From nannies to nurses, Filipinos have a reputation the world over as providers of care. In Winnipeg, an increasing number of Filipino families are continuing this tradition of care by opening their hearts and homes to Manitoba’s foster children. Noralyn Pua and Rhodora Cruz are both long-time foster moms recognized by their respective agencies, Southeast Child and Family Services and St. Amant, for excellence in the care they consistently provide to foster kids. Both moms talked candidly about the work, joys and difficulties of being a foster mom. They discuss the complex relationships that can arise with their wards’ biological families and they challenge a popular misconception that fostering is a “money-making” enterprise.
