Summer Pinoy Style Celebrating 120th Year of Philippine Independence
It’s June – it’s not quite summer yet, but in Manitoba – everyone is ready to forget the memories of winter past and eager to celebrate summer’s long, sunny days. June 12, 2018 is the 120th anniversary of Philippine independence. For the local Filipino community, it has been a longtime tradition to salute Philippine heritage in June. (PHCM), with representatives of its member organizations, will raise the Philippine flag on Saturday, June 9, at 9:00 a.m. at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM) grounds. This marks the official beginning of a weeklong celebration of Philippine heritage for the community. “I strongly believe that we have yet to be a Philippine community united with one strong voice
and not “whispers” from the less than a hundred groups we have. My dream is to have a council, a representative body that will bind us together to deal with important concerns guided by values of respect, positive attitude, trust and integrity… Stronger Together!” said PHCM President Perla Javate. On the same day, June 9, beginning at 10:30 a.m., Philippine organizations under the auspices of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival (MFSF) will have a colourful cultural parade from Watson St. to the Maples Multiplex. The parade signals the start of MFSF’s two-day event with a very busy line-up of activities that are all happening at the Maples Multiplex and its grounds. “Being Filipino is synonymous to the words ‘coming together.’ We come together for both the simplest reasons and for the grandest ones.
