A brighter summer with more vaccinations As Manitoba endures some of its highest daily COVID-19 case numbers of the pandemic – 587 cases on May 12 – a surge in vaccinations raises hope for some relief this summer.

Canada’s chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, announced on May 14 that Canadians who have been vaccinated with one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine can socialize with close family and friends outdoors over the summer months. However, that will depend on at least 75 per cent of all adults having had one vaccine dose and 20 per cent being fully vaccinated.

As of May 14, only 50 per cent of Canadian adults have had one shot and only 3.6 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Virtually all Canadians will have access to their first vaccine dose by June. Manitoba has now extended vaccine eligibility to children as young as 12 years old with the Pfizer vaccine.

Paid leave for COVID-19 vaccination appointments With COVID-19 vaccination eligibility now expanded to include all Manitobans 12 years and older, the Manitoba legislature voted unanimously in favour of legislation to encourage workers to get vaccinated.

Finance Minister Scott Fielding introduced the legislation that provides paid COVID-19 vaccination leave on Tuesday, May 11, and it was passed the following day by all three political parties.

Last month Marco Mendicino, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced an innovate pathway to permanent residence for over 90,000 essential workers and international graduates of Canadian institutions who are all destined to contribute to the Canadian economy. This new public policy of the minister opened to application submissions on May 6, 2021.

Eligible applicants can submit their applications through the IRCC online portal if they have either a minimum of one year of Canadian work experience in a health care profession or in another essential occupation. Or they can apply as international student graduates who completed an eligible post-secondary program of studies in Canada within the last four years and not before January 2017.

Applications will be accepted until November 5, 2021 or until the stated application caps have been met. The targets include: • 20,000 applications for temporary workers in health care • 30,000 applications for temporary workers in selected essential occupations • 40,000 applications for international students who graduated from an eligible Canadian educational institution.

“I think obviously there may be fewer people who would take up the AstraZeneca vaccine as the second dose but it is important to still have that option right now,” she said.

Employers would be able to require employees to provide them with reasonable verification of the necessity of the leave as soon as possible, but could not require a physician’s note or medical certificate to avoid an unnecessary burden on the medical system.

Employees who need more time to travel to vaccination appointments or who suffer from vaccine side effects would be allowed to take a longer unpaid leave.

“We’ve heard most employers in Manitoba are already offering paid vaccination leave to their employees, and we thank them for understanding the importance of a vaccinated workforce,” said Fielding. “We all have a role to play in protecting ourselves and our community, and we want to encourage employees and employers to do the right thing.”

COVID-19 vaccines are a triumph of science and a tool of medicine to prevent the disease; vaccination is what makes them save lives.

Health Canada has greenlighted Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID vaccine for younger adolescents 12 to 15 years of age, making Canada the first country to grant emergency use authorization for a pediatric vaccine. This is wonderful news and a milestone in the war against the pandemic.

Up until the fifth of this month, only the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, of the four authorized for emergency adult use in Canada, is also authorized for teens as young as 16 years old. On this date, Health Canada expanded the Pfizer authorization to include children 12 to 15 years of age. The efficacy is 100 per cent. It is wellaccepted and safe, and the vaccinemaker is firmly committed, “to monitor the long-term safety, efficacy and quality of the vaccine and to provide the information to Canada’s health ministry.” Five days later, the U.S. also granted its expanded authorization to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Reasons why vaccinating children against COVID-19 is crucial Even before any COVID-19 vaccine was granted emergency use authorization for adults in Canada, the U.S. and Europe, the Director of Child Health at the International Vaccine Access Center of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Dr. Anita Shet, had advanced in mid-December 2020 “five broad reasons why children should get a COVID-19 vaccine” 1. It will facilitate the development of herd immunity and, thereby, in the control of the pandemic since children constitute a large proportion of the population (not quite a fifth in Canada, close to a quarter in Canada and the U.S., and a little over a third globally); 2. It can reduce the overall burden of the infection at home and in the community since older children and adolescents transmit the COVID virus to their contacts – to parents, grandparents, and other adults; 3. It will decrease the total burden of disease on the health care system since children, although to a lesser extent than adults, can become seriously ill and die; 4. It will save children from the devastating indirect effects of COVID-19 on their education and mental health since an increased number of them showed failing grades during the COVID-19 era of remote learning and frequent emergency department visits for mental health issues; and 5. It will ensure children would be treated fairly as adults, that is, receive the benefits of

vaccines as well as contribute to their clinical trials, as expressed in writing by the American Academy of Pediatrics to federal health officials, “The observation that children appear to have lower risk of severe COVID-19 disease compared with adults should not result in their exclusion from vaccine clinical research.”

Dr. Shet went on to emphasize half-a-dozen well known observations in pediatric clinical research: 1. “children are not ‘little adults’ – their physical, metabolic, immunological, and psychological processes are different from those of adults, (and these) often translate to children having stronger reactions such as higher fever and localized reactions; (hence,) separate safety data in children must be meticulously collected and critically studied before recommendations can be made for deployment in children; 2. “efficacy data are important to compile in different age categories (in infancy and childhood) given the differential immune responses in different ages … to identify optimal (agespecific) pediatric doses; 3. “long-term monitoring of vaccine safety within trials and in the general population is critical to building a strong safety profile of the vaccines that are to be used in children; 4. “running pediatric vaccine trials is more complicated compared to adult trials and an integrated and sustainable trials network geared towards pediatric approaches is necessary … to provide the infrastructure and rigor needed to improve the safety and efficacy of (vaccines) for children; 5. “an open channel of communication with the public with complete transparency of what is known and unknown is … needed to build vaccine confidence; and 6. “(clinical) trial enrolments should reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of the (local) and global populations … and (thereby) contribute to reducing inequities among societies.”

In support of Dr. Shet’s position, Dr. Anna Durbin (Professor) and her colleagues Drs. Ruth Karron (Respiratory Virologist and Vaccinologist), William Moss (Executive Director), and Kawsar Talaat (Assistant Professor) in the Department of International Health and the Center for Immunization Research, also at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, have more recently (February 25, 2021) indicated that “more than 10,000 children have been hospitalized with COVID-19 in the U.S. and more than three hundred children have died.” They specifically noted a serious complication of the disease in children, called Multisystem Inflammatory

With more adults now vaccinated, children now constitute about 24 per cent of new COVID-19 cases according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In Canada, approximately 20 per cent of the more than 1.2 million COVID-19 cases are in the pediatric population.

Clinical trials for a pediatric vaccine Evaluation of the PfizerBioNTech vaccine in children with respect to its safety and ability to induce the required immune response started in the U.S. sometime in October 2020. Enrolment in the clinical trial included 2,259 pediatric participants 12 to 15 years of age, half of whom received the vaccine and half a placebo, in a doubleblind design. Note that the number of participants is much smaller than the trials in adults. This is because the trial in teens was the so-called “immune bridging” technique, which is designed to test whether the vaccine triggered immune responses similar to those in adults, that is, “to expand access to vaccines that have been proved effective and safe to older populations.”

Trials were done at university medical centres under the close supervision of experienced pediatricians and their respective clinical research teams. Dr. Robert Frenck, the Director of the Gamble Center for Clinical Research at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio, observed that “children actually appear to respond better to the vaccines than younger adults. The challenge now is to find the best immune response with the lowest side effect.”

The results formed the basis for Pfizer’s application for expanded authorization. It had already included children as young as 16 years of age in its original application for emergency use. In addition to achieving the two original aims of the trial – to ascertain safety and to assess the immune response – the results also show that more children became ill in the placebo group thereby confirming the strong protection as in adults the vaccine offers.

The Moderna pediatric vaccine trial, which has enrolled up to 3,000 children and adolescents 12 to 17 years of age – also in the U.S. – expects its results and favourable application for expanded authorization sometime this summer. Its original authorization was only for adults 18 years and older.

AstraZeneca, Johnson and Johnson, and other vaccinemakers have not yet applied in North America for clinical evaluation of their vaccines in the pediatric population.

Importance of clinical trials in vaccine trust and confidence It cannot be gainsaid that building confidence in the trustworthiness of COVID-19 vaccines for children is critical. It would go a long way overcoming vaccine hesitancy and convincing more parents to bring their infants and children for immunization. In recognition of this need and with the support of the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Pediatric Society has developed for its members a learning module to “counter misinformation about COVID-19 with clear, evidencebased information; initiate discussions regarding specific vaccine issues; recognize personal scepticism regarding the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines; respectfully address vaccine hesitancy, using clear, evidencebased information; and build public confidence regarding the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.”

Insights from the participants in the clinical trials From the children: “I just trusted the science; I knew it was tested in adults. I was really just joining, hoping that maybe I could get vaccinated and help out science.”

“I wanna hang out with friends, go to movies, take my mask off as soon as possible.”

“I think that it could really benefit the world, and I think it could also help scientists know more about the coronavirus.”

“It’s really not scary. There’s nothing dangerous or intimidating about it; I hope others my age join the study.”

From the parents: “I’m happy that he’s doing his bit for science.”

“With the Pfizer study, no major side effects have been reported so far, so that made me comfortable with enrolling him as well. By being part of this study, we help others. It’s a small contribution to the field.”

“I imagine many parents these days would think I was quite nuts, but I think the thing about a clinical trial is there are lots of safety mechanisms built into that, so you’re not totally in the dark, and it’s really exciting to be involved in research.

“She’s got a big heart. She obviously had no fear of this. I guess I’m more afraid of COVID than I am of the vaccine. It was excitement, it was pride, it was an understanding that life is about more than just you.”

Words from world renown pandemic expert Indeed, a pediatric vaccine is a milestone in the war against the pandemic. It will help protect children and the community at large and will help us put the pandemic behind us. On this note, let me conclude with the words of Dr. Anthony Fauci, from the U.S. National Institute of Health and Chief Medical Adviser to President Joe Biden: “Now that we can vaccinate those kids, it’s gonna make it much, much easier to get those kids back to school without the anxiety associated with whether or not there’s gonna be an outbreak at that level.”

Bedroom feng shui decorating pet peeves Looking through interior decorating and design websites searching for examples of good bedroom feng shui isn’t as easy as it sounds. Ironically, the bedrooms that purport to have good feng shui are many times the worst offenders.

There are often many problems with most bedrooms when you are viewing them simply from a feng shui consultant’s perspective.

Let’s look at some of the bedroom problems with an eye toward feng shui that are the most problematic.

Big bed, tiny bedside tables One of the critical aspects of feng shui is the idea of balance, and in design terms, balance can often refer to scale. When you have teeny tiny bedside tables and lamps that are next to a big king size bed, it looks silly and out of proportion. Make sure your bedside tables are equal in scale.

Mismatched nightstands Sure, the design trends have geared away from matching nightstands, but a balanced and proportional bed with two similar nightstands and lamps is best in feng shui.

That’s because two matching tables looks balanced to us and that’s restful to your eye – and your mind, key to helping you relax and rest.

Another nightstand no-no?

Just having one nightstand. This shows that someone is getting the short end of the stick in the relationship and feels unbalanced.

Beds on the floor This is a casual and often contemporary way to place the bed, but it’s not good feng shui.

It doesn’t allow the sleeper to easily get out of bed and instead must crawl out of the bed to get up. This isn’t a command type of sleep position when you can’t stand up when getting out of bed. It also symbolizes a lack of control in one’s life.

Pendant lamps over nightstands Although popular in decorating now, having something hovering over your head isn’t good feng shui in general, and particularly so, when you’re in bed. It can cause a sense of irritation, stress, and a feeling of pressure that can result in insomnia or create arguments between couples.

Overhead accessories When sleeping in bed, having a large piece of artwork, shelves, and accessories is not just bad feng shui but it can also be harmful. In California where earthquakes are more common, Californians know that having a large piece of artwork over the bed could be dangerous in the event of a quake.

In 2004, R&B singer Teena Marie was struck on the head by a large piece of artwork that left her with seizures until her death in 2010, which some say was by a seizure that was a result of her 2004 injury. Today even clocks are being placed over beds and this is a very negative symbol for the sleeping and prone body that is representative of death.

Shelves Shelves come with a set of feng shui concerns, especially those that you sit in front of at work or that are aimed at you when you’re in bed. In general, shelves should be closed in the bedroom and shelves that float and have open corners, are especially harmful in the bedroom. Another serious feng shui problem is a shelf over the head of the bed.

Avoid these and they add pressure to the occupants of the room and, potentially, arguments or headaches.

Plants It seems like good feng shui, and they’re perfectly fine to have in a photograph of a bedroom if your bedroom is being featured in a decorating magazine or website, but outside of that, plants and flowers should never be in any bedroom. They create a drain on relationships and health. Although regarded as good feng shui for bedrooms, plants are anything but that.

No headboard There’s a casual decorating look of going without a headboard, but instead of appearing casual, it looks unfinished, like a chair without a back.

creates a sense of discomfort and inability to relax fully or feel supported. A bed always looks better, sleeps better, and provides more support and enjoyment when there is a solid headboard behind it.

Lyn Dalit was awarded the 2020 ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence last fall based on her high school GPA, a group interview, and an essay in response to the question, “How does an open dialogue about mental wellness impact the way Filipinos engage with the global community in the future?”

The following essay was her submission.

Willful ignorance is a cause of prejudice and creates barriers to societal progression. Conversely, open and honest discourse is the key to societal improvement. Our world is one of bubbling turmoil, of social revolt, and of demands for structural and systemic change. However, if we aim to change the world, we must turn inwards. In order to progress we must prepare to face resistance from “the other side,” and to accept that we ourselves may be in the wrong. In the case of Filipino children and their parents and family, the most significant point of contention, arguably, is cultural intergenerational differences.

Tradition is a significant aspect of Filipino culture, seeming to permeate both Western communities, and those in the Philippines. In my experience, it is a part of Filipino tradition to be devoutly Catholic. Maria Luisa’s mother in Jezebel (Danan) encourages her daily to practice her religion by sending her bible verses through text. Christianity pushes its followers, women especially, to lead a conservative lifestyle, which Maria seems to rebel against.

Maria is portrayed as rather popular with men, spurning the “modest” cut of her off-shoulder dress and accepting it only when she adjusts it to conform to Western fashion. She initially rejects her mother’s contact.

However, once Maria connects to Filipino culture through her friend’s traditional possessions (such as the cotillion dress fabric), she realizes that the difference between her and her mom’s ideologies is that her mom still clings to life in the Philippines – “immigrant parents, they kept everything” (Danan) – while Maria tries to adapt to Western expectations. The beach scenes symbolically convey this, where Maria’s mother calls her back to safety. Maria’s mother learned the best way to succeed was to stay modest and conservative, and Maria, being surrounded by liberal ideals, felt that her best chances lay in being creative and risky.

Once we understand each other’s stances by rifling through different points of view, our relationships switch from those with negative connotation – Jezebel – to those of openness, richness, and opportunity, much like the ocean of the Dyesebel. In this way we can better understand each other’s motivations.

Intergenerational cultural differences in Filipino culture and this pool contains arguably the most toxic behaviour. There is child-comparison, body shaming, judgement of income and occupation (Pasion). While some jabs may be humorous, they serve to perpetuate the harmful pressure Filipinos place on each other.

Being forbidden to question the ideologies of our elders forbids us from forming new ideas of our own, which could change the world. Instead, our decisions, our prejudices are formed for us.

Our passions are funnelled into careers that would bring financial security. It is difficult for elder family members to confront the problems of the new generation, such as mental health problems.

This may simply be because they were taught in their upbringing that being emotional equated to being weak (Pasion), when today, children are taught that being emotional helps them be in touch with their mental health.

Following traditions may lead to intergenerational rifts, weakening our potential global impact.

We can perpetuate a strong, positive, and healthy image of the Filipino culture, and our children, our voices, our talent, and our potential can be heard on the global level. First, we must identify the traditions and toxic cultural norms holding us back.

We must call each other out and listen, though the voice within us rages back. Perhaps it is time for us to leave behind harmful ways of thinking and encourage children to grasp the spark within them before it is lost. There is no shame

Manny Aranez to enter Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame Manny Aranez, the founder and commissioner of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in Winnipeg, will be inducted into the 2021 Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame. The official induction will be on September 25, 2021, at the Victoria Inn. Often referred to as the Patriarch of Filipino Basketball, Aranez founded the local PBA in 2001 with just seven teams.

It now includes more than 114 teams in 14 divisions.

Aranez was also an elected commissioner of the Filipino Basketball Association of North America from 2014 to 2018.

He will be inducted under the “Builders” category of the Hall of Fame.

The Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame has three categories of inductees: Players, Builders, and Teams. The other inductees for 2021 are: Players • Shawn Gray – a native of Toronto who starred with the Brandon University Bobcats 1993-98; four-time GPAC AllStar; All-Canadian selection in 1997-98; led BU to a CIAU National Championship in 1996 where he was named a tournament all-star; played professionally in The Netherlands and Belgium 1998-2001.

• JoAnne Wells-Small – recruited from Halifax, Nova Scotia; played with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, 20002006; 3-time CIAU/CIS AllCanadian; GPAC Rookie-of-theYear in 2000-01; 4-time Canada West All-Star; Canada West Player-of-the-Year and Nan Copp Award winner as the National Player of the Year in 2004-05; averaged 21.3 points per game and 6.7 rebounds over her final three seasons.

Five tips for a better night’s sleep Sleep is a remarkably productive and critical part of life; it’s the time when the brain and body recharge for another day. Yet, most of us simply aren’t getting enough sleep. Stress, everyday demands and – yes, your smartphone – are likely culprits negatively impacting your sleep. Sleep is a critical part of managing stress and making healthy choices.

Either too little or too much sleep can make it tough to function at your best. Sleep better and wake

up feeling more rested with this advice.

• Eat meals (especially dinner) at the same time each day and at least two to three hours before bedtime.

• Limit naps to 30 minutes at least six to eight hours before bedtime.

• Stay active. Any activity is good. For best results, get moving 20 to 30 minutes most days, at least four to six hours before bedtime.

• Limit your caffeine intake and avoid it after noon. Also avoid

stimulants such as decongestants and nicotine.

• Go to bed at the same time every night and get up about the same time every morning — even on weekends.

A healthy amount of sleep for most adults is seven to eight hours a night. If self-care techniques don’t help, talk to your health care provider. Sleep problems are treatable.

Mayo Clinic Q and A: Aging and changing DEAR MAYO CLINIC: I am 56 and have noticed a few things are changing as I get older.

I know as I age there will be more changes in my body and mind, but can you provide insights on what are some common things that I can expect?

ANSWER: Throughout life, your body is constantly changing, and there are some surprising changes that can occur within your body and mind. As you age, some of those changes become more obvious, like wrinkles or forgetfulness. Learning what to expect as you get older can help alleviate some anxiety with aging.

Below are some common questions from patients about aging: • I used to be 6 feet tall. Now I am 5 feet, 11 inches tall. Why am I shrinking?

When looking at height loss, some changes are normal, and some are not. You have 24 bones, or vertebrae, in your spine with discs in between each vertebra.

These discs begin to lose strength and thin as you age. This thinning process causes you to start to shrink.

The bone remodeling process becomes more disordered after age 25. This causes you to break down your bones faster than you rebuild them.

You can help prevent bone breakdown to a substantial degree

through weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, jogging, aerobics, or resistance training, and through a healthy diet rich in calcium and vitamins. Also, speak to your primary health care provider about appropriate screening for your risk of osteoporosis. Though screening recommendations differ, most organizations suggest screening universally at 65 for women and 75 for men. However, other risk factors, such as premature menopause, fractures, and hormone deficiency, can warrant earlier testing.

• I leak urine when I laugh.

What can I do?

Urinary incontinence, or urinary leakage, is a common problem, especially for older women. This issue can result from many causes, including pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, overactive bladder muscles, weakened pelvic muscles and nerve damage. The right treatment will require a proper diagnosis. Making the right diagnosis will include a full history of symptoms; a physical exam; urine testing; and possibly more advanced studies, such as urodynamic testing, or ultrasound and X-ray imaging.

Treatments are helpful, and they include behavioral modifications, dietary changes, pelvic muscle strengthening, medications, and surgery. Incontinence or voiding difficulties in men can be a sign

of an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer. Generally, I would recommend talking with your health care provider about these symptoms.

• Why am I in the bathroom again?

Nocturia, or getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, is a common problem for many people. About onethird of men over 30 make at least two trips to the bathroom after they’ve gone to bed. This is usually caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, which is an enlarged prostate. However, there are other causes, including medications; alcohol; caffeine; nighttime drinking and dietary habits; diabetes; heart conditions; and sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea.

Treatment for nocturia requires a proper diagnosis by your health care provider. This visit will involve a history, an exam and simple laboratory testing to start. Treatments include behavioral modifications, dietary changes, medications, or surgical intervention.

• Why do I have so many wrinkles?

Wrinkles are a natural part of aging that can be caused by several factors. Some common factors can include stress and sun exposure — both of which break down the elastin fibers and

collagen in skin. Exposure to air pollutants and tobacco smoke also can play a significant role.

As you age, skin becomes less elastic, and the natural oil production in skin decreases, causing it to dry out. You start to lose the fat in the deeper layers of your skin, and the crevices and lines become more prominent.

Wrinkles are also genetic.

You can slow the effects on the skin by using sunscreen; wearing protective clothing, including hats; using moisturizers; eliminating smoking; and eating a diet full of natural antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables.

If you are interested in treatment beyond these tips, talk to your health care provider or a dermatologist who can suggest more specific cosmetic options.

• Every day I seem to lose my reading glasses. Why can’t I remember the simplest things anymore?

Just like your joints, muscles and skin, your brain ages, too. While it may seem like your glasses are misplacing themselves, your brain is simply having a harder time with recall.

You may notice that you forget names or can’t remember a loved one’s birthday. You also may find it takes longer to learn new things.

All of these are usually signs of normal aging.
