Manitoba elects two Filipino MLAs

Photo by Rey-Ar After the September 10 provincial snap election, NDP’s Malaya Marcelino and the PC’s Jon Reyes secured their seats in the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. With the retirement of Flor Marcelino and Ted Marcelino’s loss to Liberal Cindy Lamoureux, only these two Filipinos won a seat in the legislature. In total, there were six Filipino-Canadian candidates in the 2019 Manitoba election. Malaya Marcelino, MLA, Notre Dame Malaya Marcelino is the newest Filipino-Canadian in the Manitoba Legislature. In her firstever election campaign she took the new riding of Notre Dame for the NDP by a wide margin with 3,361 votes. Her closest rival, Marsha Street (PC) attracted 789 votes. Marcelino is the daughter of recently retired MLA Flor Marcelino, who was first elected in 2007 and was the NDP’s interim leader in 2016. “Since April I’ve been going door-to-door almost every day and I’ve literally met thousands of community members,” said the younger Marcelino. “I’ve heard many stories from folks who are very concerned or even downright angry about See FILIPINO p9
