Florence Community Services Activity Guide

Summer in Florence is one of my favorite times of the year! Now, I know what you might be thinking—has the heat gotten to me? But hear me out. While the temperatures rise, our Community Services team turns up the fun with an exciting lineup of programs, activities, and events designed to help you and your family make the most of the season.

Inside this Activity Guide, you’ll find plenty of ways to stay active, cool off, and explore new interests. Whether it’s diving into a good book at the Viney Jones Library, splashing around at the Florence Aquatic Center, or getting creative at one of our summer programs, we’ve got something for everyone.

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store this summer:

Library Adventures: This year’s Summer Reading Program theme is “Color Our World,” packed with vibrant, art-inspired activities for all ages. Join us for a season of creativity, storytelling, and hands-on fun—kicking off May 30!

REC Club Summer Intersession: Need a great way to keep the kids engaged? Our REC Club offers games, activities, and plenty of summer excitement at the Viney Jones Library

& Community Center. Spots fill up fast, so register early!

Make a Splash: The Florence Aquatic Center opens May 23, featuring open swim, youth swim lessons, and our Jr. Lifeguard program for teens. And don’t forget to mark your calendar for our July 4th Pool Party & Freedom Fest—a celebration with live music, games, and fireworks!

Outdoor Fun: Beat the heat with an early morning hike at Poston Butte Preserve or enjoy a shaded picnic at one of our many parks. Remember to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen!

The mission of the Florence Community Services Department is to provide our community with exceptional experiences that create lasting memories.

Vision Statement

The Town of Florence, Arizona has a rich and diverse history while serving as the county seat for Pinal County. Florence’s Community Services Department recognizes the Town’s heritage and emergence as a regional leader, and embraces our role in providing quality of life experiences for our citizens and visitors. We will continue to provide quality, affordable programming and events, as well as picture perfect parks and other park and recreation facilities. The Department will provide complete recreation centers, new and expanded parks, and safe, developed trails. Community Services will continue to be a major partner in tourism opportunities as well as economic and cultural prospects.

General Information

Municipal Volunteer Program (MVP): The Town of Florence offers a variety of volunteer opportunities to the public. Community Volunteers can contribute their energy, talents, and ideas, which improve the quality of life in Florence. If you are interested in volunteering with the Town of Florence, visit www.FlorenceAZ.gov/MVP

Durable Medical Equipment Loan Program:

The Durable Medical Equipment Loan Program provides mobility equipment on a temporary basis. The program, includes wheelchairs, rolling walkers, and other similar equipment. Users will sign a waiver before the requested equipment is issued. Individuals interested in borrowing medical equipment may call the Community Center at (520) 868-7040 to check on equipment availability.

Sponsorship: By taking advantage of sponsorship opportunities your business or organization will be able to maximize exposure to the residents of Florence and show community support. With a variety of sponsorship options available, there is sure to be an option that is right for your business. For sponsorship package details and fee information, contact Erasmo Mendivil at (520) 868-7586.

Give-A-Lift, Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Do you need a ride to your medical appointments? If you are a Florence resident, aged 55+, or a person with a disability, call to request a ride from one of our amazing volunteer drivers. This is not an emergency transportation service. Please allow at least 2 weeks to schedule a ride. Interested in being a volunteer driver? Here’s what you need: a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, and background check clearance. Youth Scholarship Program: The Youth Scholarship Program assists eligible Florence families by providing financial assistance to youth, 17 years and under. The scholarship program is applicable for only Florence Community Services recreation and aquatics programs which require fee payment. Scholarship financial assistance is $200 maximum, per family per fiscal year. Eligibility and assistance are based on Federal Poverty Level Guidelines. The Program Fee Assistance Application is available at the Library and Community Center, 778 N. Main St.,

or online at www.florenceaz.gov/parks. Applicants must submit a completed program registration form, financial documentation, and the Program Fee Assistance Application to the Community Center.

Americans with Disabilities Act: The Town of Florence is committed to implementing the intent and spirit of ADA legislation. Those who may need assistance in order to enjoy our programs should email adacoordinator@florenceaz.gov. Please provide at least a 72-hour notice with any special requests. Additional time is appreciated due to Florence’s rural location.

Online Registration

How do I get started? To get started, simply visit florenceaz.gov/parks-and-recreation and open an account. You will be asked to set up a unique Login Name and Password. This account can be used for all members of your household. If you already have a Login Name and Password, please click on the My Account button and sign in. You will be able to access account information, such as your daily schedule, past receipts, prior transactions, and much more.

If I register online, will I know if I get into a program right away? Yes, the registrations are in “real-time.” If a program has an opening, when you complete your registration you will be registered, and you will receive confirmation that your registration has been received. If a program is closed, you will be able to sign up online to be on the waitlist.

How do I know what programs are available online? When browsing programs online, registration availability will be indicated.

Verification of Residency: Residents live or own property in the Town of Florence. All others are non-residents.

Payment Options: We accept cash, checks, Visa, Discover and MasterCard payments.

Waitlist: If you are placed on a waitlist for a course or activity, there is no immediate payment taken. If a spot becomes available you will be notified to come in and pay the required activity fee.

Refund: Allow 10-15 business days for a check refund. Debit and Credit Card payments are refunded back to the card used in the original transaction.

Program Refund Policies

Withdrawal Policy

• Withdrawal requests will only be considered at least five business days before the course start date, except for medical reasons (See Medical Transfer Request).

• Approved withdrawals will be refunded using one of the methods listed in the Course Refund Policy. Convenience charges paid online will not be reimbursed.

• Refunds will not be considered once classes have started, except for medical reasons (See Medical Withdrawal and Medical Transfer Request)

Transfer Requests

• Transfer requests will only be considered if received at least five business days before the course start date, except for medical reasons (See Medical Transfer Request).

• Requested transfer classes must have open availability.

• If the transfer course request in not available and the participant chooses to withdraw, the request is subject to the withdrawal policy.

Medical Withdrawal and Medical Transfer Request

• Written documentation from a physician’s office must accompany the Withdrawal or Transfer request.

• The request must be received within 72 hours of the first missed class.

• Refunds will be prorated if the withdrawal is on or after the course start date. Convenience charges paid online will not be reimbursed.

Course Refund Policy

Approved withdrawal participants will be refunded by one of the following:

• Credit Card/Debit Card used to make the purchase

• Check: All check refunds take approximately 6-7 weeks processing by the Town of Florence and are made out and mailed to the main contact of the account.

Convenience charges paid online will not be reimbursed.

Refunds will not be considered once classes have started, except for medical reasons (See Medical Withdrawal and Medical Transfer Request)

Facility Reservation Cancellation Policies

Cancellations due to unforeseen weather conditions that make it impossible to utilize our facilities will be offered a partial refund or the option to change the date/facility. These requests must be made within three business days with a member of the Florence Community Services staff.

If the permittee chooses to cancel or move their reservation for any other reason, a request for a partial refund or change of date/facility must be made at least 10 business days prior to the facility rental date for the request to be granted. All partial refunds granted will be minus 20% or $10 (whichever is greater).

Cancellations

Some programs require a minimum number of participants and are subject to cancellation. Those who are registered will be contacted and provided a refund if this occurs.

Fourth of July freedom fest

Kick off your Fourth of July at the Aquatic Center, then join us at Heritage Park for a full day of fun and festivities! Test your skills in the cornhole tournament, enjoy inflatables and delicious eats from local food vendors, and get ready for the First Annual Rib Eating Contest in partnership with Your Behind BBQ! The celebration continues with live music from a DJ and band, all leading up to a spectacular fireworks show to cap off the night!

Florence Makes a Difference Day includes various projects throughout the community for volunteers to participate in. Participants will assist with items such as cleaning, painting, picking up trash, digging, planting etc.

Kickoff Meeting: Tuesday, October 14th at 5:30 p.m. at the Community Center

First 200 volunteers registered by September 12th are guaranteed a “I Florence” shirt!

Discovery Club

Anthem and Florence

Discovery Club is a safe and fun environment for kindergarten to 6th-grade children to enjoy before and after school. Our morning session is a safe space for children to enjoy on campus before school starts. The Afternoon session focuses on providing our youth with learning experiences that teach practical skills and creativity in the subject areas listed below.

Summer Intersession Program

Community Center

The Summer Intersession Program provides a fun, safe, stimulating place for children to enjoy during the day over Florence Unified School District’s Summer Break. This program has rotating morning classes and activities that include sports, games, arts & crafts, STEM activities, cooking, and more. On scheduled afternoons, eligible participants will take in-town field trips.

Registration: Spots are limited and on a first come first served basis. This program may fill. Please register your child to secure their place in the program. NO DROP IN OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE DURING INTERSESSION.

Food/Drinks: Summer Food Service Program will provide free summer meals for breakfast and lunch! Meals must be consumed on site. Please make sure your child has a water bottle with their name on it and provide one (1) afternoon snack if you anticipate your child attending the full day.

Transportation: is available for residents in the Anthem area to and from the Community Center. * available for up to the first ten residents that sign up.

Pick Up / Drop Off:

Anthem pick-up and drop-off will be located at the Anthem K-8 parking lot. Bus will arrive at 7:15 a.m. and remain on site until 8:00 a.m. Return bus will depart the Viney Jones Library and Community Center at 5:00 p.m. and remain until 5:30 p.m. All children must be picked up by 5:30 p.m.

Summer Intersession will not be hosted on the following observed holidays: Monday, May 26th - Memorial Day Thursday, June 19th - Juneteenth Friday, July 4th - Independence Day

PINAL COUNTY Graduation Sections

JR NBA Youth Basketball League

Florence High School Practice Gym

Jr NBA Youth Basketball League will offer youth the opportunity to participate and enjoy a recreational experience in an instructional and fun setting. Emphasis will be placed on participation, character development, good sportsmanship, and fun. Games will be played on Mondays and Wednesdays with practices taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Practice times are determined by the volunteer coach. Practices may be once or twice a week, with one guaranteed indoor practice at the Florence High School gym, starting at 6:00 p.m.

Registration reminders:

• Due to the large interest in youth sports leagues and the limited availability, we ask interested participants to please ensure that they are able to attend 90% of this program before registering. There will be no refunds outside of the parameters of the Town of Florence Community Services Refund Policy Agreement.

• Volunteer Coaches and Referees are strongly needed for the successful operation of this program.

• If there are enough registered participants in the oldest division to separate the boys and girls into their own division, the Recreation Coordinator reserves the right to divide that age group. (Keep in mind when registering, this will separate siblings in the same division.)

• Team and Coach requests will no longer be accepted under any circumstances.

• Volunteer coaches and their child, or registered siblings in the same division are guaranteed to be assigned to the same team.

YOUTH SPORTS

JR NFL Flag League Ballfields

Recreational youth flag football league, a fun accessible non-contact program available to boys and girls ages 5 to 13. In this league, kids will learn the fundamentals of running, catching, throwing, and teamwork. Emphasis will placed on participation, character development, and good sportsmanship.

Games: Tuesday & Thursday

Practice: Monday & Wednesday

Practice time are determined by the volunteer coach.

This innovative and learner-focused curriculum uses an “ages and stages” format so that you can offer swim lessons across the lifespan to a broad range of interests. You choose the programs that are best suited to your situation and needs. Please use our placement guide to help place students over the age of 3.

Sharks Swim Team

Aquatic Center

Recreation swim team that competes in the Central Arizona Swim League.

• Travel required outside of Florence

• Participants must swim a full 25 meters comfortably to be on the team (Safety Purposes)

• Practice twice a week with swim meets held on Saturday’s

• Volunteer will be needed for home swim meets

• T-shirt included with registration fee

• Optional uniform/swimsuit for participants at a separate fee

Summer Safety & Family Resource Day

This event will kick off the 2025 season at the Florence Aquatic Center. Families are invited to attend, learn more about the aquatic programs available this season, and register for their favorites. Health and family resource vendors will also be onsite for additional support.

Every Friday night this summer, join us from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for a funfilled evening of swimming and family bonding. Cool off, make lasting memories, and enjoy the summer vibes. General admission applies for entry.

Freedom Fest Pool Party Aquatic Center

Kick off your Freedom Fest day at the Florence Aquatic Center with open swim, music, and games throughout the day!

This is a FREE event, but with limited capacity, so be sure to arrive early.

Lap Swim Aquatic Center

Lap swimming is a highly effective workout that’s gentle on the joints, thanks to the buoyancy of the water. It also promotes a meditative state, encouraging you to focus on your movements and breathing. Whether you’re training for competition or just looking to improve your skills, lap swimming offers a great way to enhance your fitness.

* Lap swim will be available during open swim hours only

* One lap lane will be available for use (you may be asked to share the lane)

* General admission is required

Junior Lifeguard 13yrs - 15yrs Aquatic Center

If you are 13 to 15 years old and are interested in becoming a lifeguard in the future, these classes will expose you to a variety of guarding skills.

Experience may include assisting with swim lessons, lifeguard surveillance, special events, customer service skills, and safety rules/regulations. Pool Volunteer opportunities exist for Junior Lifeguards after the class ends, which are not mandatory, but are encouraged.

*Requirements: Ability to swim at least a 100 freestyle, a 100 breaststroke and 100 of either stroke

*Jr Lifeguard will mainly take place during swim lesson hours, but times will vary

Teen Night at the Aquatic Center Aquatic Center

Hey Teens, come join us for our two TEEN ONLY events this summer at the Florence Aquatic Center!!! These events will be held once a month throughout the summer. Summer Kickoff 2025 and End of Summer Jam will give you a chance to make lasting memories with your friends. There will be music and activities for all to enjoy.

Mat Pilates is a low-impact, full-body workout that strengthens core muscles, improves flexibility, and enhances posture. This class focuses on controlled movements, breathing techniques, and proper alignment to develop core strength and improve overall balance and stability. It is suitable for all fitness levels.

Florence K-8 Gym

Missoula Children’s Theatre tour shows are designed for students entering 1st grade through 12th grade during the summer tour. We’ll cast approximately 60 students and up to four assistant directors. Open Auditions will take place on Monday, July 7th, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. held at the Florence K-8 Gym. No advanced preparation will be needed for auditions. Once participants get their roles, rehearsals will follow.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre takes pride in presenting The Snow Queen, an original adaptation of Michael McGill. Although set in a “land of colored ice,” this classic tale will warm your heart in its illustrative retelling by a group of funloving, imaginative hobgoblins. As they depict the journey of a young girl and her quest to find her best friend, you may just find yourself believing in malevolent mirrors, yetis, talking reindeer, and snow chickens! Blizzards can come at any moment, so strap on some snowshoes and get ready to discover what it takes to overcome chilling obstacles, keep resilience alive, and melt down the Snow Queen’s icy walls.
