A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Summertime Fun Being a Florence native, participating in all the great programs the Town has always offered, and now having the best job ever as a Community Services Director, it is fun to reflect on how programs and events have evolved over the years. Summers as a kid in Florence consisted of swim team practice, hours of open swim, the summer rec club, little league, fun with friends, and lots of family BBQs. I recall irrigation football and mud volleyball for the 4th of July, visiting the pool at Florence High School, swinging by the library, and braving the giant slide where the Senior Center now lives. Your Community Services department has been busy planning an eventful summer for all of our residents. We have several new program offerings we’re excited to share such as Nerf Wars, Cheer and Tumble, and Into to Ballet. The library is also offering many of our popular Summer Reading Programs, such as the Reading Challenge, so students can keep those literacy skills sharp over the summer break. This year’s theme is “Oceans of Possibilities”; so be sure to keep an eye out for all the fun activities scheduled. Join us at the Aquatic Center Saturday, May 28th, for Summer Safety and Family Resource Day and get registered for all the summer programming you’re interested in at once. Keep an eye out for all the delicious meals hosted at the Senior Center and be sure to

The mission of the Florence Community Services Department is to provide programs, services and facilities that enrich the quality of life for all residents.

The Town of Florence, Arizona has a rich and diverse history while serving as the county seat for Pinal County. Florence’s Community Services Department recognizes the Town’s heritage and emergence as a regional leader, and embraces our role in providing quality of life experiences for our citizens and visitors. We will continue to provide quality, affordable programming and events, as well as picture perfect parks and other park and recreation facilities. The Department will provide complete recreation centers, new and expanded parks and safe, developed trails. General Information

Volunteering: The Town of Florence offers a variety of volunteer opportunities to the public. Community Volunteers can contribute their energy, talents and ideas, which improves the quality of life in Florence. If you are interested in volunteering with the Town of Florence, contact the Community Services Department (520) 868-7040. Durable Medical Equipment Loan Program: The Durable Medical Equipment Loan Program provides mobility equipment on a temporary basis. The program, offered by the recreation division of Florence Community Services includes wheelchairs, rolling walkers and other similar equipment. This unique program is possible through a partnership with Florence Gardens to loan medical equipment to citizens and visitors. Users will sign a waiver before the requested equipment is issued. Individuals interested in borrowing medical equipment, may call the Community Center at (520) 868-7040 to check on equipment availability. Sponsorship: By taking advantage of sponsorship opportunities your business or organization will be able to maximize exposure to the residents of Florence and show community support. With a variety of sponsorship options available, there is sure to be an option that is right for your business. For sponsorship package details and fee information, contact Alicia Marrufo at (520) 868-7699. Give-A-Lift, Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Do you need a ride to your medical appointments? If you are a Florence resident, aged 55+, or a person with a disability, call to request a ride 4

from on of our amazing volunteer drivers. This is not an emergency transportation service. Please allow at least 2 weeks for scheduling a ride. Interested in being a volunteer driver? Here’s what you need: a clean and safe vehicle, good driving record, valid driver’s license, auto insurance coverage, and background check clearance. To schedule a ride, sign up to volunteer, or obtain information, contact Carolyn Ballard by phone at (520) 868-7648, or email at carolyn.ballard@florenceaz.gov. Youth Scholarship Program: The Youth Scholarship Program assists eligible Florence families by providing financial assistance to youth, 17 years and under. The scholarship program is only applicable for Florence Community Services recreation and aquatics programs which require fee payment. Scholarship financial assistance is $200 maximum, per family per fiscal year. Eligibility and assistance are based on Federal Poverty Level Guidelines. The Program Fee Assistance Application is available at the Library and Community Center, 778 N. Main St. or on-line at www.florenceaz.gov/parks. Applicants must submit a completed program registration form, financial documentation and the Program Fee Assistance Application to the Community Center. Americans with Disabilities Act: The Town of Florence is committed to implementing the intent and spirit of ADA legislation. Those who may need assistance in order to enjoy our programs should contact the appropriate program director or the main Community Services office so we may arrange for assistance.

How do I get started? To get started, simply visit: florenceaz.gov/parks-and-recreation and open an account. You will be asked to set up a unique Login Name and Password. This account can be used for all members of your household. If you already have a Login Name and Password, please click on the My Account button and sign in. You will be able to access account information, such as your daily schedule, past receipts, prior transactions and much more. If I register on-line, will I know if I get into a program right away? Yes, the registrations are in “real-time”. If a program has an opening when you complete your registration, you will be registered, and you will receive confirmation that your registration has been received. If a program is closed, you will be able to sign up on-line to be on the wait-list.

Wait-list: If you are placed on a waitlist for a course or activity, there is no immediate payment taken. If a spot becomes available you will be notified to come in and pay the required activity fee. Refund: If a class is canceled you will receive a full refund. Allow 10 business days for a refund check. All payments made by Visa, Discover, or MasterCard will be refunded to your credit card account.

Cancellations

Some programs require a minimum number of participants and are subject to cancellation. Those who are registered will be contacted and provided a refund if this occurs.

Florence Aquatic Center Level 1: Helps students feel comfortable in the water. Level 1 participants learn to: fully submerge face in water, front and back float with support, kicking on front and back with support, and enter and exit the water. Level 2: Gives students independent success with fundamental skills. Level 2 participants learn to: float on front and back unsupported for five seconds, swim on back five yards without assistance, and retrieve objects under water chest deep.

Parent Child: This class is for children 6 months to 5 years of age who are not yet ready to be in swim lessons without a parent. The programs builds swimming readiness while emphasizing fun in the water. Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including bubble blowing, front and back kicking, floating and experience underwater exploration. Pre-School Aquatics: Designed to orient young preschoolers to the aquatic environment and to help them gain basic aquatic skills. In addition, participants start learning about how to be safe around water. Adaptive Swim Lessons: Participants will learn to: fully submerge face in water, front and back float with support, kicking on front and back with support, water safety, and enter and exit the water.

Lifeguard Certification course is required in order to be a lifeguard and is a prerequisite for the Water Safety Instructor (W.S.I.) course. The course is an additional certification to teach swim lessons following American Red Cross Guidelines. Lifeguard Re-Certification course is for participants whose two year certification has expired. 5

REGISTER R.E.C. Club provides a fun, safe, stimulating place for children to enjoy over the Florence Unified School Districts Summer Break. The R.E.C. Club will have rotating morning classes, activities include sports, games, arts and crafts, STEM activities, cooking, and so much more. In the afternoons on scheduled days, the R.E.C. Club will take in-town field trips to the Florence Aquatic Center and the Dorothy Nolan Senior Center.

Transportation is available for residents in the Anthem area to and from the R.E.C. Club. Anthem pick-up and drop-off will be located at the Anthem K-8 parking lot. Bus will arrive at 7:15 a.m. and remain on site until 8:00 a.m. Return bus will depart R.E.C. club at 5:00 p.m. and remain at Anthem K-8 until 5:30 p.m. All children must be picked up by 5:30 p.m. Week

Missoula Children’s Theatre

Keep an eye out for more information regarding the Missoula Children’s Theatre coming to Florence this Summer! What is Missoula Children’s Theatre? Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT), is designed for students Kindergarten through 12th grade. A tour team arrives in town in their “little red truck” loaded with a set, lights, costumes, props and make-up, everything it takes to put on a play except the cast. The team holds an open audition and casts 50-60 local students to perform in the production. This show is rehearsed throughout the week and two public performances are presented at the end of the week. The cast for the Florence program will perform Red Riding Hood. 18

LIBRARY EVENTS Summer Reading at Your Library – “OCEANS OF POSSIBILITIES” Library and Community Center

The Florence Community Library offers a yearly Summer Reading Program. The theme this year is “Oceans of Possibilities”, Join us this summer to avoid the summer slide and keep those literacy skills sharp and in focus. Youth and adults are encouraged to participate in our Summer Reading Challenge weekly and are welcome to submit reading logs to compete for Top Reader prizes. The Program runs May 31- July 8.
