Sponsorship lottery is on
The government of Canada will randomly select up to 10,000 potential sponsors for the 2020 Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Program until November 3. Marco Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced details of the program on October 5, 2020. This is a return to the lottery system of selecting applications after last year’s first-come, first-served online system was overwhelmed, frustrating many who couldn’t access the form or fill it out quickly enough. The on line portal closed in less than 10 minutes. This year, Canadians and permanent residents who wish to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come to Canada can submit an “interest to sponsor” form on line over a three-week period from October 13, 2020 to November 3. IRCC will randomly select potential sponsors and send them an invitation to submit an application. Selected applicants See SPONSORSHIP p4
Alex and Allan have been trying for years to sponsor their mother, Magdalena, to join them permanently in Winnipeg. She has no immediate family left in the Philippines since the two brothers immigrated to Canada. She often visits them in Winnipeg but flying back and forth, especially during this time of pandemic, has been difficult. (Supplied photo)
