50 years in Manitoba The “first wave” celebrates anniversary

MANITOBA - The Philippine Garment Workers of 1968-1969 celebrated their 50th anniversary and reunion at the Canad Inns Polo Park on Saturday, September 15th. The group was the first wave of Filipino immigrants who came to Manitoba as part of a recruitment

programme to bring workers into the province’s garment industry. They arrived in Winnipeg on October 1, 1968 and, by the time the program ended in 1972, just over 1,200 Filipino workers had come to Winnipeg. Many of these workers, in turn, helped to

sponsor their friends and family to immigrate, giving birth to the Filipino-Canadian community of over 83,000 that continues to grow in Manitoba today. Jon Reyes, MLA for St. Norbert presented the Premier’s See GARMENT p16
