Good Farm Project Cost Rises Again Due to No Electricity, Severe Erosion All While Fire Officials Plead for Funding to Purchase Needed Equipment By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

S O U T H A M P T O N — T h e fi r s t phase of a municipal project to install recreational facilities on the Good Farm in Southampton Township has run amuck, all while the township’s fire companies plead for financial assistance. Officials last week went on the

record that “in retrospect” they should have budgeted for and installed riprap stabilization and storm drainage piping during the project’s initial phase to prevent soil erosion at the site, and that they are having “afterthoughts” about not placing fencing around the perimeter of a pond that was designed to hold a depth of six to eight feet of water.

Recent heavy rain has now filled the pond with water, causing safety concerns, and eroded part of the site’s soil. The latter, according to Rakesh Darji, an engineer with Environmental Resolutions, has caused Burlington County, which provided the municipality with $842,000 in grant funding toward Phase One, to call for the See CLIMBING/ Page 22

PEMBERTON—Last Friday night, July 19, was violent and chaotic in the Sunbury Village section of Pemberton Township. A pair of shootings—with a connection between the two incidents not being ruled out by authorities—left an unidentified 20-yearold man injured and another man, Witney Rivera, 41, of 183 Kinsley Road, dead. No arrests have been made in connection to the first shooting of the 20-year-old man, according to Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Joel Bewley on Tuesday. Rivera, who the state Attorney General’s Office said was reported by civilian witnesses to be armed with a long scythe during an altercation in Sunbury Village, was fatally shot by a Pemberton Borough Police Department officer responding to reports of the altercation shortly after the first shooting. The borough is within a minute of Sunbury Village and commonly shares its resources with the township. The police involved shooting is now under investigation by the state Attorney General’s Office, pursuant to a new law enacted in January 2019, Senate Bill 1036, which requires that office to conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity, or See SHOOTINGS/ Page 25
