way,” he said. “IT (technology) costs, for example, have always been capitalized. I will be voting for this bond. We haven’t changed the process.”

He went on to praise Shanahan as being “probably the best CFO in the state” and for consistently getting the township an incredible bond rating.

“When we came into the township at the beginning of January, I approached Tom and said that I wanted to keep a conservative, fiscal capital budget,” Veasy said. “This will help our township take care of what our needs are. This bond ordinance is following a process that has gone on for many years, and I’m very happy with this capital budget.”

Council also passed resolutions, including approval of a massage therapy establishments at Suede Salon (500 Route 73 South), Health Goals Chiropractic Center (230 N. Maple Ave., Suite G2), Toppers (945 Route 73 South) and Halo Wellness Center (986 Route 73 South).

The zoning officer added that the second proposed amendment she was recommending council approve was suggested to her while “just going through” the vehicle chapter of the code due to “some situations where there is inoperable and abandoned vehicles on properties.”

Cu r rent code def ines a n inoperable vehicle as one that is unregistered, or any vehicle, whether registered or not, that is in an inoperable condition or unfit for use on any public highway, standing or located on any property. Such vehicles are considered unlawful if they are not stored in an enclosed garage, barn or other building and must be removed within 30 days of written notice by the township.

The proposed amendment, if approved, would require that inoperable vehicles stored outside must be removed much more quickly, within 5 days of written notice. It would keep the same definition of an inoperable vehicle, but exempts vehicles that are in the process of being restored. Vehicles under restoration, however, would have to be covered at all times if stored in a front yard or driveway.

T here is a lso some la nguage in t he proposed amendment that would strengthen the municipality’s powers when it finds an inoperable vehicle on a roadway.

“This is to tighten up our abandoned vehicle code,” said Mayor Charles “Chuck” Watson. “We have a lot of people with unregistered vehicles and want to make sure we have the exception of someone restoring a vehicle for the time being.”

Po r t o c a l i s t old c o u n c i l t h a t s o m e inoperable vehicles are parked in Medford Village, the downtown part of Medford where there is primarily on-street parking, “for extended periods of time.”

“The vehicles’ registrations have expired,” she said. “We have been working with the police chief. We don’t necessarily want to take them, but we want to see them get fixed and registered.”

Council unanimously introduced the two proposed amendments to existing code through two ordinances, which are both scheduled to have a second reading and public hearing on April 16 at 7 p.m.

The intent to create a law prohibiting the storage of commercial vehicles, however, was not discussed during the latest council meeting. Watson, at council’s March 19 meeting, said he did not want to introduce the law yet as he still had “some things” he wanted to look into.

His comments followed the March 5 council meeting in which the governing body heard from three residents who claimed such a law would have a detrimental impact on their livelihoods. Portocalis, during that same meeting, said a New Jersey Motor Vehicles Commission representative recommended that a commercial vehicle classification be 10,000 pounds, or two axles be allowable so that pickup trucks, box trucks, and vehicles for plumbers and electricians should be exempt from any law, but “the oversized vehicles that we are dealing with would not meet this classification.”

“I own a dump truck, one of the commercial vehicles you don’t like,” said resident Sean Holmes to council. “If I have to go offsite, I might be looking at $600-$700 a month just in storage fees. I can’t afford that.”

He also told council that he intentionally did not a buy a home in a residential community, where homes are close together, so that his operation could fit in without disturbing neighbors. He added that his driveway is 300 feet long.

“This ordinance can shut me down,” Holmes said. “It is a big deal. Owners and operators don’t make a ton of money. We

Saturday, April 13, 2019 make enough money to survive and buy a house in communities that we think we can fit in with. All of us don’t buy a house inside a tight development. This would be detrimental to me and my family.”

Holmes, who said he lives on Church Road, also questioned the definition of residential area in the municipal zoning laws, particularly given that some homes are in close proximity to prominent businesses.

“The zoning is a little weird where I am at,” he said. “They just built a new Dunkin Donuts 100 yards away from my house, but I won’t be able to have a dump truck.”

Scott Buchler, who was joined by his wife, Linda, revealed in a back-and-forth discussion with Township Solicitor Timothy Prime that he was the resident that Portocalis described as being taken to court by the township. Buchler, after describing to council that he purchased his property 25 years ago “with contingencies on the fact” that he “occasionally needs to park a company vehicle at the residence,” was asked by Watson to describe what commercial vehicle he drives.

“It is a crane!” Prime said.

Watson, before the March 5 meeting’s public comment period, contended that storing an 80,000-pound crane on residential property shouldn’t be allowed.

Buchler pushed back on the notion that he was parking a crane on his property.

“It is not a crane!” he said. “It is a commercial vehicle. It is a Sterling, threeaxle vehicle and weighs about 60,000 pounds.

There is a crane on top of it. It is carried by a commercial vehicle.”

Buchler pointed to the current code which permits one commercial vehicle to be stored on residential property. He said that when he initially moved to Medford, he met with then-township zoning officials over lunch and that is when it was revealed to him that municipal law permitted residents to store one commercial vehicle on their property.

“One of them joked, ‘Not many people k now this, but anyone in Medford can park one tractor-trailer at their residence.’”

Buchler said.

Buchler described how after his luncheon with the zoning officials to discuss his commercial vehicle, one of them followed him to his home to see if he would be willing to do work on behalf of the municipality. He said he subsequently performed the work.

“Our question to the council is: how would these changes to the existing ordinance, if passed, affect the property Linda and I have owned for the past 25 years?” Buchler asked council.

Watson did not answer the question, but promised to take Buchler’s concerns into consideration. Buchler, however, demanded an answer to his question.

“You wouldn’t be able to park it,” Prime said. “That is how it would affect you.”

Buchler replied that he would have to sell his residence.

“First of all, this is not court,” Prime said.

“I have to be careful with what we (he and council) say. Nobody is saying you have to sell anything. The council is considering amendments to ordinances; we will consider what to do about it.”

Prime added that the township would have to “analyze” the implications of such a law.

Watson said during the March 19 council meeting that one of his concer ns with introducing the proposed law, officially, in its current state is that there are “pickup trucks that can be registered for 12,000 pounds or more.”

Councilman Bradley Denn replied that different zones in the town should “maybe” have different commercial-vehicle storageweight limits.

“My dump truck is my livelihood,” Holmes said. “If that truck gets put somewhere else, you will have another foreclosed home in Medford.”

Let’s Hear It for Junk Mail, Robocalls

A few years back, I wrote a column about junk mail and how I despised it.

It was not long before I received an email from a reader who curtly “how dared me.”

Junk mail was how she made her living and she criticized the audacity I had to publicly proclaim how annoying it was.

She then went on to say that I was a bad writer and the correct “vernacilar” is third-class mail.

I contemplated emailing her back and saying that if you are going to use a word like “vernacular” to make a point with someone who is a writer, make sure it is spelled correctly.

But I am a good person, so I simply replied with, “Thank you for taking the time to write me.”

That being said, I am about to vent on yet another subject, and I sincerely hope the people who do this for a living contact me about it.

Robocalls!

Those annoying calls that you get from a local number so it tricks you into answering with a kind hello, only to be met with, “Do not hang up the phone! This is an important message! Your Google listing may be in jeopardy!”

Is your blood boiling right now; because mine sure is.

A couple of months ago, we (my family) received a voicemail from the “IRS” telling us that we were fraudulent, that we needed to contact them immediately and “Oh boy! You’re in a lot of trouble.” The person who left the message then further advised that if we didn’t heed their warning, things would turn ugly.

Then the computer voice went sinister and dropped an octave (yes, they can do that) and to the tune of an evil villain said, “Good luck.”

I sent that recording to our accountant and cousin, who is a lawyer, and we all laughed it up.

I then sent the recording to my friend, Karen, who likes to mess with these robo-callers. She called them back several times a day and either blew a whistle in their ear, or asked them what they were wearing.

Some folks suggest that we simply don’t answer calls from people who are not in our contacts. But when you have a business, that just is not possible.

Besides, these robo-callers are getting tricky and now have access to our contacts. In fact, last week I received a robocall from a family friend who had passed away three years ago, asking me if I needed life insurance.

Will they stop at nothing?!

I have blocked hundreds of numbers to no avail. I listened to the message that told me that if I didn’t press “3,” my account would be charged $390 (it didn’t mention which account it was referring to).

I chuckled my way through the message that said my computer had a virus and I needed to press “1” to see if there was any way we could fix it.

It is just something else to deal with in our day-to-day activities. In fact, I took it all in stride until last week when I went to check our voicemail on our landline phone and found we had 19 messages.

Wowsers!

That is enough to give you a scare. Then I found out that 17 of them were from the same number, with the same ominous voice that had previously wished us, “Good luck,” with our IRS woes.

We weren’t about to be arrested this time, and they weren’t going to come and take our cars, but our Apple ID had been compromised and the only way to fix it was to press “1” now and talk to their helpful representative.

They called and left four messages the next day and, quite happily, I happened to be at arm’s length of the phone when they called later that afternoon.

I gave that poor man the “what for!” I demanded that he take me off of the list, told him that he was disrupting our lives, asked him how many people fall for his scam, and told him that he could work half as hard to make an honest living.

Although I did not realize it at the time, I am pretty sure he hung up on me shortly after my curt, “Yes you can help me!”

Perhaps I should just have asked him what he was wearing.

swimming docks and a giant American flag was flown by the borough’s fire department.

The ceremony began and concluded with the playing of bagpipes.

DiMona, who had been assigned to the Army’s 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and died after being medevacked to a hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska, enlisted in 2017 and had been stationed in Anchorage for the past year.

He followed in the footsteps of his late father, Chief Warrant Officer Nicholas DiMona II, who in a sad irony was also killed during training 15 years ago when his Apache helicopter crashed during a night exercise in Georgia.

He is survived by his mother Melissa and younger sister Gianna, who chose not to address the gathering, although his girlfriend Hailey Wilmot, her sister Jessica Wilmot and one of his closest friends, Alex Feighery, did.

“I would like to thank the Colony Club for putting this on, especially in this in-between period until Nick gets home,” said Feighery, who graduated from Shawnee with DiMona and worked with him at Medford’s YMCA in the Pines (formerly Camp Ockanickon). He credited DiMona with cultivating his own interest in the Army.

“Nick was high speed, proficient in skills, and really took the warrior ethos and Army values to heart. From the moment I really got to know Nick, it was apparent that he would be an airborne infantryman. He did it, and I know his dad was really proud of him.”

Feighery described his friend as “raw and honest.”

“That is what I loved most about him,” he said. “We had our ups and downs, but Nick was family to me. He was my friend, he was my wingman and he was my brother. We were dumb teenagers together. We bailed each other out of stupid things. We always made an effort to see each other when he was home on leave, or I was home from school. I am going to miss him all my life, but we’ll be brothers forever.”

Jessica Wilmot paid tribute to DiMona by reading a sentiment from a poem she had written: “I’ve known you for quite some time and even though you’re away, I still remember fondly our car rides we would take when we drove to places with my sister Hailey. As I see it, the road hasn’t ended, but continues to a new path out of my reach. I’m thankful to have been in your life. I carry my memories of you from now on.”

Her sister Hailey Wilmot, was the last of the ceremony’s three main speakers.

“We’re all here because somewhere, somehow, we have all been touched by Nick,” she said. “I loved a man who made Play-Doh into an infinity symbol while telling me we are infinite in his eyes.”

She described their relationship as that of lifelong friends who would “fight like brother and sister” and loved each other as deeply as a husband and wife.

“I loved how confident he was when he asked me to junior prom by playing the game hangman,” she recalled. “He showed me how to take risks and enjoy what I have, instead of worrying about what I need. I realize now, I had everything I was looking for in a best friend and it was you, Nicholas. I learned more about myself through our friendship than a reflection of myself in a mirror. I love you Nicholas. You will forever be loved by my family and me.”

Besides his ties to Medford Lakes, his family, friends and the U.S. Army, DiMona was a longtime member of the YMCA of the Pines – first as a camper, then later as a junior counselor, counselor and lifeguard. His sister has also been both a camper and counselor and his mother has worked there as a member of the camp’s year-round staff for about 10 years.

Prior to the ceremony, Suzette Belz, the camp’s vice president of development and major gifts, described DiMona as being “part of our family.”

“He was adored by so many and he’s going to be part of us forever,” she said.

Belz, who last saw DiMona over the summer, noted that despite his being in the Army, he would still come back to volunteer at camp whenever he was home.

“He always wanted to be back at camp,” she recalled. “He was an amazing role model. He was actually the counselor for my daughter in our after-school program, and she adored him.

He always made sure all the kids were included and having a good time.

“Our campers are mourning, our staff is mourning,” Belz added. “There is a big space being left.”

Another camp employee, housekeeper Jim Gilday, in referring to the ceremony at the beach, said, he believed that a church service for DiMona would likely have even greater attendance.

“That is the impact that Nick had on everyone’s life,” Gilday said. “He was very outgoing. He espoused every camp value— honesty, respect, courtesy, forward thinking, inclusion of all children and everyone he worked

with. He was always able to be counted on at all times. He was a real soldier.”

Despite the short timeframe they had to do it, staging Sunday’s event was a labor of love for many in the small community.

“It was a large group of individuals who came together very quickly, and this isn’t the first time,” said Brent Blanchard, former president of the Colony Club. “It just speaks to the character of the town and it is not surprising at all. So many people volunteered that we didn’t have enough things for everyone to do. But we gave everyone little pieces, and they all responded as your neighbors would.”

Blanchard added that the vigil’s organizers tried to be particularly sensitive to the feelings of DiMona’s mother, not knowing “if she was ready for something like this.”

Borough Manager Dr. Robert Burton, who coached DiMona’s sister in softball with his daughter eight years ago, also had a hand in the evening’s proceedings.

“You see things on the news and it is always someplace else,” he said. “When it hits close to home, it is very difficult. We are a community of volunteers, so between the Colony Club, some of the auxiliary organizations like the Scouts and the borough coordinating traffic management, ordering bottled water and tissues, everybody pulls together. This is what Medford Lakes does.”

There were a number of mourners at the vigil who came because their children were friends of DiMona. One of these was resident Susan Brown, whose son Tyler worked at the YMCA camp with DiMona prior to his death

three years ago in an accident, and had always described DiMona as a “great kid.”

Dan Doolin, whose son was one of DiMona’s classmates, described him as “a kind, caring, happy go-lucky person.”

Another resident, Lorraine Matteson, also had happy memories of DiMona through her daughter, who was also in his graduating class.

“Nick was my daughter’s first crush,” she said.

“He had a good family and a really good heart.”

Matteson added that the Army was DiMona’s world, because his father was in the Army.

“I just know he is with his dad right now,” she said.

Another resident, Kevin Karch, who was accompanied Matteson, called “the double blow” of DiMona’s fate being so similar to his father’s death 15 years earlier “unbelievable.”

Matteson offered her own explanation for the tragedy that had brought the town together.

“God put us all on this earth for a reason,” she said. “Some of us just get our reason completed earlier than others.”

A wake for DiMona is scheduled for Monday, April 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. and The Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, April 16 at 10:30 a.m., both at the St. Mary of the Lakes Church at 40 Jackson Road in Medford.

His body was retrieved at Philadelphia International Airport early Wednesday afternoon by the Warrior Watch group and given a flag escort while driven to the Bradley Funeral Home.
