When August begins to fold into September,Southern Illinoisans know that it is time forthe Du Quoin State Fair. This year it is theFair’s 100th Birthday! In 1923 William R. Hayes and a small groupof business associates, Jim McSherry, J.H. Metten and E.B. Maclin sold stock for$100.00 a share to launch the Du Quoin StateFair. They used the funds to purchase thirtyacres south of Du Quoin, build a smallwooden grandstand, and launch the first Fair.Admission was fifty cents. Among the variousattractions were dog races, harness horseraces, hunting dog shows, auto races, and alady’s fashion show. Now, 100 years later, there is something for everyone at theDu Quoin State Fair. And many of the events and activitiesare free. The free entertainment tent will have shows everyday. There are evening concerts in the main grandstand throughout the Fair. On the grounds are all kinds of exhibits anddisplays—from tractors to hot tubs. There are all kinds ofcompetitions—from bands to beards to ponytails and smiles. There is even a baby picture contest. At the Open-Air HorseSnow there are horse pulls, barrel racing and rodeo events. On the grounds you will find truck and tractor pulls, and ademolition derby. The final Saturday and Sunday will bringthe USAC Silver Crown and ARCA Modified Stock car races in theGrandstand.TheDuQuoin State Fair: visit it; see it; hear it; touch it;feel it and enjoy. It is a Southern Illinois tradition.

Du Quoin State Fair Celebrates 100th Anniversary

The fair - which was once as short as four days (plus two “preview days”) in 1927 - has grown to 10. And ticket prices? 50 cents during the fair’s inception in 1923. A fateful visit to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904 inspired fair founder W.R. Hayes - who had a passion for harness racing and showmanship - to lead a Du Quoin committee two decades later in creating what would become a cultural and entertainment phenomenon on 658 acres in Southern Illinois.

The entire Hayes family, in fact, deserves credit for making the fair what it is and in 1931, W.R. Hayes purchased

“It’s obviously a milestone and something our kids can remember 25 years from now.”

The fair is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, although it is technically the 99th fair after the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 festivities.Thenames of those who have performed on the grandstand stage are a who’s who of stardom: Bob Hope, Sonny and Cher, Johnny Cash, Liberace, Andy Griffith, Hank Williams Jr., Wayne Newton, Red Skelton, Willie Nelson and Johnny Carson, to name a few. Former fair general manager Fred Huff Sr., who came to the fair in 1971 after an 11-year tenure as sports information director at SIU, stated a real treat was Carson’s opening act, comic/entertainer George Kirby. “He was supposed to do 30 minutes and wound up doing an hour and 15 minutes,” Huff said. “The audience wouldn’t let him leave. “He was great. We didn’t know who he was, he was just the opening act.”According to Huff, Carson acknowledged Kirby’s performance during his time on stage. “He said, ‘Folks, I’ve heard this guy Kirby,’” Huff said. “’I was listening to some of his stuff. I don’t know who he is, I’ve never heard the name before, what a magnificent entertainer. ‘You’ve been entertained well tonight.’” Huff - as well as his son, Fred Jr., and Richard “Doc” Holliday - are a treasure trove of information on the fair.

“Both fairs are really ag-centric and it’s always been a highlight of the summer for me,” said Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II, who stated that at age 53, he has grown up with the fair. “I couldn’t be happier to celebrate the 100th.

Page 6 Du Quoin State Fair 2022

By Pete Spitler DU QUOIN – A dash of Las Vegas, a smidge of Broadway, a sprinkling of the Grand Ole Opry, a pinch of Hollywood and a heaping helping of small-town values.

Fred Sr., who was named the fair’s general manager in 1972, booked all of the entertainment, with Bill Hayes’ permission, and fair artist Holliday was often tasked with picking up the celebrities from the airport and chauffeuring them to the fairgrounds. “We had some damn good fairs in the 1970s,” Fred Sr. said. “I did all the hiring. Bill took me under his wing and took me to booking agents and all that for two years when he went to see them. “Then he said, ‘Okay, you do the booking now.’ I did the booking, but only with Bill’s approval. He had to give me final approval.”

Fred Sr. stayed with the fair until 1977 and told a story about booking Skelton for the Labor Day show during his final year. “He moved into the plastic house on Tuesday, a full week before Labor Day,” he said. “I’m not kidding, this was one of the most enjoyable weeks I’ve spent - not because it was his last week at the fair, that was sad, that hurt me inside - but I realized after one day he was here the first day that it was going to be a babysitting duty and I, of course, didn’t have time to do that.”That honor went to one of Fred Sr.’s chief assistants in Holladay and the two became very close friends. “I didn’t spend nearly as much time with (Skelton) as Doc Holliday,” Fred Sr. said. “Doc practically lived with him. He held his hand and Red would say, ‘I need to buy a new shirt or something.’

“Doc, of course, would go into the store with him and Doc was looking around at a pair of shoes once and when they started leaving, Red said, ‘Did you get your gift?’ Doc said, ‘What do you mean?’ Red said, ‘Your shoes there.’ He bought Doc’s shoes and Doc didn’t even know it.” That story and many others seems to demonstrate how a fair in a city of 8,000 people was able to captivate the nation.

“This fairgrounds is just an incredible place,” Costello said. “Du Quoin is located right off the interstate, not too far away from SIU. “It’s a great location. It’s Ag-centric. We’ve really had some incredible talent here. Since 1989, the people who have performed here include George Strait, Garth Brooks, New Kids on the Block and Andre the Giant.”

Du Quoin State Fair’s recipe for success has entertained hundreds of thousands of people while keeping the city in the spotlight for decades.

“I think this fair has done an incredible job of bringing talent to Southern Illinois and (Manager) Josh (Gross) has done a great job with the grandstand acts.”“There’s only one person who says they get to be the manager,” Gross said. “Being from here, growing up here…my father told me recently my grandpa would be extremely proud of me for running the 100th Du Quoin Fair. “Just knowing I get to have that memory forever.”

The 350-foot, steel-and-concrete grandstand - which replaced the original that burnt - was built in time for the 1945 fair later that summer with a capacity of 9,000. The north and south grandstands were added in 1957, increasing capacity to 20,000.

Du Quoin State Fair Celebrates 100th Anniversary

“Eydie Gorme and Steve Lawrence would come in and eat after the night’s show and Red Skelton would come in and eat after his night show. It was just kind of a place they came after the show.”

The Hayes Fair Acres Stable, a plantation-style building, was 520 feet long and home to 120 stalls and the fair’s offices. Records from the first 47 years of the fair, as well as other memorabilia, were lost to the flames. Since the very beginning, racing of many kinds has been a feature of the Du Quoin State Fair. The Hambletonian Stakes - the richest harness race for 3-year-old trotting horses - arrived in 1957, drawing attention from across the nation. Gene and Don Hayes, sons of W.R. Hayes, were finally able to get the event away from Goshen, New York, after prior unsuccessful attempts.

The grandstand fire wasn’t the only tragedy to befall the fair, as its signature Hayes Fair Acres Stable was destroyed in an August 8, 1970 blaze.

Du Quoin State Fair 2022 800 additional acres of pockmarked former strip mine ground and began the long process of restoration. “I remember the days when the Hayes family had it,” said Du Quoin Mayor Guy Alongi. “We had our restaurant and I was a kid busing tables.

The Hayeses’ marketing strategies helped too. From placemats featuring the fair in area restaurants to an eight-page “Fair Herald” special section printed by the Du Quoin Evening Call, people were pulled to Du Quoin every year. The Call printed its final edition on July 15 after 127 years in publication. “Once we got the Saturday edition out, we got the Herald on the flatbed press,” said Fred Sr., whose first news story for the Evening Call was covering the June 16, 1945 fire that destroyed the fairgrounds’ original grandstand. “If you know anything about the flatbed press, it was pretty damn slow. “We ran that press, stopping only to change rolls of paper, until Monday morning. We printed 100,000 of those things. They were good tools.”

The first carnival, provided by D.D. Murphy Shows, arrived in 1926 via 50 railroad cars from the Illinois State Fair.

The Hambletonian would remain (thanks to the Hayes family’s efforts in fending off attempts to move it) in Du Quoin until 1981, when it was moved to its current location of Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, New Jersey.A1965 Sports Illustrated article noted the Hayes family had invested more than $2.5 million into the 658-acre fairgrounds, the fair and the promotion of the Hambletonian. The Hambletonian was replaced by the World Trotting Derby, which remained a Du Quoin staple until 2009, when state budget cuts forced its cancellation.

Although the World Trotting Derby awarded large purses and attracted name horses, it could not capture the popularity and the tradition of the Hambletonian.Harnessracing will return to the grandstand this year and the Illinois Department of Agriculture has increased the purse of the four championship races - Governor’s Cup, First Lady’s Cup, the Lieutenant’s Cup and the Director’s Cup - to $100,000 in honor of the fair’s anniversary.

While harness racing created a lot of headlines, both locally and nationally, for the Du Quoin State Fair, auto racing played just as big a part.

“Thank God the state came along and bailed us out,” said Alongi, who referred to the Jabr family’s ownership of the fair as a “bump” in its storied history. “I say bailed us out, bailed the fair and the town out to where the fair could move forward.”

“Regardless of the politics, you have an administration that has bought into the Du Quoin State Fair,” he said. “They’re spending money here.

Measuring 60 feet long by 40 feet tall, the first artist was John Meade of Johnston City. The billboard was repainted in the early 1970s and again in 1979. In 1986, the first year of state ownership of the fair, it began featuring each year’s fair slogan.

“It’s a good sign when they start spending money on the biggest building on the grounds, which is the grandstand,” Alongi continued. “They’re tuckpointing it. They’re putting a new roof on it. They’re putting new glass in it.“They’re upgrading the wiring system, the plumbing system. The state would not do that if they were going to shutter it. Stop and think, other than a prison, what has the state really ever shuttered?”

“I think it speaks to the energy people have that’s been facilitated with these grounds. Different people have played a part in its operation and upkeep.”-Fred Huff Sr. and Fred Huff Jr. contributed to this article.

Gross pointed toward “resilience and stability” as a reason why the fair has lasted this long. “The fair has proven to be resilient,” he said. “We’ve gone through times when the Southern Illinois economy was doing well and times it wasn’t.

“This governor, regardless of whether it’s Democrat or Republican, you have a guy that him and his wife have bought into the fairgrounds. They’re going to do more renovations on the (Downstate Governor’s) mansion.”

Du Quoin State Fair Celebrates 100th Anniversary

The grandstand - which received a refurbishment this year - overlooks what became Du Quoin’s Magic Mile dirt track. The first car races since the start of World War II were held in 1946 - the first year the fair closed on Labor Day - and the fair expanded to a weeklong event for the first time.

Some of racing’s famous names such as A.J. Foyt, Bobby Unser, Mario Andretti and Ted Horn all competed on the Mile. Horn was racing’s biggest name prior to and following World War II. He was killed in a 1948 crash during his second lap on the Magic Mile when his left front spindle failed and he lost a wheel. His car went out of control and somersaulted through the air. Horn was alive when he was taken to Marshall Browning Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries upon arrival.

More than 35 years of state ownership - which included the opening of the 115,000-square-foot, multi-purpose Southern Illinois Center in 2004later, Alongi said he sees signs that the state remains committed to the Du Quoin fairgrounds.

Horn was just 38 years old and his wife of 17 days was in the grandstand that day. The Du Quoin State Fair has hosted the Ted Horn Memorial race everThesince.giant billboard near the main entrance was constructed in 1963 and originally featured a neon and front-lit marquee, with the neon portion disappearing sometime between 1999 and 2003.

The state purchased the fair from the Saleh Jabr family - who had bought it from the Hayes family in 1980 - for $3.35 million, ending a rough era when the longtime event endured years of lower attendance and rumors of cancellation.

Hayes and community leaders in 1923. The notoriety in harness racing was enhanced in 1957 when the Hayes family brought the Hambletonian to the fairgrounds. As the first event for the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Trotters, for 24 years the Hambletonian called the Du Quoin Fairgrounds home. Despite the Hambletonian eventually moving on, the fairgrounds continued as a destination for high quality harness racing when the World Trotting Derby made Du Quoin its home until 2009. Today, harness racing continues to be showcased, providing a lasting legacy at the Du Quoin State Fair. The first night of the fair, the horses take center stage under the lights. The action continues Saturday with harness racing that includes the Governor’s Cup, First Lady’s Cup, Lt. Governor’s Cup and the Directors Cup.

The Governor’s Cup featuring two-year-old colt trotters, the First Lady’s Cup featuring two-yearold filly trotters, the Lt. Governor’s Cup featuring 2-year-old filly pacers and the Director’s Cup featuring two-year-old colt pacers, will see their purses increased by $25,000 each. “These horses represent the first generation of foals born after legislation was signed by Governor Pritzker providing revenue streams to enhance the horse racing industry,” said IDOA Director Jerry Costello. “To be able to increase the purses for these races truly showcases the prioritized investment and commitment this administration and IDOA have in our state’s horse racing industry.” Du Quoin has a storied history with harness racing dating back to its inception by William R. “W.R.”
