A tribute to foster moms

From nannies to nurses, Filipinos have a reputation the world over as providers of care.

In Winnipeg, an increasing number of Filipino families are continuing this tradition of care by opening their hearts and homes to Manitoba’s foster children.

Noralyn Pua and Rhodora Cruz are both long-time foster moms recognized by their respective agencies, Southeast Child and Family Services and St. Amant, for excellence in the care they consistently provide to foster kids. Both moms talked candidly about the work, joys and difficulties of being a foster mom. They discuss the complex relationships that can arise with their wards’ biological families and they challenge a popular misconception that fostering is a “money-making” enterprise.

Decency A video that’s going viral as I write this shows a number of government officials falling into murky waters in Zamboanga City after the wooden footbridge they were walking on collapsed.

Among those who fell were Negros Occidental Representative Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, Zamboanga City Representative Celso Lobregat (he also chairs the House committee on public works and highways), Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle ClimacoSalazar, National Housing Authority (NHA) district manager Al-Kwharizmi Indanan, and NHA regional director Alfonso Borlagdan.

According to reports, the incident happened as they were conducting an inspection of a housing project built by NHA contractors. There had apparently been reports that substandard materials were used in the construction of the houses as evidenced by cracks that had begun appearing on the walls

Alongside husband, David, the couple have been proud foster parents for the last 15 years, providing a home for children, ranging in age from two-day-old infants to young adults, who need emergency or short-term care until they can be reunited with their biological family.

Rhodora Cruz: pioneering Filipino foster mom When Rhodora Cruz and husband, Arthur, first became foster parents 28 years ago, they did not know of any other Filipino foster parents in Winnipeg. Since then, the Cruzes have provided permanent care to 47 children, raising each child until they reached the age of majority.

A day in the life “There’s no difference between raising my children and foster children, no difference,” Cruz explains. “Every day we are a normal family getting ready for school, preparing school lunches, driving them to their schools.

My role is to nourish, to care, to protect them from harm – any physical, emotional or mental injury.”

Pua echoes the need to treat each foster child as a family member. “My biological kids treat them like brother and sister.

They need to feel welcome, they only need love, not labelled as foster kids.”

According to Pua, foster mom duties include attending training sessions, taking kids out to activities and submitting paperwork including daily entries in log journals and financial

of many units. Interestingly, the footbridge was also part of the project, so its collapse was a confirmation that something was indeed wrong.

Unfortunately for the officials, the whole thing was caught on video and promptly posted on social media. People immediately started making fun of it, and various versions of the video have now been released, including slow motion, looped, bounced, and even one spliced with Moses throwing the stone tablets in the classic Ten Commandments movie. On the one hand, of course, the scene is funny in a slapstick sort of way.

We always have a good laugh when we someone take a pratfall.

But what I found disturbing was that no one bothered to ask if any of those who fell was injured.

It’s one thing to laugh at someone falling, another to be so uncaring as to make fun of the victims.

Laughing at another’s misfortune may be common, but it doesn’t make it right. I mean, if you look

at the video, you would see that it could have gone badly for any of the people involved.

At any rate, media reports did say that a dozen were hurt in the incident. While no details were given on the injuries, one can surmise that they suffered bruises and perhaps scratches from being hit by the wooden planks. And judging from the height of the fall (about 10 feet), some of them probably suffered worse injuries.

That they were able to walk away after the incident does not mean they were not hurt.

A friend asked me why it was that most people made fun of the politicians and officials falling, and I replied that it was probably because Filipino politicians have a certain reputation among their constituents. We even have a name for them: trapo, a portmanteau of traditional politician, which also happens to be the Filipino word for rag – and not just a rag, but also a rag that has already gotten dirty from cleaning things. Politicians are still seen as trapos; filthy and corrupt, so seeing them involved in a mishap can be very satisfying.

This has been true as far back as I can remember, and it appears

that the reputation has stuck even under an administration that has promised to get rid of corruption.

President Rodrigo Duterte has indeed made decisive steps in this area, even firing a close ally because of reports of corruption, but a lot more needs to be done.

I personally still hear of officials being involved in various misdeeds, and I have doubts that such things will ever be fully eradicated.

For me, though, the reaction to the video of the bridge collapsing also shows the dark side of the people. While there may be reason to presume that all politicians are corrupt, there is no excuse for laughing at another person’s misfortune. We seem to have lost something along the way: decency.

We’re no better than the trapos we hate if we treat them like this.

But there is often extra work involved in caring for children who might have special needs due to emotional or developmental challenges such as ADD, FASD, FAND or autism.

Cruz described, “There’s lots of driving. Lots of appointments – doctors, dentists, assessments, speech therapy, specialists. It depends on the needs of the kids.”

And both moms concur that fostering can only be possible with the support and understanding of their husbands and children.

Managing “transitions” Cruz and Pua agree that “transitions” – when kids first come and, again when it’s time for kids to leave – are the toughest part of foster parenting.

Pua relates how incoming foster kids might be going through various issues or emotions and are wary of the new family situation. Kids might alternately act out, retreat inside themselves or even refuse to eat.

Pua approaches this transition scenario by “making friends with kids.” She recommends that at this point, it’s up to “the parent to adjust by giv[ing] them space and time to speak about issues because eventually they [will] open up.”

Cruz notes that transitions can sometimes take “months before there is trust” and stresses the importance of making children “feel that they really belong.”

On the other hand, once it’s time to say goodbye, Cruz readily admits that, as a permanent care provider, it can be especially difficult to overcome attachment to a child you’ve parented for several years or even more.

But along with “lots and lots

of patience” and “compassion” both women explain the need to also “establish rules in the house” and “show toughness – just like being a regular mom.”

Pua explains if kids’ behaviour becomes unmanageable she calls in the social worker for further guidance.

Relationships with indigenous families In Manitoba, 90 per cent of children in care are Indigenous and both Pua and Cruz regularly interact with children’s families, attend family parties, community pow wows and sweet grass ceremonies. These foster moms also provide children with familiar foods like bannock and plenty of fish, noting that there are a lot of similarities between Indigenous and Filipino diets.

There is a marked difference in attitude and approach towards Indigenous family reunification and culture now compared to almost 30 years ago when Cruz first began as a foster parent.

Agency staff used to introduce Cruz to foster kids as their “new mom” whereas Pua explains that even when “the little ones want to call me mom I have to gently tell them to call me Tita (aunt)”.

Pua says that during the difficult transition period when she accompanies foster kids to see Indigenous parents, relations can be strained with parents suspicious or resentful towards her. But in most cases, relationships improve between foster parent and biological parent even to the point of true friendship. Pua says “they [Indigenous people] are very, very good people and are better than most we know.”

Cruz adds that as foster moms, “we are not only helping the kids,

we’re helping [their] families, too, by caring for children until they can get their lives back to normal because families can get in distress.”

“Bayad ang pagod mo” As for the charge that foster parents are “in it for the money,” Pua calmly states that if you’re “looking at the money – don’t foster.” She explains that her agency designates her as a “volunteer foster mother” because the small amount of money she receives ($21 per day, per child) barely covers the costs of raising kids.

Cruz adds that fostering “is not supposed to be an income” but instead “about helping kids reach the age of majority and becoming successful.”

She stated that for her fostering has meant “self-fulfillment” as she’s watched her “kids” go on to graduate from high school and post-graduate studies. Some are professionals; some have good jobs as managers and hospital workers.

Pua admits that fostering can sometimes be utterly exhausting and that it’s hard to explain to others “Bakit ka nagpapakahirap?” [Why work yourself so hard?], without sufficient material compensation.

But as she looks at Cruz, she knows there’s someone else who understands.

Pua explains, “My kids show me their appreciation.

Their families show me their appreciation by bringing a fish for us when they come back from fishing. Small things mean a lot. Sometimes my kids bring me food I like when I’m at work because they know I’m tired and hungry. At Christmas, the kids See FOSTER p5

Many first world countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia, have a long history of requiring biometric information for temporary residents. Canada followed this example in September 2013 when our department of Citizenship and Immigration introduced a requirement for a number of designated countries.

The prescribed countries since 2013 have included Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Laos, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Vietnam and Yemen. The breaking news is that this limited list is to be expanded for a majority of immigration applications as of July 31, 2018.

Yang energy is the bright energy of laughing children, blooming flowers, energy moving, and outward movement.

Yin energy is the energy of darkness, stillness, and going inwards. Both are important, but when one is out of balance, the house can become overloaded with that energy.

The problem with yin energy is that once things begin to spiral downward, it usually continues that way. That’s why when you see houses that look like they are falling into disrepair, they just continue that way.

Canada expands biometric requirements for applicants Why use biometrics Biometrics is a measurement of an applicant’s unique physical characteristic, including facial features and fingerprints. The collected information will be used to verify the identity of the individual. Biometrics is intended to: help prevent identity fraud and theft; prevent known criminals from entering the country; prevent deportees from returning to Canada without permission; prevent failed refugee claimants from re-entering the country.

The announced change also identified exemptions to the biometric requirements for the following applicants: Canadian citizens, Canadian citizenship applicants and permanent residents; children under the age of 14 and applicants over the age of 79; visa-exempt foreign nationals coming to Canada who hold a valid Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA); ministers

and accredited diplomats of other countries and the United Nations coming to Canada on official business; US visa holders transiting through Canada; refugee claimants or protected persons who have already provided biometric information and are applying for a study or work permit; and temporary resident applicants who have already provided biometrics as part of their permanent resident application in process.

The collection of biometric information inside Canada will be exempted for anyone who is applying for a visa, study or work permit until service centres are established. Otherwise applicants outside the country are directed to the more than 192 biometric service points throughout the world. The expansion of biometric requirements is something we will have to live with. It is important that all applicants check to ensure that they have met all the requirements, including biometrics, before submitting temporary or permanent immigration applications. The check will hopefully speed things up for all applicants and also keep inadmissible and dangerous foreign nationals out.

Is your house bringing you down? How to improve a yin house who has died.

Allow yourself and your loved one to move on by scattering the ashes and not by storing them in your house. Or, store them in a mausoleum so that you do not have them at home with you.

Sleeping with the pictures of a dead person in your bedroom is also not advisable nor is having pictures of relatives who have passed on in your dining room.

Dirty homes Another cause of negativity can be garden-variety dirt. No, not dirt from the garden, but just keeping the house in a dirty state.

I often go into neat homes, but frequently find that even though everything is in its place, the floors are dusty, the bathrooms filthy, and the house is in need of a good scrubbing.

If you have spots of dog urine on the carpet and cat litter smells and stains or have not mopped your floors or dusted, then it’s time to get cleaning. A dirty, dusty, clutter-filled house pulls in more negative energy as time goes by. It won’t get better, but it will get worse. Elbow grease is the cure-all here!

Cluttered homes One of the best examples of yin homes can be seen on TV shows like Hoarders. Hoarding is the ultimate yin state. Yin energy

is a vacuum. It creates a draw on energy. It’s the pull to yang’s push. When a house becomes a yin house it continues to pull more and more into it — this is the perfect example of hoarding.

Often, in hoarding homes, there is death energy — putrefying trash and food, decomposing bodies of vermin and pets that have had to “forage” and eventually starve to death or die of disease. It takes drastic action to put a house like this back into a yang state.

But most homes don’t have the extreme yin state that a hoarding house has.

Remedies Improve the yin state of your home with light, plants and flowers, movement, and cleanliness. Regular maintenance and attending to routine cleaning

and repairs go a long way toward keeping your house more yang than yin. Because, as the show Hoarders has shown us, once a house because a true house, it’s a monumental undertaking — and will require vigilance once it is cleaned up.

Simple things can dramatically improve a yin house and help to restore the balance of energy again.

A grand adventure Last month, I shared the Burgos Bunch’s exploits south of the border. To recap, we spent two weeks road tripping and chillin’ by the pool on a journey from BC to the sunny state of Arizona.

We all got tans and had our fair share of sore butts and tired backs during the approximately 6,000 kilometres of driving. On our journey we travelled through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.

With the invention of in-car DVD and mobile devices, we no longer play the license plate game. However, it was always fun to see a fellow Canadian on the road. I felt like we had an instant connection. I saw a number of BC and Alberta drivers on the road, since that was the main route to take. But I found great amusement when I saw someone from Manitoba. The very distinct green blobs, ok trees, that flank the water in between is unmistakable.

I tend to want to wave, but that would just be weird, right? Even to this day, driving around BC, when I see a Manitoban, my first instinct is to roll down my window at the stoplight and ask where they lived. Maples? North End? East Kildonan? Maybe that can be my new road trip game!

On any given road trip, part of the fun is the anticipation of getting to your destination. It’s always fun to stop along the way. It was especially neat to see almost all seasons within a few days. We had spring rain, snow in the mountains and sunny dry conditions. We never knew what to expect around the bend.

One thing is certain, the change in weather wreaked havoc on my sinuses. I’m used to the “Wet” Coast. Throw me into the dessert and I couldn’t moisturize enough!

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My mother died three years ago and I still feel like I’m grieving her loss. What do I do with all her belongings? If I think about giving them away, it feels like she’s died all over again.

We had a good time once we made it, but then I couldn’t help thinking that the drive home was going to be boring. I just wanted to get home! That’s when Izzy and I decided we should take a different route and make a couple epic stops on the way.

Not far outside of Phoenix is a place called Sedona. I’ve heard from many people that we must visit. We experienced a bit of traffic heading into the city, but there was a lot to see.

According to Wikipedia: “Sedona’s main attraction is its array of red sandstone formations.

The formations appear to glow in brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. The red rocks form a popular backdrop for many activities, ranging from spiritual pursuits to the hundreds of hiking and mountain biking trails.”

We made a couple stops in Sedona and appreciated the landscape that was billions of years in the making. We didn’t spend too much time looking around.

I’m thinking Izzy and I will visit and explore this place one day, when we have more time. It was also because I wanted to get to the next leg of our trip – The Grand Canyon.

For a long time I’ve been wanting to witness first-hand one of the great wonders of the world.

We’ve visited Arizona and Nevada many times, and the canyon would have been only a number of hours away by car, but alas, it has never come to fruition. This time, we made sure to take the detour.

We visited one of the more popular spots on the south rim of the canyon. Entering the park took

a few minutes, and parking was a breeze. But nothing could have prepared me for what we were about to see.

As we walked up the path, Izzy turns the camera on and asks me where we were. I gleefully shared with childlike enthusiasm that we were at the Grand Canyon. We approached the opening and there it was. I almost started crying. It was magnificent!

Some may ask, “What’s the big

deal with a massive gaping hole in the ground?” That is a legitimate question. However, when you realize that it took billions of years to create, it is truly a sight to see.

Let me put this into perspective: in some parts the canyon is over a mile deep. That works out to three Empire States Buildings standing on top of each other! Or thousands of Shaquille O’Neals!

There were many places to stop and many more places to

get a very close look. There were no chain link fences stopping onlookers, so one must be very careful, especially with curious little ones. I’m happy to report that the Burgos Bunch enjoyed the visit and nobody fell off the cliff.

The canyon was a fitting end to a fun-filled trip. I can’t wait for the next adventure.

Answer: As much as I would like to say you can feng shui just about everything, some things don’t yield to feng shui – and grief is one of those things. It sounds really painful for you to think about your mother’s loss and with parting with her things. I had a dear friend die of AIDS in 1992, and when friends called me to give me their condolences, they said lots of sweet things about this man, a lot of which was completely untrue because he could be the most fussy person – but that was what I loved about him!

I had quite a few good laughs, and plenty of tears, when I’d remind them that our friend wasn’t a saint or a martyr, but could be a real pill – and wasn’t that what made us love him the most?

I tell you this story because I’m sure there was something that your mom has – or did – while she was alive that frustrated you, annoyed you or got on your nerves. See her in reality – not just your loss of her. Maybe it was her afghan collection. Maybe your mom was a smoker, and now you have a box full of ashtrays and

you deplore smoking. Wouldn’t this be something you could easily part with? Try starting with those items that were connected to that frustration and donate them or just throw them away.

We often make up our minds that something is so much harder than it is in actuality. Clutter is one of those things. Once you start throwing things away or donating, you want to do more and more. If not, and the pain of grief is still too intense, it might be a good idea to try counselling. I wish you the best. And, I’m sorry for your

loss.

One family, two cultures It goes without saying that family is of utmost importance for most Filipino-Canadians, where other priorities such as careers, schooling and extracurricular activities take runner-up positions.

Although Filipinos are seen as “ideal immigrants” because they assimilate into Canadian culture well, some struggle with how to bring together traditional Filipino ways with Western views. Often, parents and children do not see eye-to-eye regarding household rules, which leads to frustration and unhappiness on both sides.

For example, when children are in elementary school, classmates might invite them to sleepovers. To the Filipino parent, this may seem pointless and commonly tell their children: “No, you have your own bed.” As they get older, some kids are permitted to go to the mall and hang out with friends, while children with more strict parents are not. Inevitably, children become teenagers and dating becomes an issue. Filipino parents can have strict rules, often not allowing dating until they are at least 18 or finished postsecondary schooling. Raising children is difficult enough, but immigrant parents face the added challenge of managing clashes between two cultures.

I have heard Filipino parents comment on how different Canadian born children are and view them as more rebellious, often not listening to their parents

as they do in the Philippines.

The most obvious reason for this being that second generation Filipino-Canadians are influenced

by Western culture. There is no way to avoid this. Schools in Canada emphasize independent thinking and problem solving.

Their peer groups do not only include other Filipinos but children of other cultures. One major difference is that the Filipino culture emphasizes togetherness, collectivism, or pakikisama, while Western views are more individualistic. Filipinos are more likely to emphasize the importance of family and friends while Westerners can place just as much importance on self and career. Neither is better than the other; they are simply different.

So how can Filipino parents in Canada raise their children in a way that harmonizes both traditional and Western viewpoints? We can get some answers by considering the four different parenting styles that exist, and the benefits and disadvantages they have.

Authoritarian parenting: “Because I said so” Authoritarian parents hold strict standards for their children and do not give explanations for their rules. Children are expected to be obedient. Failure to comply with the rules leads to punishment.

These parents try to control their children using shame and guilt and often withdraw their love.

Although this style of parenting

results in well-behaved children, studies show that they have lower levels of confidence, social skills, and happiness. As a consequence, they may perform more poorly in school.

Authoritative parenting: “These are the rules because…”

The authoritative parent is one who also has rules and standards for their children but they are more flexible and take a nurturing approach. They are open to questions, offer explanations behind their actions and allow children to express their opinions. If a child disobeys the rules, consequences are accompanied by forgiveness and emphasize love for the child. This style of parenting has positive effects because it encourages independence and provides a model of how to have healthy relationships.

Parents with authoritative styles want to be fair, yet consistent. Although this style of parenting requires more time and attention, the outcomes are worth it. Research supports that these children are happier, and are more confident in school and in social relationships.

Permissive parenting: “Well I guess you don’t have to follow the rules” Parents who adopt a permissive style of parenting do not have many rules and rarely take disciplinary action. They are seen as lenient and avoid confrontation with their children.

Although they are nurturing and responsive, they act more like a friend than a parent. Children get accustomed to getting their way and then develop an inaccurate view of social relationships.

Studies show that these children rank low in happiness levels, perform poorly in school and often cannot manage their emotions.

Uninvolved parenting: “There are no rules because I don’t care” This style is similar to permissive parenting in that there are few rules and consequences, but uninvolved parents lack warmth and caring towards their children. They rarely communicate and offer only basic needs. As can be expected, children with uninvolved parents have poor self-esteem, are unhappier, and do poorly in school.

So is there a “better” style of parenting? Research supports that authoritative parenting has more of a positive effect on children. Interestingly, it can be viewed as a harmony between traditional Filipino parenting and Western culture’s emphasis on acceptance and independence.

Some suggestions on how to adopt an authoritative parenting style are to: • Encourage and answer their questions. Try not view it as your child “talking back” or questioning your authority. Even if they are angry with you, view it as a teaching opportunity. In Canada and the U.S., schoolteachers encourage independent thinking and children take this style of learning home with them. So if their questions are shut down at home, they might find this confusing or even start to believe that they are worthless.

• Listen. Starting when they are babies, open the lines of

communication. If you let them know that you hear them, they will be more likely to seek your opinion when they are older.

• Use more terms of endearment such as “anak”, “honey” or “buddy”. This automatically softens your tone and will bring down your anger and frustration levels.

• Spend time with them, doing an activity where you can talk, such as playing board games or cooking. Take advantage of opportunities to connect, such as during car rides.

• Keep them busy. The more involved they are in school and extracurricular activities (e.g. music and sports), the less time they have to be bored and possibly engage in smoking, drugs or sexual activities. Ensure that you attend as many concerts, plays, sports games, spelling bees, and school board meetings as possible. This sends kids the message that they are important.

Even if they don’t realize it, they want to know that you are there.

• Ask for their opinions.

Whether it’s about what style of music they like or if they think their punishment was fair, this again reinforces that you think they are important. Even if you have to tell them something they don’t want to hear, at least they know they are being heard. Like everyone else, they want to be validated. That is, they want to know that they are seen, heard and understood. After all, isn’t that what we all want?

Family is family no matter what Lakeisha Rae Moreno was awarded the 2017 ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence based on her high school GPA, a group interview, and an essay based on oral history interviews she conducted. The following essay was her submission.

In 2009, approximately 4,385 Filipinos immigrated to Winnipeg and out of that 4,385 was my family of four. Up to this point, I have lived exactly half my life in the Philippines and the other half here in Winnipeg.

Growing up I had the pleasure to be raised by the greatest parents who have definitely impacted my life the most out of all the people I know. Through the interviews, I learned in depth about who my parents really are, what drove them to Canada, and how it all relates to me.

My mother was a city girl and my father was a country

boy, completely from different worlds but they had one thing in common, they grew up with close families. Growing up in a poor economy my parents were not as lucky as I am today. My mother’s family has been close to poverty and my father’s family has juggled many jobs. But they always found a bright side since they had their families, creating good memories of childhood despite the struggle, which they always like to share. Though they became successful after the challenges they had to overcome, they still felt like there was more.

My mother wanted to experience new things. My father, on the other hand, still had his ties to the Philippines.

Winnipeg wasn’t the first choice.

Not all countries were open to family migration, so one of the main reasons why my mother chose Winnipeg was because they allowed you to bring your

whole family.

“For our family, being together is more important than moving” (Moreno, L.).

My father was hesitant about leaving, but once he researched the great opportunities, he decided to go along with my mother’s wish. He said, “It will secure my children’s future” (Moreno, R.).

Despite my parents’ true feelings, they’ve always thought of family more than anything else.

Through the interviews I’ve come to realize that my family heritage is important to me because it made me who I am. My whole life is centred on family, I’ve always learned to rely more on my family than anyone else because of what I was taught: “Family is family no matter what” (Moreno, R.).

I have learned that the reason I love spending time with my family is because of the values I’ve gained through them.

In the summer of 2015, my family and I finally visited the Philippines after six years living in Winnipeg and it still feels like home. Seeing my mother happy to see her family and how they interacted made me learn family and the Philippines are who made me who I am. Moving to Winnipeg was a huge sacrifice to my parents, as they had to leave everything and everyone they knew for my family’s well-being.

“Sacrifices are endurable as long as we are together” (Moreno, L.).

With that in mind and learning about my family history, it has made me realize that nothing is more important to me than my family.

When does fainting require medical attention?

What causes fainting? Is it always harmless, or can fainting be a sign of a more serious medical problem?

Fainting happens when your brain doesn’t get enough blood, and that causes you to briefly lose consciousness. In many cases, fainting is not a reason for concern. But, in some people — particularly in those with a history of heart problems or those who faint while exercising — fainting may be caused by a more serious underlying medical condition. In those cases, a health care provider should assess it as soon as possible.

Vasovagal syncope One of the most common reasons people faint is in reaction to an emotional trigger. For example, the sight of blood, or extreme excitement, anxiety or fear may cause some people to faint. This condition is called vasovagal syncope.

Vasovagal syncope happens when the part of your nervous system that controls your heart rate and blood pressure overreacts to an emotional trigger. Your heart rate slows, and your blood vessels widen. In turn, that causes your blood pressure to drop. When that happens, your body cannot deliver

the blood your brain needs, and you lose consciousness.

This kind of fainting doesn’t require treatment.

Because fainting is more likely when standing up, though, to prevent fainting, it can be useful for people prone to vasovagal syncope to lie down or sit down with their heads between their knees if they begin to feel lightheaded or dizzy.

Orthostatic hypotension Another kind of fainting can happen when you stand up from sitting or lying down, and your blood pressure drops quickly. This causes dizziness, light-headedness or a brief loss of consciousness.

This is called orthostatic hypotension. It’s typically not a serious condition. Orthostatic hypotension often is caused by something that’s easily resolved, such as dehydration or being overheated.

However, if orthostatic hypotension happens regularly, especially if you lose consciousness, see your health care provider. In that case, it could be a side effect of a medication or due to an underlying medical condition, such as a nervous system disorder.

With a focus on Winnipeg, home to Canada’ s oldest and largest Filipino Canadian community, Alison R. Marshall

showcases current church-based and domestic religious routines of migrant Filipinos. From St. Edward the Confessor Church, the principal site of worship for Filipino Catholics in Manitoba, to home chapels, and healing traditions, Marshall explores the day-to-day celebrations of bayanihan, or communal spirit.

Drawing on experiences from Manitoba’s Filipino population, Bayanihan and Belonging reveals that religious practise fulfills not only a need for spiritual guidance, but also for community.

serious concern when it happens to people who have a prior history of a heart attack, people who have had heart surgery, or those who have heart disease or an irregular heart rhythm. In those situations, fainting could be a sign of a heart problem requiring treatment.

For people who fall into those categories, discuss any episode of fainting with a health care provider to see if additional evaluation is needed.

It’s also highly uncommon for someone to faint for no reason while doing some type of physical activity or exercise. In particular, sudden fainting without any prior warning signs, such as lightheadedness, dizziness or nausea before a fainting episode, must be assessed by a health care provider.

Although rare, young people without a prior history of heart disease may experience fainting as the first clinical symptom of

an underlying congenital heart condition.

Filipino journalist Manuel Mogato wins Pulitzer Prize “For relentless reporting that exposed the brutal killing campaign behind Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs,” Filipino journalist Manuel Mogato together with colleagues Clare Baldwin, Andrew R.C. Marshall of Reuters won the International Reporting category of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize.

Pulitzer Administrator Dana Canedy made the announcement on Monday, April 16, at Columbia University’s School of Journalism.

The International Reporting category is one of the Pulitzer Prize’s 14 journalism categories plus seven that recognize fiction, drama, history, biography, poetry, general nonfiction and music.

Mogato, Baldwin and Marshall were recognized for their work on Reuters’ series called Duterte’s War – Inside the Bloody Crackdown in the Philippines, which reported on the Philippines’ “drug war” that began in recent years.

Pilipino Express reached out to Mogato to congratulate him on this impressive achievement.

He said, “To say that I am thrilled with winning a Pulitzer Prize is an understatement. This is truly a great honour, not only for me but also to all Filipino journalists who remained committed and dedicated to truth telling. The stories behind the drug war killings are so compelling and shocking not to be told to an international

audience and the award hopefully could bring sunshine to this part of the world.”

Mogato joins the ranks of respected Filipinos who previously won the prestigious Pulitzer, namely, Carlos P. Romulo, Byron Acohido, Alex Tizon, Cheryl Diaz Meyer, and Jose Antonio Vargas. Mogato is also the recipient of Canada’s 2017 Marshall McLuhan Fellowship for Investigative Journalism.

Biography Manuel Mogato has been a political and general news correspondent for Reuters in Manila for almost 15 years, but his career as a journalist based in the Philippines spans more than three decades. He has covered major political and security events in the country’s history, from the downfall of dictator Ferdinand Marcos in a near bloodless “People Power” uprising in 1986 to the ouster of another leader, Joseph Estrada in 2001, and the meteoric rise of maverick southern mayor Rodrigo Duterte to the presidency.

Mogato covered conflicts in one of Southeast Asia’s longest running Maoist and Muslim secessionist rebellions as well as the rise of small pro-Islamic State militants who occupied the southern city of Marawi for five months until October 2017. He has also reported on the numerous failed coups from the late 1980s until the early 2000s and the peaceful transition of power through elections from 1992 to 2016.

Mogato reported on disasters and humanitarian crises such as the destructive 1990 earthquake, the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption, super typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and regional pandemics, like the Avian flu outbreak and SARS in the early 2000s.

He also reported on international diplomacy during the APEC and ASEAN Summits in various capitals in Southeast Asia as well as the nagging issue of sovereignty in the South China Sea. Before joining Reuters, Mogato was a crime, military and political reporter for local newspapers and worked for the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun for seven years covering

politics, security and diplomacy.

Mogato is a Mass Communications graduate from the University of the City of Manila (Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila) in 1983 and working on his masters in Communications Management. He is married with two children.

Also nominated as finalists in International Reporting in 2018 were the Staff of BuzzFeed News – “For a stunning probe across two continents that proved that operatives with apparent ties to Vladimir Putin have engaged in a targeted killing campaign against his perceived enemies on British and American soil; and the Staff of Associated Press – “For a devastating series that vividly showed that the human cost of the U.S.-led defeat of the Islamic State in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul was far greater than acknowledged.”

The Pulitzer Prizes have been conferred since 1917, after being established in the will of newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer. To this day, it is deemed as one of the most prestigious awards for achievements in journalism, literature, and music composition in the United States. While only U.S. citizens are eligible to apply for the Prizes in Letters, Drama and Music, the journalism competition’s applicants may be of any nationality but their work must have appeared in a U.S. newspaper, magazine or a news site that publishes regularly.

The 2018 Pulitzer Prizes will be awarded in late May at Columbia University.

First around the world Who was the first person to travel all the way around the world? Most people would probably answer, “Ferdinand Magellan” – and they would be partly correct. However, ask almost any Filipinos about Magellan and they could tell you that he died in the Philippines fighting Chief Lapulapu. That was almost 500 years ago – April 27, 1521.

Magellan didn’t survive his expedition but eventually 18 members of his original crew of about 260 made it all the way back to Spain and, in so doing, completed a three-year voyage that took them all the way around the world.

However, one member of the crew might have accomplished this feat even before the voyage was finished. Some historians have speculated that Magellan’s Malay interpreter, known as Enrique de Malacca, was the first person to travel all the way around the earth – and some have even claimed that Enrique was a Filipino.

Where did the first world traveller come from?

Enrique’s origin is the subject of some debate among historians and it has a direct bearing on whether he was the first person to circle the earth.

Back in 1511, eight years before his final voyage began, Magellan had served his Portuguese king in battles of conquest that took him as far east as Malacca, on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula. There he bought a young slave and eventually brought him back to Portugal. The slave, whose true name was never recorded, was baptized and given the Christian name Enrique de Malacca, or “Henry of Malacca.”

This was the name that Magellan called his slave but he might have just assumed that Enrique was born in Malacca because that was where he was bought. After all, Magellan’s main concern was that Enrique spoke Malay and could serve as his interpreter. Malay was the common language for trading throughout most of Southeast Asia at that time.

On at least one occasion, Magellan is known to have said that Enrique came from another place. In 1518 Magellan presented Enrique to some ministers in the court of the king of Spain as a native of the Spice Islands (known today as the Maluku Islands and formerly the Moluccas), about 600 km south of Mindanao. Magellan was trying to drum up support for an expedition to the Spice Islands at the time so it is quite likely that he was just using Enrique as a sort of promotional gimmick. Just a year later, Magellan wrote his last will and testament in preparation for

his epic voyage. According to the will, Enrique was a beneficiary, approximately 26 years old and “a native of the city of Malacca” – not the Moluccas. The will also promised Enrique his freedom and the sum of 10,000 maravedis (about $1300 Canadian today) upon Magellan’s death.

Regardless of where Magellan might have thought Enrique was born, the most reliable account of his origin is probably that of Antonio Pigafetta, an Italian scholar who served as the expedition’s chronicler. Much of what we know today about Magellan’s famous voyage has come to us from Pigafetta’s journal, including observations about the customs and languages of the people they encountered.

Pigafetta wrote that Enrique was really from Sumatra, the home island of the Malay language, directly south of Malacca and now a part of modern-day Indonesia.

Considering that Pigafetta and Enrique spent over a year and a half together on the voyage, it is quite likely that it was Enrique himself who told Pigafetta that he was from Sumatra.

The Philippine connection Magellan didn’t intend to “discover” the Philippines or even to sail around the world.

His mission was to find a water route through the Americas (the Strait of Magellan), which would be a shortcut to their ultimate destination, the Spice Islands in Southeast Asia. At that time nobody in Europe knew that the Pacific Ocean, the largest body of water in the world, separated America and Asia. By the time Magellan’s armada got to the Philippines they had been away from Spain for over a year and a half and had survived countless storms, starvation, scurvy and mutinies – and they were still not sure how far they were from the Spice Islands.

Their first Philippine contact did not make things any clearer.

The people from Suluan who met Magellan’s expedition on the Visayan island of Homonhon could only communicate with the Europeans through an improvised sign language and a few words, which they had taught to each other.

Enrique’s supposed connection to the Philippines is based on the story of Magellan’s second encounter with Filipinos.

Schoolbooks tell us that Magellan’s armada went to Limasawa, just off the southern tip of Leyte, and conducted the first Catholic mass in the Philippines with Rajah Kolambu.

The location of this event has been refuted in recent years by solid research, championed by the historian Vicente de Jesus, which shows that it likely occurred in a place called Mazaua near Butuan in northern Mindanao. It was

here that Enrique discovered that he could easily converse with the locals in his own language, Malay. This was a welcome surprise for Magellan and several other witnesses who wrote about the incident because it meant that they were getting close to the Spice Islands.

Some modern-day writers, such as Carlos Quirino, misinterpreted this story and have claimed that because Enrique and the Visayans could understand each other, Enrique must have been speaking Cebuano and therefore he must have been from Cebu. Also, because he was presumably captured in Cebu then taken to Malacca, sold to Magellan and eventually carried all the way from Spain, westward to the Philippines, Quirino concluded that Enrique – a Filipino – was the first person to travel all the way around the world.

Unfortunately, this interpretation does not stand up to the facts. None of the witnesses in the 1500s said that Enrique was from Cebu or that he spoke Cebuano to the people of the Visayas. Pigafetta said that Enrique was from Sumatra and another witness, Gines de Mafra, said that he spoke Malay to the islanders, which was the common language of trade in most of Southeast Asia. As Pigafetta wrote, “the slave [Enrique] spoke to the king [Rajah Siaiu], who understood him well. For, in that country, the kings know more languages than the common people do.”

And the rest is history…

After spending several days in Mazaua, Magellan’s armada sailed on toward the port of Cebu where they planned to buy more food and supplies. In Cebu, the now-familiar story took place.

Magellan ordered a cross to be erected on a nearby hilltop. He then met with Rajah Humabon who, with some other local rulers, subsequently submitted to Spanish rule and allowed himself, his wife and about 2200 other Filipinos to be baptized as Christians.

However, Lapulapu, one of the rulers of the nearby island of Maktan, refused to submit even after Magellan had one of his villages burned to the ground.

In the final showdown Magellan arrogantly refused the aid of hundreds of Cebuano allies who had to stand on the sidelines as more than 1000 of Lapulapu’s warriors easily defeated Magellan’s force of 49 European attackers. Magellan was literally hacked to pieces.

From page 16 Enrique’s revenge After Magellan’s death, the surviving members of his crew elected his brother-in-law, Duarte Barbosa and the Spanish captain, Juan Serrano as co-commanders of the three remaining ships of the armada. They planned to leave the Philippines immediately and head for the Spice Islands, but as far as Enrique was concerned, his slave days were done. According to Magellan’s will, he was now free and 10,000 maravedis richer.

The co-commanders saw it differently though, and told Enrique that he was still a slave and that he now belonged to Magellan’s widow back in Spain. Enrique refused to work or to leave the ship Trinidad to interpret on shore. Barbosa and Serrano bullied him and threatened to whip him until Enrique eventually caved in and stormed off the ship.

At this point Enrique apparently went directly to Humabon and persuaded him to turn against the Europeans – according to the Europeans’ side of the story. At the very least, it is likely that Enrique told Humabon that the ships were about to leave.

Humabon could not afford to lose his heavily armed Spanish protectors while Lapulapu was looking to take revenge on all of Magellan’s allies in Cebu.

Humabon had to either appease Lapulapu or he had to get Magellan’s weapons.

On May 1, 1521, Humabon invited all the Europeans to a farewell banquet, promising a big feast and many more treasures to take home to the king of Spain.

About 30 members of the crew, including the commanders, accepted the invitation. Once they were well fed, and probably drunk, Humabon’s men attacked and slaughtered 27 of the guests.

The three ships escaped Cebu and Captain Serrano was left on the shore, a hostage begging for his life while angry Cebuanos destroyed the cross that had been erected. (That’s right. The famous cross that stands in Cebu today is not really Magellan’s cross.)

Happily ever after?

Enrique’s ultimate fate is not known. He did not leave Cebu with the armada and nothing of his life after the massacre was ever reported. But for those who believe that Enrique was a Cebuano who had circled the globe, his story did not end there.

Carlos Quirino concocted a whole life story for Enrique in 1995 in his Who’s Who in Philippine History. Quirino claimed Enrique’s birthplace was Carcar, Cebu and he recounted

PILIPINO EXPRESS how pirates captured Enrique while he was fishing near Cebu and then sold him into slavery in Malacca. After the Cebu massacre he supposedly served Humabon as a Spanish and Portuguese interpreter, raised a family and lived past the age of 70 only to die just before the conquistador Legazpi could land in Cebu in 1565 to corroborate Quirino’s story.

Quirino provided no specific source for his information about Enrique in the bibliography of his book. In March 2003, four years after his death, his son Richie Quirino claimed in a series of articles by Bambi Harper of the Philippine Daily Inquirer that Magellan concealed Enrique’s true origin so that he could claim to be the first person to have circled the earth. Apparently, every one of Enrique’s contemporaries who ever wrote about him must have been part of the cover up, too, because none of them said he was from Cebu, either.

The younger Quirino also speculated that when Magellan was in Malacca in 1511, he sneaked away from the Portuguese fleet to explore the Philippines. His return to the Philippines in 1521 would have made him (and Enrique) the first person to travel around the world but his chronicler and number one fan, Antonio Pigafetta, never recorded Magellan making such a claim – nor could he make the claim if he had been concealing the fact that he had already visited the Philippines 10 years before.

Quirino’s assertion is doubtful for so many reasons, not the least of which is that Magellan never planned to circumnavigate the world. His intention was quite the opposite. The king of Spain had sent him to find a westward route to the Spice Islands so that they could avoid their Portuguese rivals who travelled the eastward route.

Magellan especially wanted to avoid the Portuguese because he had defected to Spain and his former countrymen were out for his blood. Furthermore, even if Magellan did have a secret plan to circle the globe, Enrique still would have been the first to do it when they reached the Spice Islands, one of the places that had been documented as his place of birth.

Enrique was not a Filipino but he was a fellow kayumanggi. And since nothing is known about his life after Magellan’s death, there is a possibility that he eventually returned to his home in Sumatra.

And if he got there in less than 16 months, before Pigafetta and the other 17 survivors of Magellan’s expedition returned to Spain, he might have actually been the first person to travel around the world.

What is diabetes?

by Lucille Nolasco Did you know that Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastestgrowing diseases in Canada with more than 60,000 new cases yearly? Nine out of 10 people with diabetes have Type 2 diabetes (Canada.ca) What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a lifelong condition in which either your body does not produce enough insulin, or your body cannot use the insulin it produces. The body needs insulin in order to change the sugar from food into energy.

If your body does not have insulin or cannot use it properly, the result is a high blood sugar (glucose) level. There are three main types of diabetes: • Type 1, in which the body makes little or no insulin • Type 2, in which the body makes insulin but cannot use it properly • Gestational diabetes, in which the body does not properly use insulin during pregnancy.

This type of diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born.

At present, Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented, and people living with Type 1 diabetes depend on insulin to stay alive.

It is estimated that 11 million Canadians are living with diabetes or pre-diabetes. One third of these people are unaware that they have the disease. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in Canada and the cost of diabetes is estimated to be up to $9 billion a year.

What are the complications of diabetes?

Having high blood sugar can cause diabetes-related complications, like chronic kidney disease, foot problems, non-traumatic lower limb (leg, foot, toe, etc.) amputation, eye disease (retinopathy) that can lead to blindness, heart attack, stroke, anxiety, nerve damage, and erectile dysfunction in men.

Diabetes-related complications can be very serious and even life threatening. Properly managing blood sugar levels reduces the risk of developing these complications.

There are many signs and symptoms that can indicate diabetes, including the following: • unusual thirst • frequent urination • weight change (gain or loss) • extreme fatigue or lack of energy • blurred vision • frequent or recurring infections • cuts and bruises that are slow to heal • tingling or numbness in the hands or feet • trouble getting or maintaining an erection If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to contact your healthcare provider right away. Even if you don’t have symptoms, if you are 40 years or older, you should still get checked.

Note however, that many people who have Type 2 diabetes may display no symptoms.

The good news is, that Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or postponed by making healthy lifestyle choices. There are groups

and organizations like Diabetes Canada who provide important information and resources for people living with diabetes.

And so with the return of Zumba®Yanihan sa Winnipeg this year, we will be supporting Diabetes Canada and its important programs. Last year, we were able to raise more than $2,000 for another charity, the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, with the help of our friends, families and supporters.
