Southampton Army Medic Returns from Middle East Deployment By Mark Hatoff

SOUTHAMPTON—Pfc. Sean Grannan, a firefighter and EMT from Southampton who joined the U.S. Army in September 2016 as a medic, received the celebration of a lifetime last week as he returned home from his first overseas deployment. Grannan, 22, a 2013 Shawnee High School (Medford) graduate, was met by a throng of supporters on the front lawn of a home in Southampton belonging to the family of his

fiancée, Amanda Shuster, just after 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 17. The celebration for the medic returning from the Middle East, organized by Operation Yellow Ribbon of South Jersey, was originally supposed to occur at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 11. But, Grannan’s plane was delayed, forcing a change of plans. “There was so much snow coming down at the Chicago airport, we couldn’t get out of there (on Dec. 11),” Grannan said. “I ended up getting home after 9 p.m.”

Grannan’s family members said that they didn’t learn that the Dec. 11 plans for the “Welcome Back Celebration” were canceled until nearly 30 minutes before it was supposed to begin. But, the second time was a charm. On Dec. 17, Grannan was sent to the Pic-A-Lilli Inn in Shamong to pick up wings. He was met by a biker group of veterans who were there to give him an escort back to the Shuster home. “They came in to get me,” said Grannan

laughingly. “I was a little nervous at first.” Once Grannan arrived back at the Shuster home, Dave Silver, president of Operation Yellow Ribbon of South Jersey, presided over a 15-minute ceremony honoring Grannan. The celebration featured veterans, politicians and representatives of his high school alma mater. “He’s an EMT (with the Hampton Lakes Emergency Squad) and a medic in the Army,” said Silver as he introduced the hero to those
