• Emmie Joaquin – For her outstanding achievements in the field of radio broadcasting; the first Filipino woman to produce and co-host the highly successful daily program, Good Morning Philippines, in 1989 at the ethnic radio station CKJS. Social media has been getting a lot of credit for helping thenDavao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte win the Presidency in 2016. In fact, if you ask the socalled social media influencers, most of them would say social media was the deciding factor in Duterte’s victory. I’m sort of in the middle on this, but it is undeniable that social media is now the focus of anyone who wants to communicate with a large number of people. After all, it’s supposed to have made a city mayor win the Presidency.

But before Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social networks were even invented — and indeed, before even the Manila-based “national” media ever took notice — community media had been working hard to inform the people about Duterte. I was part of this pack of journalists covering the City Hall beat, and back then he wasn’t well known outside of Davao City.

He was just one of hundreds of local government officials, and it was a struggle to have stories of him land on the front pages of the “national” newspaper I was

Most mornings since the beginning of the school year, Joey was grumpy in the mornings and complained about going to school. But Grade 1 started months ago, and mornings were still a struggle.

They made sure to put Joey to bed at 9:00 p.m. every night so that by the time the family awoke at 6:00 a.m., he had gotten 9 hours of sleep. Plus, to Tess and Mark, he didn’t look tired.

After Joey’s teacher noticed that he was having trouble focusing on the lessons and was sometimes aggressive with the other kids, they took Joey to see the doctor. After the pediatrician ruled out any appetite or medical concerns, Tess and Mark were surprised when the doctor said that 9 hours per night probably were not enough for Joey.

That was — and continues to be — the main drawback of the “national” newspapers. They’re actually better called “Manilabased” because their focus is the national capital, leaving out the rest of the country from the narrative — unless, of course, the news from the regions are about conflict, killings, war, accidents, disasters, political feuds (that end up in killings), and things like that. In cases like that the news lands on the front page, and that’s bad for us in Mindanao because it gives the impression that our island is such a chaotic place when the opposite is true.

Community media, on the other hand, have a more balanced view of their part of the world.

After all, they have a stake in what goes on and are thus more involved in solutions, not just in finding fault. In a sense, community media are the first social media because they are more accessible to their audiences and are consequently

Community media is a force to reckon with more responsive. Community media report on a narrower sphere of events and persons, and so their reports, videos, programs, and other outputs are closer to the hearts and minds of their audiences.

Unfortunately, community media don’t get the recognition they deserve. They are often derisively called “local media” and are treated as secondclass citizens during media conferences where journalists from the “national media” are given preferential treatment.

This happens especially when nationally known celebrities go to the regions; “national” reporters get prime seating while the locals are relegated to the sidelines — if they’re allowed inside at all.

This is not to mention the fact that community journalists are underpaid, overworked, and often work in dangerous environments.

(In the Philippines, more than 170 journalists and media workers have been killed since democracy was restored in 1986, and most of them were from the community media.) They also tend to work

with fewer colleagues and so have to learn to multitask. They can write, take photos, edit, record video, report live, and do a host of other things. Not surprisingly, these adverse conditions have produced some of the finest journalists in the country.

To be honest, there were times when I felt what I was doing as a community journalist had little value in the grand scheme of things. But the victory of Duterte in the 2016 polls tells me this is not true. Through hard work, community journalists were instrumental in pushing Duterte to the national consciousness. It may have been a slow process, but it was nevertheless effective and proved that community media are a force to reckon with.

The importance of sleep for young children the day (if they have already outgrown naps) • My child stays awake during quiet activities, such as car trips and watching television If you said yes to all five questions, then your child is likely well rested.

If not, there are several steps to promote healthy sleep patterns: • Prioritize your child’s sleep over extracurricular activities.

Although it is great to see kids involved in sports, music, dance and other activities, if there is too much going on during the week, or if they are scheduled too close to bedtime, they could interfere with your child’s well-being.

• Make sure that your child has a healthy breakfast in the morning and avoids caffeine, which is found in chocolate, soda pop, tea and coffee. If you provide a snack before bedtime, a light carbohydrate snack (e.g. cheese and crackers) or warm milk, which contains sleepinducing amino acid tryptophan, will encourage sleep.

• Regular exercise and exposure to sunlight during the day is important to regulate sleep-wake patterns. Avoid intense exercise at least three

hours before sleep because adrenalin and an increase to core body temperature can interfere with sleep.

• Encourage your children to fall asleep on their own, and make sure that their bedroom is dark, cool, and quiet. If children wake up in the middle of the night, finding that things are exactly the same as when they went to sleep will likely get them to fall back asleep quickly.

Stay away from methods such as rocking them to sleep or playing music because you and the music will probably not be around at 3:00 in the morning.

• Eliminate television, video games and other electronics at least two hours before bedtime.

The screen light, increased brain activity, and any tension in the body can prolong falling asleep • Establish a predictable routine. Some parents choose to stick to the Four B’s at night time – Bath, Brush Teeth, Book and Bedtime. On the weekends, make sure your child goes to bed and wakes up around the same time. After Tess and Mark introduced these steps in their son’s daily routine, they saw results almost immediately. He woke up on his own and his teacher reported that he was doing better at school. They also started to incorporate changes in their own routines and sleep patterns, promoting the family’s health and wellness overall.

The reunification of families remains a top priority of the Canadian government. Their efforts stand in stark contrast to other countries open opposition to immigration or even the approach followed by the former Harper government. In December 2016, the Liberal government announced its intention to speed up spousal and partner sponsorship and they are good for their word. We have become accustomed to the good news of skilled workers arriving, our commitment to the settlement of refugees met, and now to the sponsorship of spouses, partners and dependent children.

The government has cut into processing times for spouses and partners in a significant way. We no longer read about 16-month processing times from outside Canada nor 26 months from inside the country. IRCC has made a significant impact on the vast backlog of files, bringing it down, in the case of family sponsorship, from roughly 75,000 to 15,000 in just over a year. Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussein told

CBC News it was the “humane” thing to do.

“We wanted to make sure families were not unnecessarily kept apart and family reunification is a very key priority for our government,” he said in an interview. “And that is why spousal sponsorship was, is and will continue to be a key part of our immigration system.”

The reduction in the backlog of files is a significant achievement. The reduced times were achieved by the deployment of “tiger teams,” in the words of the Minister. The use of specialized processing teams has been combined with simplifying the application process to avoid delays and duplication.

The shortcuts were not done at the cost to the government’s rigorous screening process. The vetting process has not been compromised in order to meet the targets and, yes, sponsorship must be submitted for bona fide couples.

As part of the streamlining process, IRCC has changed some

Sponsorship of foreign spouses or partners improved of the forms and requirements for the sponsorship of spouses.

Effective February 2018, if you are planning on sponsoring your spouse, common law partner, or conjugal partner, make sure that you use the current forms.

The Document Checklist Spouse (Including dependent children) (IMM5533) should have the date “02-2018” in the lower left hand corner. If you are using is out dated forms, the application will probably be returned as incomplete.

It is also important to note that Additional Family Information (IMM5406) was also changed last month. Ensure that the version you use is also dated “02-2018” on the lower left hand corner.

Another change is the requirement to include a completed and validated Schedule A Background/ Declaration (IMM5669) as part of the submission. Also, original police certificates are once again required as part of the application submission but the medial

examination is still something that is not part of the initial submission. The application must still wait for instructions from IRCC officials.

All users must ensure that the application submitted matches the requirements set forth on the “new” checklists. If the application is not complete it will be returned or delayed in processing.

“To each person, it means the world to them to make sure that application is processed quickly and that they’re reunited with their family members,” Minister Hussein said. He believes that family reunification is a net positive for Canada. “If I were to choose one of the two or three areas where there’s been tremendous success for this government, this particular change (refining spousal sponsorship) has, I think, been one of their key successes,” he said.

As a licensed consulting firm we can confirm that the processing of spousal/partner sponsorships

have improved throughout 2017 into 2018. Most cases have been positively concluded in around one year. The process has definitely improved but submissions must be complete, sponsors must be eligible and applicants must be admissible. If you are having problems putting your sponsorship submission together or are unsure about eligibility and inadmissibility, check with a licensed immigration consulting firm or immigration lawyer. The success of the sponsorship application is largely dependent on the completeness of the submission.

Finding one’s path “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Ah, the age-old question.

As a little kid, I dreamed of being a doctor. I was fascinated by science, the world; I loved to explore the outdoors; I loved people. But my grades did not reflect that I understood the concepts, and my interest and attention span waned in science class.

By high school, I was set on becoming a lawyer. I was a meticulous reader, excelled at

public speaking, and found I was analyzing everything inside and out – unpacking, deconstructing and discoursing were my favourite things to do. But by the time I graduated from university, the thought of three to four more years of school stressed me out. So I decided to do a Master’s in human rights, a topic that I had slowly started to gravitate towards in my teenage years, a way of processing my experiences as an immigrant.

I never thought I’d end up in policy. Looking back, however,

one might have been able to predict I would – but as a young person, I didn’t have a clue. It was only by living through my experiences, learning what I was good at and developing those skills, learning what I wasn’t good at and changing my course, and discovering passions previously unknown, that I got to where I am at this moment. And my path continues.

For some, the process of choosing a career is a daunting one.

The choice does not come easy, like selecting which candy bar you want from the vending machine.

There are many steps: finding an area or subject matter that you are interested in, considering your skills – and what you might want

to further develop, exploring the various occupations (positions) that work in that field, narrowing down which one(s) you would like to pursue, and developing a training plan that will get you to your goal.

And of course, it is not always this linear – people will go through the process again and again, inevitably a number of times throughout their lives, as they look to transitioning to different experiences.

Life is not static; change is the only constant. Likewise, so is one’s employment journey. Even for those who stay in the same job their whole working lives will have various opportunities come up where they are able to learn or do new things, whether they are offered a promotion or have to

adapt to innovative technologies in order to do their everyday tasks.

Career development is a lifelong process, and isn’t just about holding down a job. It’s about growing as a person, building financial stability to support oneself and their loved ones, and finding one’s place in society as a productive, contributing citizen.

Midlife career change “Life begins at 40� or so the old saying goes. By that age, some folks are almost twenty years into their career. Assuming that a person continued the same occupation for that long, that person definitely has developed a great deal of experience by now.

Some people, on the other hand, have had multiple jobs in their lifetime prior to choosing the right career. As an example, I performed different roles earlier in my career as a radio personality, voice instructor, political staffer, and as a human resource consulting associate.

After getting my foot in the human resources door, I have been able to progressively maintain a career in human resources performing

various roles as an administrator, a generalist, a compliance officer and as a quasi-legal professional.

At this point in my life, my career continues to bring me rewarding and challenging experiences. And for those reasons, I choose to stay in my line of profession.

As the workforce continues to evolve, change is increasingly becoming part of the norm. For some folks, there comes a time when they ponder making a career change at midlife for various reasons. Some may have made progress climbing up the corporate ladder; however, they may no longer like what they are doing. Or some may have realized that they cannot advance any further and fear that they may get stuck where

they are with the same boring job and limited pay.

As with any type of change, pros and cons are to be expected.

Technically, if a person starts a new career at midlife, there are approximately two more decades to retirement. Given that this age group are more confident than their 20-year-old selves, change may be a good thing, especially when the right choice is made. This could result in the remaining two decades of their career to be rewarding.

On the flip side, as exciting as it sounds to venture into a new career, the reality of midlife is often accompanied by many different challenges. For this particular age group, financial challenges are to be expected as responsibilities may include children, mortgage and other applicable expenses, particularly for those who have families.

Switching to a new career requires a lot of work and while

there are approximately two decades remaining, time must definitely be maximized. In other words, choosing a career that requires less preparation may be the most practical approach.

To assist with preparation, a person may consider using selfassessment tools to gain a better understanding of their own interests and personality type. A personality assessment such as Myers Briggs Personality Type Indicator is a popular tool that most organizations use. It is definitely one that can assist in a career planning process as it can help identify strengths, weaknesses and work preferences.

Another thing to consider in the planning process is identifying transferable skills. When deciding a new career, it may be more worthwhile to consider leveraging transferable skills versus choosing a new career that will require additional education. However, should it be necessary to obtain

additional schooling, research is a good tool to help narrow down the options. And finally, once a decision is made on a new career, commitment is critical.

Many feng shui consultants and experts write about beams and how harmful they are in the feng shui of your home or office. And, while beams are problematic, there are so many homes in the US and abroad that have beams in their architecture, making them a common design feature. So what can be done about them – and are they always harmful?

The answer, as it so often is in feng shui, is that it depends.

That’s the same story for much of feng shui, like bathrooms and kitchen, and that’s why feng shui is frequently referred to as the “art of placement.” And the placement of certain elements is what can render something beautiful or helpful – or make it troublesome.

Follow these tips and guidelines for understanding beams and their placement.

• Beams over the front door stifle growth A critical placement of beams, and in fact, all elements of feng shui are most important at the front door. The door is the mouth of chi and influences the type and quality of energy that enters your home.

When there is a beam over the door, this can create undue pressure and emotional stress, which can often result in financial difficulties, low growth or advancement. What are the worst beams over the door? The answer: the ones that form an arrow. These can be outright dangerous.

• Does beam colour matter?

In general, no, but a white beam that blends in with a white ceiling is preferred, but even that can be oppressive. Obviously, a strong color such as wood, red color, black, etc., will have more effect, and depending on the sector where the beam is, it can influence that sector’s body part, person or aspiration, such as recognition or career.

• Beams over the bed This is never a good placement, especially when they’re directly over the bed. The beams will

press on the occupants of a room while sleeping, when you are at your most vulnerable. This can create problems ranging from health and finances to relationship difficulties, headaches or body pains. Beams that cut across the bed are worse, but that doesn’t make vertical beams much better.

To remedy beams in the bedroom, it’s a good idea to sleep under a canopy bed. Canopy beds are excellent feng shui because of their protective qualities. Not only that, but they are extremely romantic.

• Beams over your head can create stress and emotional difficulties When beams are over your head, whether that’s in bed, at your desk or while sitting in a chair or sofa, the effect of the beam’s pressure can create a mind that’s always spinning, headaches, migraines or sinus problems. Not only that, but beams overhead can result in emotional stress like worry, despondency, and inability to make decisions.

The remedy is to move the bed, sofa or chair out from under the beam. If that’s not possible, adding a pair of feng shui flutes pointing up will help lift the energy of the beams so they are not so oppressive.

• Not all beams are problematic Beams are beautiful in architecture. From classical cathedrals to log cabins, beams are beautifying and add heft and grand style to rooms. As long as they aren’t directly overhead where you sit or sleep for extended periods of time, beams are a wonderful addition to a home’s look.

It’s when they symbolically cleave a couple in half or a body in bed while sleeping that beams become troublesome, or are directly overhead where you spend many hours that can make the beams go from decorative to destructive.

• The destructive beam

Feng shui and beams over your head, your door or your bed There are some beams that are much more harmful than others. These are the beams that are designed in such a way that they appear as arrows. Not only is this harmful, it is especially destructive, particularly if it’s over the door. If there is any kind of beam that appears to be pointing down and it’s over your door, check to see if the beam is structural or decorative. If it’s decorative, remove it. If it’s coloured, like the red downward pointing arrows that were installed a year before Kmart went bankrupt, it’s even more potent.

• Handling beam energy If your beam(s) can’t be moved, placing lighting at the base of the beam and angling it at the beam will symbolically burn it up. If the beam is in your bedroom, a canopy bed or a fabric canopy over the bed will handle the energy nicely. Lastly, feng shui flutes will handle the beam energy.

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My husband and I have had a very strained relationship ever since we moved into our new house. It’s beautiful with beamed ceilings in the living room and master. Could these be causing our arguments?

Answer: There are many things that can create tensions in a relationship. There’s an argument star, the 3 Jade, the 7 Red star that can make you say things you regret, and other difficulties, like plants in the bedroom or floral patterns.

But, since you mentioned the beams in the bedroom, it’s also possible that the beams above you are symbolically “dividing” you from one another.

The bedroom is always a good starting point to search for problems. Look carefully at your bed arrangement and make sure it’s properly situated so that you can see the door and that neither

Remove any plants or floral patterns in your linens or curtains. And, if you have beams above your bed, consider investing in a new canopy bed.

If that’s out of the budget, try making a canopy bed from curtains. There are many howto articles on line. What’s important is that you have a nice piece of heavy fabric over the bed to protect you two (and your marriage) from the aim of the beams. You’ll also create a romantic, protective cocoon for the two of you.

This is what my bedroom is like. We have beams over our bed,

but we have owned our canopy bed since our 10th wedding anniversary, and this will be our 28th year of marriage in June. So trust me, they work.

Now in its fourth year, the event aims to instil the importance of education and hard work, promote

involvement in the Filipino and wider community, and inspire high school and post-secondary students to pursue engaging and fulfilling careers. The PHCM has invited a set of guest speakers, identified leaders in their industries and fields, to share their stories of career development, discovering their passions and pursuing higher learning.

This year, Youth Forum for Building Success attendees will benefit from the talent and

Are e-cigarettes safe?

Most health officials will tell you they believe e-cigarettes are less harmful than a conventional tobacco cigarette. But there is still plenty of uncertainty regarding the damage that e-cigarette vapour can cause to a person’s body over time.

A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that mice exposed to e-cigarette vapour experienced DNA damage to certain organs that could increase the risk of cancer and heart disease.

Because there are so many unknowns and there is no scientific evidence that vaping is safe, Mayo Clinic experts urge e-cigarette users to be cautious.

The use of electronic cigarettes, also called vaping, has exploded in the last five years.

“There are probably 600 different kinds you can purchase on the Internet,” says Dr. J. Taylor Hays, director of the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center.

“There are 7-8,000 different solutions that you can purchase.”

Dr. Hays says e-cigarette manufacturing is a relatively

unregulated industry. And, while some people might think they are safe to vape, Dr. Hays says the harmful chemicals in that vapour are similar to tobacco smoke but at much lower levels.

“It’s safer, but it’s not safe,” he says. “What we don’t know are what long-term effects will these lower-level toxicants have.”

Dr. Hays says some patients prefer to use e-cigarettes as an

aid to stop smoking. He says, while vaping is less harmful than smoking cigarettes, there are safer and proven effective alternatives for people who want to quit smoking.

“And that’s behavioural counselling — even brief counselling — and approved medications,” says Dr. Hays.

Pinays Manitoba or Pinays MB Inc. was born as an organization in January 2016. It was originally founded by a group of 21 Filipino women led by Perla Javate. One of its aims is to recognize the needs, strengths and potentials of Filipino women in the community. It holds the annual recognition luncheon in appreciation of outstanding Filipino women, or Pinays, who have made noteworthy contributions to the progress of the Filipino community in Manitoba since the first Filipino immigrants arrived in the province in 1959.

In 2017: The late Mrs. Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros – a respected community leader who initially made her mark in the field of journalism; Mrs. Erlinda Magnaye Ramos – an entrepreneur who established Manitoba’s first Filipino-owned cake-baking business in 1971; and the Garment Workers Batch 1968 – a group of young and courageous Filipino women who left the Philippines in the mid-1960s to seek a better future overseas.

It is annually held on March 8 – a global day celebrating the

Kapuso Foundation receives support from Filipinos in Canada The GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) has once again received support for its projects this year from the Philippine Canadian Charitable Foundation (PCCF), one of the biggest Filipino charitable organizations in Ontario.

The PCCF, a regular GMAKF donor since 2010, will provide assistance to projects such as medical missions, feeding programs, and the donation of school supplies, which are also in line with the PCCF’s efforts to help poor families and calamity victims in the Philippines.

The PCCF party, led by their President Romy Rafael and Executive Vice President Rosemer Enverga, turned

over their donation to GMAKF Founder and Ambassador Mel C. Tiangco and GMAKF EVP and COO, Rikki Escudero-Catibog on January 26 at the GMA Network Center.

Every year, key members of the organization provide aid to their beneficiaries in the Philippines, which come from the proceeds of their various fundraising activities in Canada.

Their major charity event is Pinoy Fiesta Toronto, which showcases Filipino beauty, values, and culture. The event, which is also in partnership with GMA’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV, is said to be the biggest indoor Pinoy Fiesta in North America.

Pangasinan Group of Manitoba Valentine party The Pangasinan Group of Manitoba (PGM) celebrated Valentine’s Day on February 9 at the Viscount Gort Hotel with Councillor Mike Pagtakhan as the guest speaker.

Rowena Oquendo emceed the program and PGM President Freddie Sion delivered the welcome address.

Orlando & Jane Buduhan were crowned Mr. & Mrs 2018 PGM Valentines, succeeding the 2017 couple of Peter & Dolly Estrada.

Filipino language class for adults The Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers Inc. (MAFTI) is offering a Filipino language class to adults from 18 to 60 years old.

The Adult Filipino Program is open to non-Filipino speaking adults of various backgrounds, including Filipinos born in Canada. Lessons will be taught in an oral-based program around themes with Filipino and Canadian cultural components.

Victoria Cabrera, an experienced Filipino teacher in the Philippines in both high school and college, will teach the classes. She is currently a Nursery teacher at Tyndall Park School and Vice-President of MAFTI. Classes will be held at Tech Voc High School, Wall St. at Notre Dame Ave., every Tuesday, from April 10 to June 26, 2018, 6:30 p.m to 7:30 p.m. A tuition fee of $120 is required for 12 sessions.
