MEDFOR D —Eighth Legislative District Senator Dawn Marie Addiego sent shockwaves through the power structures of the county and state political parties Monday when she announced through a statement that she was switching her party affiliation from Republican to Democrat, effective immediately, after nearly 25 years of embracing the GOP’s values and many of the party’s faithful volunteering on her behalf to get her reelected in 2017. Addiego’s Jan. 28 announcement seems to have blindsided Ryan Peters, a Republican assemblyman in the district, and left speculation swirling about the intentions of 8th District Assemblyman Joe Howarth, a Republican who has often been in lockstep with the senator and who has stayed unusually silent for nearly two days. “As gridlock in Washington dominates the news, it has become increasingly clear that in order to effect change, you have to be part of the discussion and not on the outside looking in,” the senator wrote. “The people of the 8th District did not elect me to be content in the role of loyal opposition. I have had the opportunity over the course of the last year to work closely with Senate President (Stephen M.) Sweeney on the Economic and Fiscal Policy Work Group.
