Another Shoe Drops in Washington Twp. Deputy Mayor Resigns Amid Controversy over Alleged Security Breaches By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer
WASHINGTON—Daniel James, a 15-year Washington Township committeeman, resigned last week from the governing body as information seeped out that some of the municipality’s most sensitive documents were recently reported missing and/or tampered with—the latest development in a widening controversy at town hall that has already seen two other resignations. Despite the backdrop, Mayor Dudley Lewis and Township Clerk Kathleen D. Hoffman are both adamant that James, also the municipality’s longtime deputy mayor, did not resign over the latest developments. “Dan James received a pension from the state and there is a rule that when you retire, you have to give up working any other government job to get your pension check,” Hoffman said. “He has retired from his job and that is why he has to resign.” Lewis concurred with that account, telling t he Pine Bar ren s Tr ib une t hat Ja mes ha d held a security job with the Atlantic County Parks Department, from which he retired at the end of June, deciding “this was the time to retire.” The mayor elaborated that although James was employed by the county, he was a beneficiary of the state pension system, which required him to give up any other government post once he left. “He had no intentions of giving up his township committee status,” said Lewis, who claimed that officials spent many hours trying to figure out if there was an exception to the rule, only to find “it was absolutely mandatory.ˮ “There was just no way around it,” Lewis said. Hoffman told the Pine Barrens Tribune on June 30 that James was going to resign from the committee on July 3. However, while James was

By Douglas D. M elegari Staff Writer
WASHINGTON—A 43-year resident of Washington Township has been selected to replace Daniel James on the municipality’s governing body after the 15-year township committeeman resigned last Tuesday. Paul Seybold, also vice president and trustee of the Lower Bank Volunteer Fire Co., was nominated and unanimously chosen to fill James’ shoes immediately following his resignation. “I am proud to step in, fill the position and
serve the community,” Seybold said. James is said to have resigned because he has retired from a job with a state pension. Township clerk Kathleen D. Hoffman said that a state law requires that all employees covered by the pension system give up working any other government job for sixmonths, following retirement, in order to receive a pension check. “Our township clerk was in conferences with the pension system over this law because See APPOINTED Page 22
