Love Leaves a

Teen Killed in Pa. Dirt Bike Accident Remembered for His Endless Pursuit of Everything He Wanted in Life By Douglas D. Melegari Staff Writer

MEDFORD —Recent Shawnee High School graduate Daniel McDowell spent his last few days before his June 24 death the way he had been spending his entire life: in an endless pursuit of everything he wanted. The 17-year old teenager, who died in Ulster Township, Pa. from blunt force trauma after striking a tree while riding a dirt bike just five days before his 18th birthday, is being remembered by friends and family for believing that anything is possible, according to his mother, Debbie McDowell. “He believed there is no reason why we can’t get everything we want out of life,” she said in a July 14 interview with this newspaper. “He had this endless pursuit of everything he wanted in life.” Daniel McDowell, who she described as “75 percent fish,” didn’t take “no” for an answer in a good way, or let anything deter him from living his life to the fullest. Perhaps there was no better example of his dogged determination to have a good life, Debbie McDowell contended, than his

efforts to arrange a date for senior prom—his persistence turned what seemed impractical into something that was practical. Debbie McDowell said her family annually spends two weeks in Florida each year, visiting with relatives of her husband, Mark. One place the family frequents on the excursions is the world’s largest McDonald’s in Orlando, Fla. Known for its second-floor arcade, Daniel McDowell, an avid video gamer who loved playing Super Smash Brothers and any Nintendo Zelda Game, was fascinated by the establishment. It was here that he met Lauren Bennett, of Ulster. “He saw she was wearing an Overwatch (arcade game) t-shirt,” Debbie McDowell said. “He struck up a conversation with her and they became and stayed friends, helping each other through difficult times.” When it became time for the Shawnee senior prom this May, Daniel McDowell wanted Bennett to come to prom with him, despite living five hours apart.
