PILOT SUMMARY

Autonomous Campus Shuttle Velodyne Lidar PilotCity: Other Pilot Manager: Chloe Enkhbayar, Gabriel Melgar, Riya , Pilotcity Report Date: 9/19/2019

Stage: Completed

Final Evaluation Other We didn't meet all of our goals because we committed to an unfeasible prototype idea which made it hard to use to gather data from UC Berkeley.

Pilot Description Velodyne’s Lidar (Light Detection and ranging) is a system that shoots out billions of photons in 360 degrees calculating the distance and time to an object creating a 3D map of the environment. Using LIDAR, we plan on creating an autonomous, battery/solar powered shuttle that follows a specific route around campus giving students (including disabled students) the opportunity to quickly travel around UC Berkeley campus during the school day.

Goals RESULT

GOAL

Unmet

1. Gather at least 100 student responses at UC Berkeley and/or other Universities that are large enough to need a shuttle to determine a need.

Met

2. Get in contact with UC Berkeley and other UCs, to get them as a client or interested prospect and showcase the prototype.

Unmet

4

3. Develop a minimal data gathering prototype to map out the Berkeley campus by July 26th.

PILOT SUMMARY

Clean Water Assessment for Cities & Communities DJI Water PilotCity: Other Pilot Manager: Pilotcity Report Date: 9/19/2019

Stage: Evaluating

Pilot Description Water is a basic necessity. Despite this, humans have continued to compromise the quality of their water for economic or social gains. Without a comprehensive knowledge of their impacts on lakes, rivers, and reservoirs, people have begun to take their most precious resource for advantage. In order to solve this issue, DJI Water plans to utilize drones and remote sensing software to create comprehensive research reports which present findings about a specific body of water over time. Drones have the ability to take accurate images of water which can track algal growth and color change in bodies of water, as well as the ability to monitor heat flow. On the other hand, IoT can be used to measure changes in water, including pH and temperature. The data collected will then be used to create detailed reports, which can be used to create step-by-step plans to conserve and clean the bodies of water we researched.

Drones for Sidewalk Maintenance in Hayward Sidewalk Maintenance PilotCity: Public Works Pilot Manager: Lizzeth Chamu, Kyara , Pilotcity Report Date: 9/19/2019

Stage: Completed

Final Evaluation Pilot Description The problem that our project tackles is damaged sidewalks. Damaged sidewalks are problematic because it is an unsafe way for people to commute and it can cause people to be injured. Therefore, we developed a plan to use a drone to locate and take pictures of areas that require sidewalk maintenance. The drone would fly around 5 blocks in the City of Hayward to locate the sidewalks that have problems such as Hesperian Blvd. From that, we'll use a special software (DroneDeploy) to make measurements and create 3D images of the sidewalks.

PILOT SUMMARY

Drones for Tra c Intersection Assessment Intersection Problem PilotCity: Other Pilot Manager: Kerwin Shi, Katy Tien, Pilotcity Report Date: 9/19/2019

Stage: Tracking

Pilot Description The Intersection Problem is a project based on observing the a Decoto intersection in Fremont, California. Our observation using drones found that timing issues with the traffic lights creates traffic jams on the middle of the intersection. Currently in the event of high car congestion, backups occur on the road that goes through Decoto Road. This causes stuck cars to extend into the intersection. As a result, this causes cars on Decoto road to get blocked, and therefore, stuck in traffic. The goal is to utilize drones to assist us in planning and pushing for road fixes within Fremont. Drones will be used to provide traffic footage to help in determining the route of the problem, and can also be used to create 3D models to help in prototype planning. Furthermore, the surrounding community’s opinion, in the form of data collected from surveys, will also be utilized to support the project. The plan is to take this project to the city of Fremont and propose the problem that plagues the intersection, and our prototype to help fix it. We plan to take the project further by expanding boundaries by looking at other intersections and gaining the support of many other cities.

45

Goals 1. [Short-Term] Make and execute a working prototype of the solved intersection in the time frame of one month.

2. [Short-Term] Gain Fremont's support of our prototype in the time frame of one month. [Long Term] Gain one or two more clients (cities) to work with us and support our project.

3. [Short-Term] Develop a solution that effectively decreases the chance of a traffic jam from occurring.

4. [Short-Term] Gain one surrounding community's support of proposed intersection.

PILOT SUMMARY

IgniDrone: Fire-Resistant Drone for Public Safety Pilot City PilotCity: Other Pilot Manager: Hannah Zhu, Ishani Gupta, Ishaan Gupta, Srika Chagarlamudi, Jonathan Wu, Pilotcity Report Date: 9/19/2019

Stage: Completed

Final Evaluation Continue to a full RFP We want to continue with this project and expand it into a business.

Pilot Description We will develop a fire-resistant drone which will be used to fly in and out of fires to deliver materials to civilians in fires including filtration masks and fire blankets. The drone will be encased in aerogel cloth to make it fireproof. Aerogel is essentially a material that is extremely lightweight and has an extremely high melting point. This will allow the inside to remain a cooler temperature than its surroundings. The propellers will be made of carbon fiber, which will allow them to resist heat up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. This product will be directed towards fire departments (Fremont first then Alameda County after we have a proof of concept) to help them.

Goals RESULT

GOAL

Met

1. Do a test run (testing to see if the aerogel and carbon fiber will properly fireproof the drone)

Unmet

2. Create a functional prototype (be fireproof, deliver materials - 5lbs) that would be able to help people in fires and the fire department by the end of this program

PILOT SUMMARY

PowerSink: Sink Turbine for Clean Energy Sink Turbine PilotCity: Other Pilot Manager: Kenneth Thai, Pilotcity Report Date: 9/19/2019

Stage: Tracking

Pilot Description The issue of climate change is demanding our world for more sources of green energy as the current ones are not outputting enough to sustain the amount of people living on this planet. In addition, with the high volume of waste water flowing under homes on daily basis, the possibilities of clogs and damage to piping is high as well as the risk is to littering. My product consists of a filter with a disposable tray for cleaning along with a downscaled hydroelectric turbine that would be able to prevent debris from damaging or clogging piping. The turbine itself would be able to use the flow of water to act as a dam and output some electricity that could power a small device within a home. Though the output of electricity would be small, there usually are multiple sinks within a home, so the impact would be significant in terms of where homes pull energy from. Compared to another generic sink filter, this product would not be in the way since it is being placed under your sink instead of inside your actual sink where it could move around or get caught in. On the other hand, when comparing this project to other sources of green electricity, it is obscure compared to solar panels and windmills for say but would also be more convenient to install and purchase for potential customers. Intended customers would be home developers and also homeowners that would have a professional come to their home to install.

71

Goals 1. Have a prototype that can filter waste water efficiently and also generate usable amount of electricity.

2. Reduce amount of clogging in pipes and water pollution due to trash.

3. Determine the viability of a miniature hydroelectric turbine and its effectiveness with the water flowing down a sink.

4. Have at least 20 prototype testers by end of 6 weeks.

Tell us about your product or service My product and service is an object consisting of a cone-shaped filter and a miniature hydroelectric turbine. The product would be placed under a sink somewhere within your pipeline heading towards the sewer. The filter would prevent debris from clogging piping and damaging the turbine. The turbine acts as a down-scaled dam and uses the flow of water within your pipes to generate electricity that can power a small device.

Please describe the impact of your proposed product or service With my product, the amount of clogged and damaged pipelines due to debris flowing down your sink would decrease. In addition, the amount of litter and trash going into sewers and our water will also decrease. My product would create a new course of green energy that is more convenient and affordable to install and use within a home.

Rush QR Code: Expediting Off-Campus Lunch Crowds Typeform restaurant PilotCity: Other Pilot Manager: Katrina Castro, Kristen Chan, Alexis Quan, Pilotcity Report Date: 9/16/2019

Stage: Completed

Final Evaluation Continue to a full RFP We will be waiting for the start of school to begin the test run of RUSH. Then we will be able to measure our goals of efficiency, lines, customer satisfaction, and audience better.

Pilot Description Long lines out your business preventing you from maximizing your business during lunch hour? RUSH is the solution for you -maximizing the efficiency of your business by enabling your customers to pre-order their meal. Alameda High's students consistently pile up at your business, and because of these long lines some resort to going to other businesses to get their lunch in the short lunch break they have. However, with the ability to pre-order their meal with RUSH, your business can maximize all customer profits by reducing wait times and lines.

80

Goals RESULT

GOAL

Unmet

1. EFFICIENCY: Increase restaurant efficiency by 20% Measure how many customers the business is able to accommodate, then the number of customers the business is able to accommodate after RUSH is implemented.

Met

2. AUDIENCE: Increase customer base by 10% Rush's increased efficiency of the business will draw more customers as they will be able to receive their order in an efficient time frame, as they won't have to waste time waiting in line.

Unmet

3. LINES: Decrease line wait time by 20% Because their orders will be made by the time the customer gets there, the line will be significantly decreased. This decreased wait time in line will account for those whose order is already ready because they pre-ordered with RUSH, those in line whose RUSH order is not ready yet, and those who are ordering without RUSH (the standard way).

Unmet

4. CUSTOMER SATISFACTION: Increase customer satisfaction by 20% Measure customer satisfaction on a scale of 1-5 before implementing RUSH and measuring customer satisfaction on the same scale after implementing RUSH.

Cost Analysis Because we are incorporating the API, our costs would be cut down to only the production of the QR codes, reducing our budget to <$100. Initially we will start by simply printing copies of the QR code and pasting them around the street and school, but however implementing the QR code onto restaurants' business cards could be an alternative option.

Untracked

07/23/2019

Create and Release Community Survey Our community survey validated our claims regarding the difficulties of our lunch. In addition, it gave us the top three businesses, which were Lola’s, Kobe Ya, then Poke Koma. In the survey, we asked students whether they were more likely to go to restaurants that have student specials, to which over 90% responded yes. This is reflected in our data, as our #2, Kobe Ya, consistently has a line for their student specials. However, our #1 and #3 both sell their sides to students, which are obviously at a cheap price, but with the data, it would conclude that if they advertised these sides as student specials they would gain even more revenue without changing the price.

Completed

07/25/2019

Create and Test Run Rush While developing our service we tested all combinations to test its user satisfaction. The development of this service was slightly difficult because of our decision to allow the customer to buy more than one type of item. Many students buy meals for people other than themselves, which is why we decided to include this feature. Making the Rush application for these businesses would be substantially easier if it only provided the option to only allow the customer to purchase only one type of item, but because our service is focused on the idea of convenience, we thought it was in its best interest to include this feature.

Completed

07/29/2019

Approach Businesses The businesses seemed very perceptive to our service. The main concern was the cost for the businesses to be able to use the app, how the businesses would be able to receive the orders, as well as Kobe Ya questioning the

82

benefits of using our service. As we continued developing Rush, we concluded that at least for the initial implementation of our app, it would be at no cost to the businesses, but later we would take maybe 10% of their revenue, which amounts to the roughly the tax that the customer would pay. We aren't completely sold on this idea, but it would be up to the business as well as any other ideas others have as to how we would make money from this application. The businesses would be able to receive orders through their Square app, which they already have installed, which allows there to be no surcharge for an implementation, as well as adding ease to the businesses' function of their establishment. In regards to Kobe Ya, we were able to explain to them that the service would be bringing them more revenue, which seemed to intrigue them. Completed

08/09/2019

Expand to Other Businesses Because these businesses used the platform Square to take orders and payments, we had to find a way to link Typeform and Square together. Doing a little research, we found an interface called Zapier that allowed orders from Typeform to go to a business's Square.

Tell us about your product or service A survey software for restaurants that allows high school students to order early via QR code that leads them to a Typeform ordering survey. The QR code will be accessible on cards you can get from the restaurant, or posted on printed flyers around school. With this QR code system, students will easily be able to preorder, prepay, and schedule a pick up time early on to avoid long lines and wait times. In the future, RUSH will become an app that will feature all the participating businesses and their Typeform surveys. Student reviews on student specials will also be available on the appto bring more awareness to the variety of student lunch specials around Alameda High.

Please describe the impact of your proposed product or service

89

With a scan of a QR code across the halls of school, students can easily schedule and pay for their order ahead of time. With the use of QR codes and Typeform, businesses will not only be able to reduce long lines but also take on additional customer orders. Many businesses around Alameda High begin preparing student lunches early, but because they do not know how many or what students will order that day, they end up wasting a lot of food. With Rush, we will be able to eliminate that food waste since businesses will have the student's order ahead of time.

Please give a brief description of your proposed pilot We will create QR code linking to a Typeform survey that high school students can easily preorder and prepay on. The student orders will automatically print (through Square), allowing restaurants to start preparing their orders ahead of time.

PILOT SUMMARY

Seamless Schools: Autonomous Shuttle for Passing Periods Team LiDAR PilotCity: Other Pilot Manager: Tatiana Lopez, Tyler Gonzaga, Evan Morris, Antonio Loza, Pilotcity Report Date: 9/19/2019

Stage: Tracking

Pilot Description LiDAR is an up-and-coming technology that uses laser lights to pinpoint objects in the real world at real time speed. LiDAR is used in many things such as land surveying and aerial mapping, but it's also used in autonomous vehicles. The LiDAR itself acts as the eyes of a car by mapping it’s surroundings and being able to communicate this information to the computer controlling the car via machine learning. All of this is combined with an eco-friendly electric car to promote sustainability and the advancement of modern technology. Our grand idea is to develop an autonomous shuttling system that would allow students in the city of Antioch to traverse the two high schools, being Antioch High School and Deer Valley High School, without worrying about bothering parents, relatives, etc. for a ride. If we were to spread awareness of the safety of this new technology, we really hope to get the shuttle system out there. There's different classes at both schools and have sets of completely different academies which have a wide range of opportunities they offer. Some students might not necessarily have the chance to get those opportunities because of being bound to certain schools based on their home address. With the shuttling system active, it can change everything by having students transfer school to school without having to worry about being late. To develop our minimum viable product, we are going to be building an RC car that uses LiDAR. This will serve as our prototype showing how it works and how safely it can operate.

91

Goals 1. Research for new ideas and problems that LiDAR can also solve and ways we can implement LiDAR into other things after we are done with the busing system into the future.

2. Put together prior knowledge of other LiDAR based projects and brainstorm ways to make a prototype.

3. Hold a community survey for student's and other people's opinion.

4. Have an RC car with LiDAR attached for data collection.

5. Create presentations to pitch and have even more demos to show people who are interested in LiDAR.

Final Evaluation Discontinue relationship with vendor for this initiative :(

Pilot Description MESH Terra plans to utilize MESH technology to make pet care more efficient and easy. The different sensors would be able to play a role in satisfying pet needs and alerting their owners or potentially setting up mechanics to fully automate the tanks. when something is wrong or needs to be changed. Aquatic , amphibian, reptilian are the three main types of tank sheltered animals that this can be applied to . The main blocks being used are: - Brightness + Motion : track circadian rhythm and regulate lighting - Temp and humidity : regulate heat lamp as well as water circulation/ level it will also serve as a thermometer - GPIO: connects to any of the additions needed, such as a water pump or a heat lamp

PILOT SUMMARY

Trash Hotspot Detection in National Parks DJI PilotCity: Other Pilot Manager: Rahaf Mohammed, Pilotcity Report Date: 9/19/2019

Stage: Completed

Final Evaluation Pilot Description This project involves using a drone and an AI software called Picterra. Picterra is a software that can detect and count objects on drone or satellite imagery. Drones are great tools for allowing versatility in mapping terrain. The Garbage Search Engine is a tool park cleaners and AI software companies can use to make their jobs easier. The Garbage Search Engine uses drone imagery to count and detect trash hotspots that are hard to identify in person and gives a rough estimation on how much trash is in the area. With this data, park cleaners can easily find those areas and send workers accordingly. AI software companies like Picterra can use the litter detector in future for other projects and for GIS and remote sensing experts.

PILOT SUMMARY

Vape Alarm for School Bathrooms Sony Mesh PilotCity: Other Pilot Manager: Dylan Layden, Pilotcity Report Date: 9/19/2019

Stage: Completed

Final Evaluation Pilot Description My pilot is a vape alarm for schools. Many schools have a large issue with the number of students who use the bathroom to vape. Bathrooms are hidden from supervisors view so it is difficult for them to prevent students from vaping. My product detects change in humidity and sounds an alarm which will make it uncomfortable to remain in the bathrooms after vaping. After 30 seconds if the humidity has not continued to increase the alarm will turn off. This will discourage vaping in school bathrooms because students will know a blaring alarm will sound if they do vape in bathrooms. Schools will be able to solve this issue without wasting their supervisors time or impacting other students by invading their privacy and inconveniencing them.

Goals RESULT

GOAL

Met

1. Create a prototype using an arduino that can detect a person vaping in a closed room within 15 seconds.
