Canada celebrates first Filipino Heritage Month

It was October 30, 2018 when the House of Commons of Canada adopted Motion 155 declaring “June as Filipino Heritage Month” nationwide. Paulina Corpuz of Toronto, Ontario started with a petition to establish Filipino Heritage Month. Through the sponsorship of Councillor Neehan Shan, a motion was submitted to the City of Toronto Council, and with the endorsement of various individuals and organizations, the motion was approved unanimously by city council. It was then moved and introduced in the House of Commons by Liberal MP for Scarborough Centre, Salma Zahid. Most of the 69 shipping containers of Canadian trash that have been the focus of controversy in the Philippines since 2014 are on their way back to Canada. The containers were loaded onto a ship belonging the Canadian arm of the French shipping company Bollore Logistics at the port in Subic Bay in the early morning hours of May 31. They are destined for a Wasteto-Energy Facility in Burnaby BC. where it will be processed to produce enough electricity to power about 16,000 homes.
