MEDFORD—Several once loyal supporters of Dawn Marie Addiego, a state senator from New Jersey’s 8th Legislative District who defected from the Republican party after nearly 25 years on Jan. 28 to join the Democratic party, have spent the last week berating the senator on her Facebook page.

Many of the senator’s disillusioned former backers have called on her to reimburse both the

New Jersey and Burlington County Republican Committees for any money spent in helping her get re-elected in 2017 and to step down from elected office.

Typical of the comments were references to Addiego’s defection as a “betrayal” and accusations that she was elected “under false pretenses.”

MOUNT HOLLY—A week after 8th Legislative District Senator Dawn Marie Addiego defected from the Republican party and joined the Democratic party, Republican 8th District Assemblyman Joseph Howarth has gone on the record with this newspaper about how and when he found out that the senator was switching parties, pushing back strongly against charges that he was preparing to follow in her footsteps.

He also denied an accusation published in last week’s Pine Barrens Tribune that he removed GOP legislative aide Brian Woods from his payroll shortly after Addiego’s announcement in preparation to join the Democratic party. Growing tension over that accusation, and Addiego’s defection, has caused both Howarth and fellow Republican Assemblyman Ryan Peters to seek out new, separate legislative offices and abandon a joint legislative office they have been sharing together for over a year.

Howarth told the Pine Barrens Tribune in a Feb. 4 interview that he received a text message at 1:23 p.m., on Jan. 28, from Rick England, then chief of staff of the now-defunct joint legislative office and currently Addiego’s chief of staff. Howarth said England asked him to “come to Trenton immediately” for a meeting after he finished his work day as a paraprofessional at Lenape Regional High School District’s Seneca High School in Tabernacle Township. The chief of staff, according to Howarth, emphasized that his request for a meeting was over an “important” matter, but did not disclose the details of what it was about.

Howarth said he replied, “sure” to the text message and asked England, “Where do you want to meet?” but never received a reply from the chief of staff.

“Ten minutes went by and I didn’t hear anything back,” Howarth said. “Then Dawn (Addiego) sent me a text message asking me to meet her in her office.”

After departing Seneca, Howarth said he traveled to Trenton and went to Addiego’s office. He said he arrived at the senator’s office around 3:20 p.m., but See DISARRAY/ Page 17

Burglary at Browns Mills Post Office Under Investigation; Reward Offered

BROWNS MILLS—A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever it was that burglarized a U.S. Post Office in the Browns Mills section of Pemberton Township last weekend, according to Alex Sylvester of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Sylvester told the Pine Barrens Tribune in a phone interview Tuesday that the perpetrator or perpetrators, after breaching one of the building’s doors, had made off with both “postal funds and assets,” the amount of which had yet to be determined by a financial audit.

He said no mail appeared to have been taken, however.

“Obviously we’re running down every lead and every avenue,” he said, noting that anyone who might have any information can call the Inspection Service’s 24-hour hotline at (877) 876-2455.

Sylvester added that he was not at liberty to reveal too many details of the burglary, which was also being probed by the Pemberton Township Police Department, while the investigation was underway.

Pemberton Township Police could provide no further details as of press time.

The U.S. Post Office in Browns Mills reopened for business on Feb. 5 after it was burglarized sometime last weekend.

The incident, however, did result in the closure of the facility, located at 27 Dearborn Ave., last Monday and part of Tuesday, inconveniencing many customers, who were reportedly lined up when it finally reopened for business. Boxholders, however, were allowed to retrieve their mail Tuesday morning.

A similar burglary occurred at a post office in Pemberton Borough back in April of 2016,

resulting in the arrest of Eric Conover from there, who subsequently was sentenced to five months in prison, according to Sylvester.

But while a $10,000 reward was offered in that case as well, he said, the individual who provided the tip that led to Conover’s arrest never made an attempt to collect it.

“The person didn’t want the reward—they were just being a good citizen,” he said.

Dump Truck Driver Issued Summons for Careless Driving After Forgetting to Lower Bed and Striking Powerline

SHAMONG —The driver of a Garden State Transport (GST) school bus that was transporting some children of the Shamong Township School District was arrested Monday after having allegedly viewed pornography on his cellphone in front of two young passengers.

The driver, Franck Lafortune, 64, of Burlington Township, was charged with obscenity to minors under the age of 18 and released pending a court appearance.

A news release from the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety said Lafortune was taken into custody after the incident was investigated

by State Troopers f rom the New Franck Jersey State Police Lafortune Red Lion Station and detectives from the Troop C Criminal Investigation Office.

According to the release, staff members of the district’s Indian Mills Elementary School were told on Feb. 4 that two children had informed their parents of having observed their school bus driver watching a pornographic video on his cellphone prior to exiting the bus at 8:30 a.m. The bus was reportedly parked at the time.

The parents of the children subsequently notified State Troopers, who launched the investigation leading to the driver’s arrest.

Lafortune has since been suspended by the bus company, according to Katie Brunt, the owner of GST, in a phone interview. Brunt added that she would have no further comment while an active investigation was under way.

Superintendent Christine Vespe also declined to comment during an ongoing investigation, other than to say that “the driver from Garden State Transport has been suspended” and “will have no further involvement with the Shamong School District.”

“The safety of our students, staff and community are not at risk,” she said. “The school district will continue to work with law enforcement.”

SH A MONG —W hen the lights went partially out at Indian Mills Fire Chief John Smith’s home on Jan. 21 at noon “sharp,” the 46-year fireman said he had a feeling that something had just gone terribly wrong in his neighborhood, but he didn’t know what it was, or where it was.

The fire chief, acting on his instincts, said he jumped in his vehicle and started searching the area for signs of trouble.

Smith found it at 12:03 p.m. that day, with the bed of a dump truck caught in utility wires in front of the Shamong Township Municipal Building and Public Works Yard. It was a scene in which he later described as the, “closest thing I have seen in person to the television show, on The Weather Channel, Highway from Hell.”

“When I arrived at the township building, which is on Willow Grove Road, there was an 18-wheeler with its dump body up in the air, in a dump position,” he said. “The body had hooked into the wires and lifted everything up into the air, and the only two wheels of the 18-wheeler left on the ground were in its front.

Sixteen wheels were in the air.”

The fire chief said that the driver of the dump truck, later identified by New Jersey

State Police as Robert Boehm, 76, of Milmay, had just delivered a load of salt at the Public Works yard before the accident.

“He was delivering salt to the township and had just dumped a load of it in front of the township garage,” Smith said. “The driver said he got distracted as he was pulling out of the driveway and forgot that he left the bed of the truck in the up position.”

As the driver attempted to exit the driveway of the yard, the body struck a secondaryelectric wire, bringing it down, Smith added.

“The driver was in the cab when I arrived,” Smith said. “He put his window down and I told him not to get out of the truck because a secondary electric wire was broken and swinging around the truck body.”

Smith said he was pleased that the driver complied with his request while help was dispatched to the scene. The fire chief added that Atlantic City Electric linemen later praised the decision, noting that they agreed there was a possibility that the dump truck driver could have been electrocuted had he gotten out of the vehicle.

“Atlantic City Electric arrived and told us, ‘Don’t let anyone touch the truck or get out of the truck until we shut off all of the electric.’, which they ultimately did,” Smith said. “After we looked back on it, we did the right thing 100

percent. Atlantic City Electric backed us up 100 percent, despite a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking online afterwards.”

The fire chief added that he also praised the dump truck driver for “having enough sense to stay in the truck” before his arrival.

“He did a good job on that part,” said Smith of the driver, who was working for Levari Trucking, of Vineland, at the time of the accident.

Trooper Alejandro Goez, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police, told this newspaper that Boehm was issued a summons for “careless driving: operating a vehicle causing property damage.”

Goez added that no injuries were reported from the accident.

“The sad thing about the entire thing is that it was a holiday (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) and nobody was there to holler at him that he was driving away with his bed still in the up position,” Smith said. “It knocked out one leg of power in the area.”

An 85-ton crane wrecker was brought to the scene to remove the 18-wheeler, Smith added, and the fire department had to also respond to a nearby home during the incident to attend to a woman without power who is reliant on electricity for oxygen.

GUEST COMMENTARY ‘Rain Tax’ is a Bad Deal for New Jersey

The last thing struggling taxpayers and small businesses need is yet another government entity that imposes fees, making this state even more unaffordable and costly to do business.

New Jersey has already earned an unenviable reputation as a high-tax and overregulated state, which has effectively scared off jobcreating businesses and capital investment.

Enacting legislation that imposes a ‘rain

tax’ would only serve to further solidify this reputation to the detriment of our state.

It is important to note the utility fees that this bill would authorize would be regressive, hitting people who can least afford it the hardest. This would include seniors and those making minimum wage.

If we want residents and businesses to remain here, let alone attract them to the state, then government needs to be reduced in size, scope, and cost – not expanded.

If policymakers in Trenton feel so strongly that funding is needed for stor mwater management, then the state can pony up the money. Conveniently, this bill would have counties and municipalities serve as the taxing entity, as opposed to the state.

If Trenton can find $2.1 million to cover the legal costs of illegal aliens facing deportation, then it can certainly find funding for stormwater management instead of creating yet more fees to impose on ratepayers and businesses. Or, maybe, the state can reconsider its spending priorities to better serve taxpayers.

To that end, Democratic Governor Murphy should veto the ‘rain tax’ and stand up for all those who can’t afford it.

Addiego Values Job Security Over Principles Groucho Marx once said, “Those are my principles, and if you don't like them…well I have others.”

Eighth Legislative District Senator Dawn Marie Addiego must have been thinking of the great comic’s remark when she decided to change her party affiliation and become a Democrat.

It appears that the guiding principle here is the desire to be on the winning side, where job security and career advancement are better assured.

Rather than represent the “loyal

opposition”—or “voice of sanity” as some might put it—she wants to be able to work with Sweeney and the rest of the left-wing shakedown gang in Trenton as they more thoroughly curtail our liberties and pick our pockets.

Would it be hoping for too much for Addiego to respect the principle of “truth in advertising,” and resign her seat to run as a Democrat in the next election?

Trump Policies Cause for Concern

The “Wizard of Oz,” “Gone with the Wind” and I are all turning 80 this year. All I want for my birthday is to be healthy, happy and safe.

Let me share some examples of how my happiness, health and safety are being jeopardized by the Trump administration.

When people in the FBI, the Coast Guard, TSA and FDA had to work for over a month without pay, I wondered how they could focus on Americans’ safety when they were concerned about providing for their families. Trump suffers from perseveration (look it up).

That is why he still wants a wall.

There are recipients of social security who are so mentally ill that they cannot work and yet this administration allows them to apply for gun permits.

Do we feel safe when Trump pulls out of the Nuclear Arms Treaty with Russia?

I’m concerned for my health when mining companies are permitted to dump toxins directly into waterways and the EPA is allowing automobiles

and power plants to emit toxins into the air. Regulations should be renamed protections. My health is threatened knowing that the Republicans’ agenda is to cut Social Security and Medicare by 21 percent.

It saddens me to know that migrant children are taken from their families and placed in private institutions.

Institutionalizing migrants in private facilities is a billion-dollar-a-year industry. Betsy DeVos charges our government over $700 per child, per day.

It sounds like a Republican scam to me.

Did you know that hunters are allowed to shoot bears and wolves sleeping in their den? It depresses me to know that my opponents at the bridge table think our president is doing a good job – so when I bid one “no Trump” I use my outdoor voice.

I can’t wait for 2020. I’ll call it the end of an error.

hile many of us claim that we believe in God, and try to live a good and decent life, we all fall short, in our thoughts, in our words and actions, both in what we do and in what we fail to do.

It is easy to fall into despair upon seeing how often we lapse and fall into sin. But the important thing is that we keep trying. Moral perfection is the brass ring that we never reach.

But it is encouraging to realize that God has always chosen fallible characters to do his work. Saints are nothing more than sinners who keep striving to be holier and better than they were the day before. In our efforts to become saints, we do well to remember that God wants us to be better, but that he’s not going to reject us for our occasional failures.

Frigid Weather Doesn’t Keep Seniors From Planned Trip

PEMBERTON—It’s apparently going to take more than a polar blast from Mother Nature to keep Pemberton Township seniors from taking part in their planned excursions, if the latest one was any example.

Despite wind chills that dipped into the single digits, all 47 seniors who signed up for a Jan. 30 trip to Sands Casino in Bethlehem, Pa. were assembled in the Browns Mills Acme parking lot when driver Marty Gravenstein arrived to pick them up at 9 a.m.

Admittedly, many of the participants had worried that the trip and other activities planned by the Pemberton Township Senior Center would be cancelled. But since no accompanying snowstorm materialized, the two-hour bus ride went off just as planned, with the bus reaching its destination precisely on time, despite encountering a minor delay

due to road repairs.

In fact, it proved to be something of a winter adventure, with only a few puffy clouds visible in an otherwise bright blue sky framing a glistening coating of snow as the bus entered the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Northeast Extension.

No sooner had the seniors arrived at the resort, a former steel mill that includes an outlet shopping mall with a hotel and expo center attached, than a greeter boarded the bus and loaded each of their coin cards with $25 towards gaming.

Upon leaving the bus, many of the seniors headed directly to the Steelworks Buffet with its tantalizing variety of offerings, the most popular of which with the group were a homemade butternut squash soup to start things off and a hot cherry cobbler dessert.

Some of the seniors, opted for one of the more moderate selections available at the food court, and a few had even brought prepared

lunches to allow more time to shop in the adjacent mall. Before the afternoon was over, in fact, many of those in the group were laden down with shopping bags.

Although there had been some snow squalls during the afternoon, the road home remained clear and ice free, and by 6 p.m.— the seniors arrived back at the Acme parking lot.

The next day, despite the cold blast having intensified, many seniors braved the frigid weather to attend a dress rehearsal of the annual Pemberton Players Musical, which this year was “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

The dress rehearsal was at the invitation of Christina Pinto, vocal instructor at Pemberton Township High School. The cast included students from all grades of the township school system, from the first through 12th, with many of the younger students portraying “Oompa Loompas.”

The pit orchestra, which included students, parents and faculty, provided the perfect

accompaniment for the musical. The stage crew also consisted of students and staff members who were in charge of both lighting and sound.

In fact, the cooperation between the various staff members and the student body is one of the distinguishing features of the Pemberton Players, each of whose productions represent a collaborative effort that provides an opportunity for the students to master a variety of theatrical skills.

Pemberton Township has many gifted students, and these musicals give them an opportunity to test and showcase their abilities, perhaps as a prelude to a career in entertainment. The faculty is dedicated to the advancement of the arts and gives many personal hours to assuring that the students have every opportunity to develop their talents.

The Helen Fort Middle School will present its annual musical on March 29, 30 and 31, with this year’s production to be “The Little Mermaid.”

Paraprofessional Terri Williams Honored by Seneca High Faculty

TABERNACLE—Terri Williams, a paraprofessional at Seneca High School, has been named the school’s Educational Services Professional of the Year for 20192020.

Williams, an assistant for Seneca’s Social Recreation Program, Buddies Club, and Adaptive Physical Education, was nominated anonymously by her coworkers, who described her as, “someone who knows her students well, and makes every effort to help them and their teachers meet their educational needs.”

One colleague praised her for “the compassion that she shows,” noting that “the care she gives her students is both motherly and professional and the subtle nuances that often go unnoticed by most are what makes Terri special.”

Another co-worker mentioned that Williams is often known to work after school hours “out of the goodness of her

heart.”

The co-worker added that Williams’ conscientious efforts to “go above and beyond to ensure the safety of both her students and others” whenever the need arose weren’t always recognized by others.

Williams said that she was surprised to hear her name called for the award, and that she was shocked and filled with emotion” by the honor.

“The moment was made even more special when my youngest son, Justin, and my husband, Sam, walked into the room to surprise me,” she noted.

Williams modestly embraced the praise.

“It is really hard for me to express how honored I am to receive the Educational Services Professional of the Year Award,” she said. “So much of what I do every day is made possible by a culmination of the hard work and dedication of so many people.

Thank you to everyone who helps me do my best to support my students, to be their best. I am truly grateful to work with such an amazing group of people.”

History Instructor Gerry Sherlock Named Seneca Teacher of the Year

TABERNACLE—Gerry Sherlock has been named Seneca High School’s 20192020 Teacher of the Year.

His selection for the prestigious honor was announced at a recent faculty meeting at the Tabernacle Township school.

“This honor means a lot to me,” said Sherlock, who is also the coordinator of Seneca’s Social Studies Department and serves as an assistant track coach. “I walk by the pictures of our former teachers of the year almost every day and joining that group of amazing educators is something that I will never take for granted.”

Sherlock, who was nominated for the honor anonymously by his co-workers, teaches U.S. History 1, U.S. History 2 and American Government at the high school.

“Somehow, in addition to being an engaging teacher, attentive and involved father of four, dedicated coach, mediator, and mentor to many students, Gerry always finds time to read a new book, tune into a new podcast, or read a provocative and relevant article pertaining to his subject areas,” said one anonymous co-worker in a press release obtained by the Pine Barrens Tribune. “He then raises the rest of his department up by sharing what he has learned or recommending that we read

or listen to those things he has found most interesting and helpful.”

Another anonymous co-worker cited in the press release described Sherlock’s impact on his students.

“Year after year, they mention him as one of their favorite teachers…not because his class is easy, but because he finds ways to teach while also making his classes enjoyable and interesting for students of all different levels, backgrounds, and interests,” the second-anonymous coworker said.

Sherlock responded to the honor with joy and humility, according to the high school’s public relations person, Julie Smith.

“I just want everyone to know that I am inspired everyday by so many teachers and students in this school,” Sherlock said.

“This is an amazing place to work and I am thankful for this honor.”

As a third anonymous co-worker noted, the feeling is mutual.

“For his wonderful achievements in the classroom and beyond, I can think of no one who would represent what we value at Seneca better than Gerry Sherlock,” the third-anonymous co-worker said.

Which Supplements and Medications Should Be Taken With Food?

here is much confusion about when to take herbal supplements, vitamins and medications. Do you take them on an empty stomach, or

with food?

No matter what you take, you should be drinking a full glass of water to make sure the pill doesn’t linger in your esophagus and cause irritation.

When a dietary supplement, enzyme or medication states the directive to “take with food,” it usually means to take while you’re eating, or a few minutes beforehand. But since you have food in your gastrointestinal tract for a little while, it would be fine to take the item right after you eat. There is no right or wrong.

Take the following supplements with food ASHWAGANDHA: This popular adaptogen should be thought of a little bit like ‘food’ because it is an herb. All herbs should be taken with a snack or a meal in order to amplify the benefits and reduce nausea.

MULTIVITAMINS OR PRE-NATAL VITAMINS: There are so many constituents in these supplements, that it is best to take them with food in order to minimize stomach upset and nausea.

COQ10: Some people take this powerful antioxidant for cellular energy production to support their heart, pancreas, liver and brain.

CoQ10 (ubiquinone) should be taken with food, or a fatty meal to speed absorption.

SELENIUM: This is taken for thyroid inflammation, bone health, prostate support and immune support. It is ideally taken with food.

MAGNESIUM: Some people take magnesium for depression, regularity, reduction of leg cramps and blood-pressure support. Like most minerals, taking magnesium with a snack can minimize diarrhea and stomach discomfort.

Take the following medications with food ANTACIDS: These help with heartburn or reflux. They should always be taken with food so that it can neutralize the acid that is secreted while you’re eating.

AMOXICILLIN: This is the most popular antibiotic, especially for children. I recommend it be given to toddlers and teens with food in order to reduce indigestion, nausea and vomiting.

CORTICOSTEROIDS: These are used for pain, allergic reactions, rashes and overactive immune systems. These should always be taken with food or milk. Some examples include prednisone, hydrocortisone and dexamethasone.

ASPIRIN AND IBUPROFEN: Ideally these are taken with food.

METFORMIN: Taken for diabetes, this medication is best taken around mealtime in order to reduce blood-sugar levels after eating.

ENZYME SUPPLEMENTS OR MEDICATIONS: Some people can’t digest food normally, so they take enzyme supplements, which break down the starch, fat and protein in a meal. These should be taken with meals. If a medication (e.g., Creon) is required to restore pancreatic function, it needs to be taken with food as well.

Forget the Memories, Fix the Walls!

W

e have lived in our current home for 13 years.

It is hard to believe, but it is true. All four of ​our sons were still at home when we built the house and were involved in the construction. My dearly beloved spouse, Pat, (who is a builder by trade) called us the “B Crew.”

Pat had his skilled carpenters (a.k.a. the A​ Crew) help him during the day and the boys and I would work on the construction of the house in the evenings. As a family we framed, insulated and laid hardwood floors like it was our job.

We cannot believe how fast the time has gone, but we love this house. We have celebrated many events here—everything from championship games to graduation parties. We have entertained guests from near and far, and in recent years, did​ an “Is that an eclipse or what?” party.

Those sons of ours left home one at a time.

Most of them returned for a stint, but time has moved on and after learning that the youngest of them would not be coming back to live, I decided to take a serious look at the basement—a.k.a., the boys’ domain.

We have a lovely basement, picture windows, walk-out doors and attractive living quarters. I wouldn’t say that it has been neglected because it was the boys’ idea to keep it clean and they did it well.

Recently, I pondered moving footballs out of their bedrooms, tossing the sports posters ​to​the wayside and getting rid of the superhero mumbo jumbo. Call me cold, if you must, but our offspring now have bedrooms of their own at homes far away from their mother, and since none of ​them house Superman figurines on their shelves, why should we?

I went down to do an assessment ​to see what the basement needed. With a fresh eye, and to the tune of, “Oh no!” I noticed that there was a perfect indentation of a golf ball in a wall.

That will change your mood in a hurry. But it didn’t end there, no sir.

One of our precious offspring had decided to mount the TV he’d received for graduation on the wall and then took the bracket with him to his campus home. Although a well-placed picture hid it—the damaged wall—one can’t leave a Go Big Red poster up forever.

I had forgotten about the day when I came down the steps to find a friend of our ​sons leaning up against the wall, with his hands and feet spread as if an officer was about to arrest him, as another friend blew blow darts at him. The pinholes aren’t big, but they still have a story to tell. Although I smiled and shook my head at the memory, it was time for those pinholes to take their leave.

We had previously fixed the large hole that was a result of a young man going through the wall during a game of hallway football. But we now decided that painting the whole wall might be better than the patch job we did at the time.

The post that holds up the beam that supports the ​basement ceiling has doubled as a place for a backboard for indoor basketball. Many games have been played there, and while the post is as strong as ever, it certainly could use a little patching and​ TLC. I was explaining all of these wall injuries to a friend just the other day.

“We raised four sons and entertained a lot of their friends in that basement,” I said.

“Are you sure you want to cover all of that up and erase all of those memories?” she asked with​ great sincerity.

I thought about it for a minute. I pondered the golf ball indentation, the pin holes from the blow darts and the slash mark on the wall that no one​ took responsibility for. I reflected on the history in the basement that told the story of raising our four sons and entertaining all of their friends.

Was I sure I wanted to cover it all up?

“Oh!” I said with a nod and a smirk. “Heck yeah!

Tips for choosing a wedding reception menu Weddings are memorable for a host of reasons. While couples remember their weddings because they mark the day they officially tied the knot, guests may remember weddings for other reasons,

including the food served at the reception.

Some wedding venues are known for their stunning landscapes, while others build their reputations on unique interiors that provide unforgettable ambiance.

But regardless of where weddings take place, guests are most apt to discuss the food served at the reception. Guests might rave about the escargot or complain that the fish was flaky, but couples who choose reception menus wisely can go a long way toward ensuring there are more compliments than complaints once the dinner bell rings.

Don’t zero in on specialties. According to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, a survey of nearly 13,000 brides

and grooms who tied the knot in 2017, the average wedding hosted 136 guests. While couples might be tempted by specialty dishes when choosing their wedding menus, couples who are hosting dozens, if not hundreds, of guests should keep things simple.

Consider potential allergies. In regard to entrées, make sure guests with food allergies can choose something that won’t make them sick. According to Food Allergy Research & Education®, an organization devoted to improving the quality of life of individuals with food allergies, some common foods cause the majority of allergic reactions. Peanuts, soy, sesame, and shellfish are among the most common food allergens, according to FARE, which also notes that allergies to wheat, milk and eggs are common in children. While such foods can still be served at wedding receptions, make sure to also include foods that are unlikely to trigger allergic reactions.

Couples can even ask guests to inform them of any food allergies in advance.

Don’t hesitate to offer a favorite food.

While specialty entrées might not be a great choice, especially at large receptions where lots of guests must be fed, a couple who has a favorite food that’s symbolic of their relationship should not hesitate to offer it during the cocktail hour. For example, a couple who met in Thailand may want to offer a favorite Thai dish.

Offer an elaborate dessert. The last bite guests will take is dessert, so couples who want their guests to go home raving about the food may want to offer something special after the entrées have been taken away. Some guests may not indulge, but those who do might end their nights thinking about the delicious dessert they enjoyed as the festivities drew to a close. If the dessert is especially unique, offer something more traditional alongside it for more hesitant guests.

Choosing a wedding menu should be fun. Menus should reflect not only couples’ tastes but also include some popular foods so no one goes home hungry.

“Rick (England) and (Addiego’s scheduler) Marilyn Williamson were in there, but she wasn’t,” Howarth said. “So, I waited around and then Dawn (Addiego) came into her office about ten minutes later and asked them, ‘Did you tell him?’ After that, they handed me a press release that was due to go out at 4 p.m.”

The press release, titled a “decision to change parties,” went out at 4:04 p.m. that day.

In the release, Addiego said that “gridlock in Washington” made it “increasingly clear that in order to effect change, you have to be part of the discussion and not on the outside looking in” and that the “national Republican party had lost its way.” However, the senator did not specify that she was joining the Democratic party.

State Senate President Stephen Sweeney, who Addiego praised in her press release, announced Addiego was joining the Democratic party in a subsequent statement.

Howarth claimed Addiego just stared at him as he read the press release and that she, along with her staffers, wanted to leave the statehouse prior to the announcement becoming public. Howarth said he didn’t say anything after reading the release, and “just left and went home” in a state of shock.

“The next day I said to them, ‘What did you guys do this for?’” Howarth said. “Dawn said nothing to me. I don’t have any idea why it happened. Our votes were all similar and aligned. There is nothing I can even recall, looking back, that gave me any indication that this was coming.”

It took nearly two days for Howarth to issue a statement regarding Addiego’s announcement.

He did not return this newspaper’s messages during that time. Howarth’s silence, until late

on Jan. 30, left speculation swirling about his intentions, while Peters was quick to condemn Addiego’s decision.

A report first surfaced late on Jan. 28 that Democrats had approached Howarth about joining their party.

Then, on Jan. 30, a high-level Republican source, claiming to have direct knowledge of the situation, told this newspaper that Republican officials learned that Howarth had allegedly approached the Democratic party about joining its ranks and was rebuffed. The source claimed that Howarth was then told on the same day that the Democratic party “likes their chances without him” and that they wanted to run “progressive candidates.”

Howarth refuted the accusations that he approached Democrats to change his party affiliation, claiming that untrue rumors were also recently spread throughout the district that he was not going to seek re-election.

“People throughout the county have always known who I was and what I stood for,” he said.

“They know that I have always attended all of their events and helped them out in any way that I could. I have no intention of abandoning my post, and leaving those people who voted for me. I have every intention to run for my seat as a Republican. I appreciate all of the calls and support, and emails and text messages that I have received from everyone that I have met throughout the county. It means a lot to me during these trying times.”

Howarth did note, however, that Assembly Majority Leader Louis Greenwald casually asks him each year to join the Democratic party.

However, Howarth claimed he has expressed to him that he was not interested in becoming a Democrat.

“Every single year we attend the South Jersey Legislative Business Association event,” he said. “Most people will come up to you and say things…I say to my colleagues all the time that, ‘You are good enough to be a Republican.’ I

didn’t think anything of it (Greenwald’s offer).

I told him ‘no.’ I am not going to hide that. He asks me that every year.”

As this newspaper reported last week, the high-level Republican source said that Howarth’s actions, such as removing Woods as an aide and not responding to apparent communications from the Burlington County Republican Committee, were made because he was “getting ready to go” from the Republican party.

Howarth acknowledged that he removed Woods from his payroll the morning following Addiego’s announcement, but claimed that it was “by default.”

“Woods was fired from my payroll to make room on it for everybody that he and Ryan (Peters) fired that morning (Jan. 29),” Howarth said. “I wasn’t given a choice. I was trying to keep things together. On Tuesday morning (Jan. 29), I was told Woods came in and fired a person we shared and I had to make room for her.”

Peters, when asked on Feb. 5 about the accusation that he had “fired” numerous legislative staffers, including one the assemblymen shared, gave a candid interview that lasted over an hour, saying he could not believe that such a charge would be made.

“It is an outright lie,” he said. “I don’t have the power to remove people from the payroll of Dawn (Addiego) and Joe (Howarth).”

Peters added that he removed three legislative staffers off his payroll, who were being jointly shared by the three legislators, as part of a restructuring. He claimed they were “really” Addiego’s aides and went with her when she announced the defection. Peters said he was told Addiego assured the three staffers that “their jobs are safe,” though he has yet to speak to the senator.

“Dawn still has yet to speak to me as of today,” said Peters, who learned of Addiego’s defection through the media, despite being one of her running mates on the Republican ticket in 2017.

Peters did not hear from Howarth about his intentions until late last week. When Peters agreed to a Jan. 30 interview with this newspaper for last week’s Addiego story, he said he didn’t know Howarth’s intentions.

Peters, a former Navy SEAL, repeatedly described the actions of Addiego and Howarth as a “gut punch” and acknowledged that he was raw from what has taken place.

“I am really deeply disappointed in Dawn’s actions,” he said. “I joined a legislative ticket with her. Her actions floor me. Joe was my running mate, and for him to just reach out to Rick (England) and Dawn (Addiego) the day after, but not me…it is a gut punch. I had to call him after the two days went by (on Jan. 31) when I finally heard he reached out to (Burlington County Republican Committee Chairman) Sean (Earlen). I had to call him.

He never even called me.”

Peters told this newspaper on Jan. 30 that he tried to call Addiego and England multiple times, but didn’t get any response.

“So, I sent a group text message to them today asking them to let me know their intentions, so I can figure out what to do,” he said. “They responded that they are doing a legal review of the transition for personnel and office space, and that they would get back to me after they spoke to their attorneys. I would have thought that if she planned to do this, she would have talked to me about it before releasing the statement.”

Peters, on Feb. 5, said that since the Jan. 30 interview, Addiego responded to a text message of his that she would reach out to him by phone, but never actually did.

“She sent me a text saying, ‘I will call you later today.’ and then she sent me a text saying, ‘I will call you when the senate attorneys have done a legal review.’ What senate attorneys? I don’t even know what that means.”

Peters, throughout the interview, challenged the senator to answer, “Why wasn’t this done more professionally?”

“It has broken a lot of trust that I have, and

a level of professionalism I would expect from a senator,” Peters said. “I come from a place in the military where we all have each other’s backs.”

Howarth told this newspaper on Feb. 4 that he will be “moving things out” and “there is no way he can stay in his current office.”

Peters, on Feb. 5, released a video on Facebook announcing that he too was getting his own office.

“I just want to give you an update on my situation and ask my constituents to bear with me over these next couple of weeks,” said Peters in the video. “As I am sure you have seen in the news, there has been a recent shakeup in my district office that I shared with Senator Dawn Addiego and Assemblyman Joe Howarth.

Dawn Addiego unexpectedly switched parties and caught me by complete surprise. I have had to since pivot and find a new location for my district office. I hope to get this transition over quickly so that my constituents can once again receive the level of support they have gotten from me and come to expect.”

Immediately after the Facebook video was released, Burlington County Sheriff Jean Stanfield commented underneath it that Peters has her full support. Stanfield has not yet said whether she will seek re-election this year as a Republican.

“Ryan you have my total support,” the sheriff wrote. “I'd be happy to volunteer nights/ weekends to help you with your constituent services and office work. I believe in you!”

Peters, in the interview with this newspaper, said that the Office of Legal Services (OLS) is helping to conduct the search for his next legislative office because he can only agree to sign a 10-month lease, as it is illegal for an assemblyman to lease an office space for a time beyond the General Election Day that they are on the ballot.

“Finding a place on a 10-month lease is difficult,” he said.

Peters also addressed speculation and reports that he might be gearing up for a run for Congress in the Third Congressional District of New Jersey, reaffirming what he told this newspaper a month ago, “no.”

“Here is the absolute truth—it is pretty simple—I am running for re-election to the Assembly,” he said. “Find someone else to run for Congress. I love serving constituents in the 8th. If I were to run for Congress, every consultant would say running for Assembly is the dumbest thing I can do. I don’t have anything to hide. My intentions are so pure.”

Peters added that politics is his way to serve and give back to the community and he wants to return to focusing on his mission.

“The thing that is bugging me the most about all of this is how it has affected my ability to reach out to my constituents,” he said. “I don’t run for people to kiss my ring and call me assemblyman. I run because I want to do public service. I got stuck with this and no communication from all of these people. At this point, I just want to move on from all of this.”

Earlen told the Pine Barrens Tribune on Feb. 5 that the Burlington County Republican Committee has not yet made a decision about whether it will select Howarth to appear on the Republican ticket with Peters.

“The party has not made that decision yet,” Earlen said. “I expect that decision to be made shortly. Soon. There will be a county committee meeting as we prepare a slate of candidates in June. That process will be open.”

Peters told this newspaper that the decision about whether he and Howarth will appear on the ticket is going to be left up to the Atlantic, Burlington and Camden County Republican Committees.

England, on Feb. 5, said that Addiego was unavailable for an interview with this newspaper. However, the chief of staff held an off-the-record conversation with this newspaper about the senator’s intentions and overall reaction to the fallout.

“I am not burdened with challenges,” Peters said. “I am blessed with them.”

“If I wanted to vote for a Dem, I would have,” noted one woman in response to the senator’s statement about her decision to leave the GOP. “You are taking my vote away. No one should be allowed to switch parties during an elected term. Finish what you started, then align yourself with whomever you please.”

Brett Hann, one of those who was critical of the senator’s decision on her Facebook page and called for her to step down, went even further during a Feb. 6 phone interview with the Pine Barrens Tribune.

“She accepted Republican donations,” he said.

“The Republicans helped fund her campaign.

People voted for her because she ideologically said she was a Republican. It is OK to change parties, but she needs to resign. There needs to be a special election. She needs to be elected as a Democrat. To me, she got elected under fraudulent circumstances.

Hann added that he felt Addiego’s victory was “illegitimate.”

“I think the Republican Party needs to step up to the plate and push to recall her,” he said.

Such ethical questions concerning her defection prompted this newspaper to look into the question of whether Addiego is lawfully allowed to switch parties and not return campaign contributions she received while advertising that she was a member of the GOP. Leland Moore, a spokesperson for the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, when contacted by the Pine Barrens Tribune on Feb. 5, was unable to comment on whether Addiego is in violation of any law by switching parties, or if she must give back campaign contributions, because doing so would be seen as providing legal advice to the newspaper.

However, Joseph Donohue, deputy director of the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC), a state agency which monitors the campaign financing of all elections in the state, said there is no rule that a candidate must refund money if they switch parties.

“Of course, there also is no rule stopping them from doing so voluntarily,” he said. “Keep in mind that most candidates probably receive checks from constituents of both parties, regardless of their affiliation.”

Burlington County Republican Committee Chairman Sean Earlen declined to comment Monday on whether he felt the senator should reimburse any campaign contributors.

The New Jersey Republican State Committee has already launched a petition to recall the senator, which would require the signatures of 25 percent, or 40,021 of the district’s registered voters.

It was unclear as of press time how many signatures the state party had received so far.

The Burlington County Republican Committee shared the recall petition on its Facebook page on Jan. 30, but hadn’t posted anything about it again as of press time.

Addiego has already reversed her position on the state’s minimum wage, a major issue that has been on the minds of voters throughout the state.

In 2012, Addiego voted against two bills that would have increased the state’s minimum wage and required annual adjustments tied to increases in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

“It is clear that the large minimum wage increase that Democrats are pushing will make it harder for out-of-work New Jerseyans to find jobs, and more difficult for struggling small businesses to maintain the employees they already have,” said Addiego in a statement issued on Nov. 29, 2012, when she cast the dissenting votes. “Furthermore, enacting automatic annual wage increases will add an ever-increasing burden on employers. We don’t have a crystal ball that lets us see future economic conditions, so mandating future wage

Addiego, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, abstained on similar legislation to increase the state’s minimum wage earlier this year. She ended up voting in favor of the new bill when it reached the Senate floor on Jan. 31. The legislation was signed into law by Democratic Governor Phil Murphy on Feb. 4.

Under the new law, the base minimum wage for New Jersey workers will increase from $8.85 per hour to $10 per hour on July 1. By Jan. 1, 2020, the statewide minimum wage will increase to $11 per hour, and then will increase by $1 per hour every Jan. 1 until it reaches $15 per hour on Jan. 1, 2024.

For seasonal workers and employees at small businesses with five or fewer workers, the base minimum wage will reach $15 per hour by Jan. 1, 2026. By Jan. 1, 2028, workers in these groups will receive the minimum wage inclusive of inflation adjustments that take place from 2024 to 2028, equalizing the minimum wage with the main cohort of New Jersey workers.

For agricultural workers, the base minimum wage will increase to $12.50 per hour by Jan. 1, 2024. No later than March 31, 2024, the New Jersey labor commissioner and secretary of agriculture will jointly decide whether to recommend that the minimum wage for agricultural workers increase to $15 per hour by Jan.1, 2027, as specified in the bill. If they cannot come to an agreement, a third member, appointed by the state’s governor, with the advice and consent of the Senate, will break the tie. If there is a recommendation to disapprove of the scheduled increases, or suggest an alternative pathway, the Legislature will have the ability to implement that recommendation by passage of a concurrent resolution.

“I support this $15 minimum wage legislation because it represents a responsible, balanced compromise that will enable employees to support their families while providing a five-year phasein that gives businesses time to adjust,” said Addiego in a statement issued on Jan. 31 after switching parties. “It is important to remember that many leading private companies and local governments, and major hospital employers, have already adopted a $15 minimum wage.”

The senator added that she felt it was important that the bill provided for a more gradual sevenyear phase-in for seasonal employees and small businesses with five employees or less.

“As a senator from Burlington County, which has one of the strongest agricultural sectors in the state, I know how critically important it is to set a separate schedule for farm employees, which this bill does,” Addiego said. “Our crop farmers and production farmers, in particular, compete on price in a wide economy, and we can't price them out of the market. It is important to remember that, under current law, food and housing provided by farmers to their employees will continue to count as part of the wage.”

The senator also said that Senate President Stephen Sweeney addressed her concern about how the wage increase would impact young workers.

“Sweeney has committed to work with me on a tax credit for those who hire teens under the new minimum wage,” Addiego said. “We have to make sure our young people continue to have opportunities for employment, and I believe a targeted tax credit can ensure that.”

In Addiego’s statement announcing her defection, she said that she felt the National Republican Party had “lost its way.” Hann took particular issue with that comment, pointing out that Addiego is supposed to represent her constituents on state issues, such as the minimum wage increase.

“There is a huge difference with politics on a national level versus a local level,” he said. “That is not something that, in my mind, on a local level, Republicans would be in favor of. So, now she totally sold out the Republican, conservative voter who elected her.”

Proposals to increase the state’s minimum wage have always been viewed unfavorably in the

8th Legislative District, which has an economy that consists primarily of restaurants, mom-andpop small businesses and farms.

“Today I rise as a voice for the Production Agriculture Farmers of New Jersey,” said 8th District Assemblyman Joseph Howarth when the bill was on the state Assembly floor on Jan. 31. “These farmers, specifically in Hammonton, use seasonal employees. They house and feed, at their own expense, people who have come to help pick their crops, sometimes to the tune of $40,000 that they will never recoup. These particular prices that they pay are not driven by them. They are driven by the market. If they don’t have a competitive price in New Jersey, the market goes elsewhere.”

Howarth, who referred this newspaper to his comments made on the Assembly floor when asked about Addiego’s vote, voted against raising the state’s minimum wage, a move that had significance as rumors swirled that the assemblyman was contemplating joining the Democratic Party as well.

Assemblyman Ryan Peters, also of the 8th District, blasted Addiego’s vote in an interview with this newspaper.

“I think everybody can see for themselves what that vote is,” he said. “Murphy’s statement said it best, ‘Welcome to the party.’”

Peters was referring to what Murphy said following Addiego’s defection from the GOP. “In the days and months ahead, we’ll be continuing the fight to put all New Jersey residents on a path to a livable wage, attack the inequities in our social justice system by legalizing adult-use marijuana, and finally revamp New Jersey’s incentives programs to hold recipients accountable and ensure our residents see the benefits they deserve,” Murphy said. “I welcome Senator Addiego to that fight, and I look forward to working with the entire Legislature to make New Jersey a stronger and fairer place in 2019.”

Hann, during the interview with this newspaper, again called on the senator to resign.

He questioned whether the senator’s ideology is now closer to Murphy’s then former Republican President Ronald Reagan’s. Addiego, in her defection statement, said that her core values which originally drew her to the Republican Party have not changed, but the party that once echoed the vision of Reagan no longer exists.

“She owes the voters a better explanation than the one she gave for switching parties,” Hann said.

“She should be announcing that she is switching parties during a town hall, where she can face the voters and answer constituent questions.”

Peters made a bold prediction to this newspaper about the senator’s future following her vote to raise the minimum wage.

“There is no way Dawn (Addiego) is running for re-election in 2021,” he said. “She will step down in September 2020, after she gets some six-figure patronage job, probably at the Delaware River Port Authority.”

In September 2020, they can appoint someone in her spot without re-election. I don’t think she is worried about her votes anymore. I think she is going to get a patronage job.”

Peters added that he can’t wait to pull out his copy of the Pine Barrens Tribune in 2022 and show people how he predicted the senator’s future accurately.

Addiego’s chief of staff, Rick England, said the senator was unavailable to comment on the backlash, but did hold an off-the-record conversation with this newspaper about the senator’s intentions and ideology.

“I think resigning is the honorable thing to do,” Hann said. “Otherwise, she has just proven herself to be an ideological fraud, who is nothing but a career politician and not serving those who elected her.”

“She owes an explanation to voters. Hold a town hall meeting and field our questions.”
