Stopping the brain drain in health care

by Diwa Marcelino WINNIPEG – According to the World Health Organization (WHO) more than 100,000 nurses left the Philippines between 1992 and 2004. That averages to over 8,000 nurses yearly. However over the past few years that statistic has more than doubled to an average of 19,000 nurses leaving yearly.

Doctors are also training to become nurses in order to find better luck and higher wages abroad as well.

Hey Jude Jude was a boy of 14 when we first met him on the white sand beaches of Dahican, Mati City, Davao Oriental. He was an “Amihan Boy,” one of many kids stationed at the Amihan sa Dahican resort who make a living by giving surfing and skimboarding lessons to tourists and locals alike. Like the other Amihan Boys, he was highly skilled in the two sports and, in between lessons, would be out in the water skimming on the water or riding the waves.

It was Jude who approached us (my son, to be exact) to offer lessons, and I quickly became curious because he spoke in Tagalog and not Bisaya, the language spoken in Mati (and many parts of Mindanao). “Tagasaan ka? (Where are you from?),” I asked. “Taga-Monumento ako (I’m from Monumento),” he replied, and that got me more interested because that place in Caloocan City is only about two kilometers from my hometown of Tugatog in Malabon City, Metro Manila.

“Ano’ng ginagawa mo dito?

(What are you doing here?)” I pressed, and he replied that he had been left there by his father a year or two before. “Saan siya pumunta? (Where did he go?)” I asked, but he said he didn’t know.

All Jude could tell us was that his father brought him to Dahican from Monumento and then left him there. He couldn’t even explain why his father chose Dahican of all places in the world; he had no relatives there, no friends, and no form of support. “Basta iniwan lang ako dito (He just left me here),” Jude said.

As fate would have it, though, Dahican is where George Plaza lives. Jun, as he is better known, is a hero of sorts in these parts: an environmentalist, he has also taken on the role of guardian to young boys who stay in Dahican.

Over the years he has mentored dozens, teaching them not just to surf and skimboard but also to take care of the beach. The Amihan Boys are the virtual caretakers of Dahican, cleaning up the area and reminding visitors to pick up after themselves.

Jude thus had someone to take care of him, at least a little. He still did not have a house, but he could stay in one of the tents at the beach resort. At the time we met him, Jude had been living there for about two years, earning money for food by giving lessons. He also had dreamt of becoming good enough to compete in surfing and skimboarding events, like his idol

“Gusto mo bang umuwi? (Do you want to go home?)” I asked him, but he said there was no one waiting for him in Monumento.

He can no longer remember what happened to his mother, but she was already absent in his life at that time. He did, however, have a grandmother in Balanga, Bataan.

He said if he had a chance, he would like to go to her.

In my head I hatched a plan to raise some money to fly Jude from Mindanao to Luzon so he could be with family, but before that effort could be launched we learned that his father returned to him. Over the next two years we searched for him in Dahican but couldn’t find him, leading us to believe his father had taken him somewhere — to a better life, we hoped.

Then a few weeks ago I found Jude in Amihan, a little taller and speaking in fluent Bisaya.

“Nakalimot na ko sa Tagalog (I’ve already forgotten Tagalog),” he claimed, although I kept talking to him in our native language.

“Binalikan ka raw ng tatay mo (I heard your father came back for you),” I said, and he nodded with a smile. As it turned out, his father had gone to Saudi Arabia to work; he didn’t know why he returned.

All he knew was that he was back and was supporting him by driving a passenger motorcycle.

I was a little concerned about his situation so I asked Winston “Ocean” Plaza – Jun’s brother – if Jude’s father was treating him right. Yes, he nodded, Jude is in good hands. The boy had been in trouble before but his father’s presence has had a positive impact on him. Now he’s going to school and, perhaps for the first time in a long time, is looking at a brighter future.

Ocean has also been looking after the young man and promised to continue doing so. I left Dahican feeling grateful that Jude’s story turned out better than I had expected. When we parted ways he gave me a hug, thanking me for helping him. I didn’t actually do much for him; it was all by God’s grace that his life had turned around.

Body image, which is a term that describes how we see our own bodies, is very powerful and can affect our sense of confidence in both good and bad ways. I am happy to let you know that, even though your concerns are normal, you do not have to worry. Your body is just the way it should be.

Every person is different, and every body is different. This is a good thing! Diversity is important.

If we were all the same, the world would be very boring, and humans would not thrive. Diversity in body shapes and sizes means that together we are stronger.

This may feel hard to believe if we watch movies, television or Internet ads that value one type of body over another. The idea that one type of body is more valuable than another type of body is very harmful and not based in fact.

There are many different types of bodies, and all different bodies are valuable.

Believing that our bodies are not perfect or valuable can cause us stress and impact our mental health. This affects us in bad ways.

Because of this, it is important for us to accept and love our bodies the way they are. Our bodies are amazing and do great things for us.

Sometimes men worry that

their private areas are not good enough, and this can cause them a lot of mental stress. Sometimes they are worried that their penis is too small or not the right shape.

Please don’t worry about that.

Every penis is different, and there is no one penis that is better than another.

A study published in the British medical journal BJU International recorded the penis length of over 15,000 men.

Researchers discovered that penis sizes were similar in 90% of the males they studies. They also found no link between penis size and other factors including race, age, or height.

Another study in the same journal talked to men’s sexual partners, asking them about how they felt about their partner’s penis size and 85% of women were happy with the size of their partner’s penis. In heterosexual relationships, it seems that the people who worry about penis size the most is men!

Women’s bodies are also diverse; there is not one correct body shape or size. Female genitals come in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes. All bodies are good bodies, and there is not one correct size or shape of any body part.

Twenty years of the PNP Manitoba is celebrating 20 years of its successful Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program.

Since its inception, provinces such as Manitoba have benefitted greatly. The size and impact of the nominee program has both increased over time and PN now stands as the country’s second largest program for economic immigration.

The program started in 1998, when around 200 people were admitted to Canada. This modest number stands in stark contrast to projections for the current year when the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) will become more than 30 per cent of the planned economic immigration to the country. The number of arrivals over time can be seen in the graph on this page.

The PNP gives participating provinces and territories an opportunity to select applicants annually who they determine will make a significant contribution to their province and nominate them for permanent residence. At this time there are more than 60 different PNP processing streams across 11 provinces and territories open to foreign applicants.

Each one has been designed to attract immigrants based on their specific labour market and economic needs. Most provinces also have a least one stream that connects with the federal Express

Entry system, which is Canada’s principal source of economic immigration.

The federal connection is included in Express Entrylinked PNP streams, or so-called “Enhanced PNPs.” The federal/ provincial connection allows the specific province to select persons with an existing Express Entry profile to apply. Applications are not limited to study or work permit holders inside the country but also to foreign nationals abroad. Manitoba, for example, has a “Manitoba Express Entry Pathway” project to open by the fall of 2018 as part of the Skilled Worker Overseas Stream. It is important to note that applicants who pursue the federal option can submit an online Expression of Interest (EOI) profile, which corresponds to the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) or Canada Experience Class (CEC) for those who have studied or worked in Canada.

The future looks promising for all economic immigration and the PNP is projected to grow significantly over the short term (one to four years). PNPs are projected to grow by 11 per cent annually from 2017 to 2020, for a total of 33 per cent in admissions.

The federal immigration department projects that no other immigration program will grow

as fast. See the table on this page.

The projected increase by number is a reflection of the effectiveness of the PNP as an effective recruitment practice to attract the best and brightest from abroad. Of principal applicants, 20 per cent had a higher incidence of employment compared to the Canadian average, five years after landing, 52.5 per cent have employment earnings on or above the Canadian average five years after. PNPs arrivals by occupations comprise Managerial: 13 per cent, Professional: 21 per cent, Skilled and Technical: 36 per cent, Intermediate and Clerical: 15 per cent and Labourers: 3 per cent. Of landed PNs, 54 per cent hold a university degree.

The PNP continues to be an option for skilled immigration applicants from abroad or from foreign students or overseas foreign workers inside the province. It is import for potential applicants to be aware of the opportunities available from the first choice Express Entry to the second choice PNP. One or the other may serve your immigration needs.

Kids and money

by Tim St Vincent Last month Manraj, our educator in Edmonton wrote an article on children and how they learn about money. This seemed like a good topic for a lot of you, so I thought that maybe we could expand on that topic a bit this month and continue the conversation.

Most of us learned our money habits at home, both the good habits and the bad. The schools taught us how to calculate interest, but not what it meant in the real world we live in.

Our parents likely learned their money skills the same way, at home. Funny thing though is that parents, for the most part, don’t really actively teach money skills to their children, rather their children learn by observing.

Talking about money is a great taboo in our society, especially to children. So they learn in a vacuum. That leaves them open

to learning about money from other sources, TV and the Internet where slick marketing can easily convince the impressionable young person that in order to count, in order to be “worthy” in our society they must spend, own, and consume – a very dangerous cycle to get into.

How can we break this cycle?

By changing our patterns and by starting to actively teach our children about money.

Let’s start with this taboo topic – allowance! Many people feel passionately about this; some for, some against. My personal opinion? I am not a believer in allowance. A child isn’t deserving of money simply because they are my child. What does that teach them about the value of an earned dollar, what does that teach them about where money comes from and how to save? What does it teach them about delayed gratification? The answer to those questions is easy. It teaches

nothing.

If you are a believer in allowances, I suggest a small one. When they complain that it isn’t fair, that it isn’t enough, then you can start the “teachable moments.” Let them know you agree, that it isn’t enough, and they can easily and readily have more money – but they have to work for it! I suggest putting up a series of sticky notes on the fridge or maybe create a job jar bulletin board. You can post all types of jobs here. I suggest posting a series of different jobs, with different levels of difficulty and time commitment. The tougher jobs, the jobs that take more time, pay more. This way the child can pick which jobs they want to do, how much they want to work, for how much money. This will start to teach the child the value of money; that it doesn’t magically appear when you want for it, that it must be earned, and that not all jobs pay equally. Some are definitely more valuable than others.

So how small of an allowance should be paid? When should you start? Some sources say as early

as five years old. While on one hand I think that is a bit young to pay your child simply for the reason that they are your child, it is a great age to start teaching them about the value of money.

Okay, then how much? Again some sources say in the range of $0.50 to a dollar a week per year of the child. What this means at the $1.00 mark a five-yearold child would get $5 a week.

That translates into about $20 a month. I don’t know about you, but I don’t know why a five-yearold would need $20 a month!

Maybe I am just cheap. Okay, I am cheap. I would go more to the $0.50 level which works out to $2.50 a week and about $10 a month. Still sounds like a lot for a five-year-old. Wow. I am cheap!

Whatever allowance or job jar type of format you choose, it is important to teach the child about saving. A popular format for this is called the “three piggy banks.”

This is where you have one piggy bank marked for Savings, one for Spending and one for Sharing.

You can Google “three piggy banks” to get more information on this.

There are lots of great ideas out there. I have heard of one idea where the parents charge a “sugar tax” whenever their kids buy sweets with their money – this is to offset future dental bills!

This introduces both the idea of taxes to the children as well as the potential consequences of some of our choices! I have read of another idea where if the child wanted to buy something and hadn’t saved enough money that the parents would lend them the money and charge them interest, literally becoming the Bank of Mom & Dad! There are a lot of great things when it comes to talking about kids and money, maybe I will make this another two-part article.

Helping someone who is suicidal The deaths of designer Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain have once again brought suicide into the media spotlight. It is a sensitive topic to raise with a loved one who you think might be contemplating suicide.

A while back, a friend confided in me that she and her parents struggled with a situation concerning her brother. For the first time, he confided in them that he was having problems at work and relationship problems with his girlfriend. He was experiencing such great amounts of sadness that he sometimes struggled to get out of bed and had “scary thoughts.” He then began to cry, and had a difficult time answering their questions.

Fortunately, she remembered that there was a crisis phone number that she could call, as well as a Crisis Response Centre in Winnipeg. She contacted the appropriate professionals and got her brother the help that he needed.

It is important to know what

to do in the event that someone you know appears suicidal. Learn what warning signs to watch out for, the proper questions to ask, and which organizations to call.

Common signs of suicidal thinking • Withdrawing from others and isolating themselves • Expressing that they feel trapped and hopeless (e.g.

“There’s nothing to look forward to” or “There’s no way out of this”) • Expressing self-hatred or self-loathing (e.g. “Everyone would be better off if I wasn’t around” or “I’m not worth anything”) • Preoccupation with death, dying or violence (talking or writing a lot about it) • Increased use of drugs or alcohol • Accessing ways to harm oneself, including buying a gun or medication • Talking about suicide (e.g.

“I want this all to end,” “I wish I were dead,” “I’m going to kill

myself”) • Changes in sleeping or eating patterns, and mood swings • Saying goodbye to others as if they will not see them again • Giving away possessions and making sure things are in order, when it does not seem to make sense (e.g. asking someone to care for their pet in case something happen to them) Questions to ask • How are you managing with everything?

• Do you think about giving up?

• Are you thinking about hurting yourself?

• Are you thinking about killing yourself?

• Have you ever tried to kill yourself in the past?

• Have you thought about how or when you would do it?

• Do you have a plan as to how you would hurt yourself?

• Do you have access to weapons or pills or anything else that could be used to kill yourself?

Sometimes, people think that asking direct questions about suicide would do harm because

it would “give a person ideas.”

However, it is helpful to talk about things openly. It is important to listen, be sympathetic, and offer hope. Do not argue with the person, act shocked and give a lecture, or promise that you will keep this a secret. In fact, you may have to break his or her confidence and tell someone, in order to keep the person safe. It is helpful to help the person develop a set of steps that they must promise to follow during a suicidal crisis.

If a suicide attempt seems very possible in the near future, call one of the crisis numbers below, dial 911, or take the person to an emergency room. Remove guns, drugs, knives, and other potentially lethal objects nearby and do not, under any circumstances, leave a suicidal person alone.

Zumba®Yanihan sa Winnipeg 2018

On Friday, June 1st, organizers of Zumba®Yanihan, ZINs™ Lucille Nolasco, Rhiz Aco, Remie Caguisano and Rey-ar Reyes officially turned over funds raised for Diabetes Canada. With the support of their friends and families, sponsors and community partners, the group was able to raise more than a thousand dollars for the charity.

“Bayanihan” is a Filipino custom derived from a Filipino word “bayan”, which means nation, town or community. The term bayanihan itself literally means “being in a bayan,” which refers to the spirit of communal unity, work and cooperation to achieve a particular goal.

Help depression and hopelessness with feng shui A recent study by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that there has been a dramatic increase in suicide among US teens, particularly teen girls, whose suicides rates roughly doubled between the years of 2007 and 2015.

The study also reported that suicide rates increased significantly between 1999 and 2016. “From 1999 to 2015, suicide rates increased among both sexes, all racial/ethnic groups and all urbanization levels… suicide rates have also increased among persons in all age groups (less than) 75 years, with adults aged 45-64 having the largest absolute rate increase.”

This significant increase is merely a reflection of what many people today are coping with: depression. What’s the bedfellow for depression? Hopelessness.

Both of these are symptomatic with societal ills such as stress, anxiety, disconnection, and lack of a positive feeling for what the future holds.

Many times, depression and hopelessness can be rooted in a lack of purpose or fulfillment. And, at one time or another, almost everyone has experienced some sort of despondency, whether through health worries, relationship or job difficulties or problems that seem insurmountable. I know I have gone through my own low periods. A period of the blues that lingers, though, is unhealthy.

A despondent outlook can often show up in our homes.

The home of a depressed person may depict outward signs of internal struggles. There may be excess shopping, a lack of cleaning, unmade beds, isolating, dark interiors, or clutter. There are

often signs of maintenance issues, such as dripping faucets, dead plants, or peeling paint.

Can feng shui help? Yes, especially when combined with other efforts such as diet, socializing, medical help, connecting with nature and finding things to do that you enjoy.

Your eyes take in the world, and when you see your dark home with unmade beds, a sink full of dirty dishes, and dead plants by the front door, this can serve to reinforce a depressed state of mind and feeling of hopelessness.

Here are some ways to use feng shui to lift your home’s energy and improve your feeling of happiness and help you to feel hopeful again: 1. Start every day strong.

One of my favourite shows was Downton Abbey. I loved how it showed the house come alive in the mornings. The fires were lighted, the curtains thrown open and sunlight streamed in. The cleaning and cooking began in earnest, and bells rang when breakfast was being served or requested.

Take a cue from this TV show and start your day strong. Get going by establishing a set time to get up and getting a start on the day.

Try getting up earlier and having coffee or tea leisurely. Open the curtains, read a newspaper or your tablet.

Next, get dressed. Do your hair, put on make-up and look your best, even if you’re staying at home. When you look good, you feel better. Once you’re dressed, make your bed, and open the curtains in your bedroom.

Go to the kitchen and make yourself breakfast, do the dishes and put them away when you’re done. A strong start to the day is a

good way to shape your mind in a positive direction. And then at the end of the day, you’ll be getting into a made bed. That always feels better.

2. Unstick your home’s chi.

Energy in your home can get stuck, and that can cause you to feel stuck in your life. Look around your house to where your clutter zones are. Maybe it’s a stack of mail you haven’t gotten around to sorting. Clear off the tops of your kitchen counters; tackle any piles you have around the house, such as piles of clothes in the closet, or bathroom counters that you can’t see because there’s so much stuff.

3. Lift your burden. Our homes are the repository of our lives.

The happiest – and the saddest – moments are often contained in them. Yes, many homes are houses of pain. They hold the wedding dress you wore but kept even after your divorce, they hold the clock from your grandmother who has passed but stopped working years ago, or maybe it’s the ashes of pets or loved ones you can’t part with.

Whatever brings your energy down does not belong in your home. Learn to let go of old obligations to things that lower your energy and serve as reminders of what or what didn’t happen in your life. I give you permission to throw them away, donate them, or put them on the curb with a sign that says free.

4. See things differently. Too often we get in a rut in our lives because our homes look the same all the time. The picture over the sofa is always over the sofa. When you need a different picture for your life, change the pictures in your home. Take them all down and then one by one begin putting them in a different place. This will force you to see your home – and your life – in a completely different way and help you out of

a visual rut. Remember, our eyes and hearts are connected.

5. Watch for water. Water is the element of sadness, depression and hopelessness. When there is depression, there is often an excess of water. That could be symbolized by a dripping faucet, a running toilet, or even too many blue or dark colours. If there is any water that pools or an area of your yard that stays wet, this can cause your energy to lower. A good place to look is under bathroom and kitchen sinks. You may not even know you have a leak until you look for one. Get it fixed to help stop the drip, drip, drip of sadness.

6. Add movement, light, and sound. Movement can sometimes alleviate feeling depressed. Turn on fans, a TV, or your stereo with some happy music playing.

Getting movement going can get your chi going, and that’s good for your heart and spirit! Don’t forget about turning on lighting. Realtors know that during a showing, every light in the house should be turned on. This lifts the energy of the house – and a home with lifted energy is one that’s appealing to

the owners and buyers.

Keep the light on in the foyer, the living room, and the kitchen.

Add a small lamp that you keep turned on night and day, or a small night light on, so that the fire element is always present.

Make a daily practice of ringing a bell in your home to help clear stuck, stagnant energies.

Sound cuts through old energies.

Start every day ringing a bell at your front door.

7. Connect with nature. Make sure all your houseplants are healthy and lush. Look around your yard for any shrubs that have grown over the windows and cut them back. Try planting a small garden or add a pot or two of flowers to a porch.

Try to spend at least 30 minutes outdoors a day, even if that’s just taking a walk so you can observe the trees, the sky, birds, and the natural world to help you reconnect yourself to nature.

Better still, exposure to sunlight helps improve your outlook.

Many of the happiest places are ones that are sunlight-filled, such as Hawaii. Make sure you spend time outdoors, get your Vitamin D levels checked, and get some sunshine chi daily.

8. Brighten and lighten up. If you have dark or watery colours on the walls and furniture, try lightening up your home with a coat of bright paint. Sunshine or lemon yellow, bright white with colourful accents or furniture with light-coloured upholstery can help brighten your home and lighten your mood. Bright colours are known mood enhancers so pick some vibrant shades to enliven your home.

Determining the path Caitlin Keesha Badillo was awarded the 2017 ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence – Essay Honourable Mention. Her essay was written in response to the question, “Why Canada?” and is based on an oral history interview that she conducted. The following essay was her submission.

Any decision a person makes could determine the path they take in life. Ultimately your life is made up of the many decisions you make on a day-to-day basis.

Simple decisions like what kind of people you associate yourself with, or big decisions like deciding if you want to move to a different home. These big decisions are what many families in the Philippines make. They decide if they are willing to move to a big country for the better of themselves and for their own future generations.

My Mama Delia belonged to a family in which she was the oldest of seven siblings. She was born and raised with the mentality of being like a second parent to her siblings. So with that she was a natural leader.

She made a living for herself

in the Philippines, completing her studies to become a teacher.

She had a life set for herself.

My Mama wanted to strive for herself and for her daughter so she decided on moving to Canada. Canada was a place where Filipinos were starting to immigrate to because the “grass was greener” (Aquino).

Coming to Canada she learned that there was “better health care and better opportunities” (Aquino). My Mama found a job as a health-care aid and she started working to strive for a better life. Being raised in the Philippines you learn great work ethics, like being “hardworking, honest, and trustworthy” and with those great work ethics, coming to Canada as an immigrant and a women made moving here a little bit more simple (Aquino).

With the hard work that she dedicated to herself and her family she got the opportunity to sponsor her daughter to come to Canada. Coming to Canada to better herself and better her life was an opportunity that she did not have to take, but she took it. Immigrating to Canada was a new chapter in her life story. This

chapter included the different hardships she had to face to even set foot in this country, but more important, this chapter was about the opportunities that Canada had brought to her that the Philippines did not. Canada gave my Mama and my mom a better life. They both learned the value of education, work, health, and family. This chapter in her life was one big decision she had made to better her life, and this was the best chapter she wrote.

Canada is now my home and the home of my growing family.

Choosing a place like Canada has not only shown me the opportunities that come from this amazing country, but has shown me how lucky and blessed I am to be living in such a “strong and free” country (Weir). Being able to walk the streets without being scared, being able to wake up without fear of being taken away and more importantly to be able to say that I am happy with where I live. It is such a privilege that I am lucky to have because I live in this country. I don’t consider my Mama’s choice to move here a decision; it was a blessing.

Canada may always have cold weather, but the warm hearts of Canadians make the ride worthwhile.

New officers continue the cycle of giving and receiving At this year’s annual general meeting held in February, the Filipino Members ChapterEngineers Geoscientists Manitoba (FMC) announced the new executive officers for 20182019 term. They are: Chair - Ray Sator, P.Eng.; Vice-Chair - Nonie Generoso, P.Eng.; Secretary - Joy Oserio, P.Eng.; Treasurer - June Tapia, P.Eng.; Councillors - Franz Kasala, P.Eng.; Leo Aguila, P.Eng.; Michael Villanueva, EIT; Rovila Balagtas, EIT. The new officers got off to a strong start in their role by planning events that will be beneficial to FMC members and the community. Just four months into the office and four events have already been completed successfully.

Starting off with a selfinvesting workshop facilitated by the chapter’s main sponsor, National Bank, followed by a volunteers’ appreciation event to recognize valued volunteers.

These two events were held one week apart from each other in the month of April.

To continue the chapter’s mandate of encouraging professional registration of FMC members through scholarship, a fundraising event, the first of three planned this year, was organized and held on June 2nd at Applebee’s Regent. The event was

well attended by members, family and friends eager to support the fundraising effort. The proceeds from this event were more than enough to ensure at least one scholarship award and at least one Christmas Cheer Board hamper.

As community involvement raises awareness of the chapter’s presence, participation in Philippine Heritage Week, organized by Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba (PHCM) continued. In 2015, the chapter’s only participation in this annual weeklong event was attendance at the flag raising and opening ceremony. Three years later, the chapter added more events and expanded involvement by volunteering as well.

With this series of recently concluded events geared toward either giving back or receiving support, the new officers’ enthusiasm, fresh ideas, fundraising acumen and strategic planning will surely catapult the chapter to new heights.

The erstwhile Queen of All Media went to Nanay Cristy’s radio show, Cristy Ferminute, on Radyo Singko 92.3 News FM to personally thank the latter’s support during her much talked about battle with Communications Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson. Of course, Kris also took the opportunity to finally put an end to their bad blood, which dates back to their days anchoring showbiz talk show The Buzz.

It was Kris who reached out to Nanay Cristy, and Kris being Kris, her way of showing the veteran radio anchor she came prepared for the interview was via

Team Manitoba at the 2018 Canadian National Science Fair Each spring, budding young scientists gather in gyms and halls across the province to vie for the chance to represent their school for the country’s highest honours at the Canada Wide Science Fair, a showcase of Canada’s top 500 young scientists competing for nearly $1,000,000 in awards and prizes.

On April 10, Holy Cross School organized its annual science fair. Then on April 11and 12, it hosted the second annual Bison Regional Science Fair (BRSF) where students from 13 various schools entered 177 projects. Students were recognized with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, special plaques, trophies and other awards from various sponsors.

After a rigorous competition facing a pool of a hundred judges, three finalists from BRSF were selected to form Team Manitoba.

The top three: Emily Doyle (gold medal and best innovation project at the Holy Cross School Science Fair); Vrinda Vyas (gold medal and Best in Science Fair trophy at the Holy Cross School Science Fair); and Jonah Norman from Christ the King School.

They went on to compete with

other provinces at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Ottawa from May 12 to 19. All expenses for Team Manitoba, including airfare, registration, boarding, lodging, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities fee were covered by sponsors. While Team Manitoba did not win any big prizes, the experience gave each of the finalists a very good sense of accomplishment.

“Holy Cross School has demonstrated that it is a leader in providing opportunities for science students that promote scientific literacy. The School is continuously developing new programs for young minds who, empowered by their knowledge, can bring vision and creative insights to the issues and opportunities on the global stage,” said Dr. Anju Bajaj, BRSF organizer.

These events are the product of teachers in the independent school system promoting strong science programs and using Do It Yourself (DIY) Science curriculum, which puts theory into practice and engages children with a handson-approach for conducting experimental, innovation and

UP alumni breakfast fundraiser The University of the Philippines Alumni and Associates in Manitoba (UPAA-MB), Inc., invites you to its Flapjack Fundraiser Breakfast on Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Applebee’s Neighbourhood Grill and Bar, 1150 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg. Our fundraising efforts will be driven by ticket sales for the breakfast, a 50/50 draw, and individual and corporate sponsorship.

Proceeds will go towards the UPAA-MB, Inc. bursary fund.

From 2011-2013, The UPAA-MB, Inc. has awarded Manitoba bursaries to first year university students of Filipino descent who have demonstrated a strong inclination to pursue post-secondary education. The bursary reflects the importance that the UPAA-MB places on higher learning and shows its support for the Filipino community in Manitoba.

In 2014 and 2016, UPAAMB, Inc. awarded bursaries to ten deserving students from the University of the Philippines – Visayas Tacloban College (UPVTC) and Baguio campuses, respectively.

The organization has also undertaken projects that uplift the Filipino community in Manitoba. These include

an immigration info session, volunteer work at Winnipeg Harvest and Siloam Mission, and the Christmas Cheer Board Sponsor-a-Family Program, among others. We hope to continue similar projects in the

future.

PILIPINO EXPRESS of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Manitoba and Migrante Manitoba hosted a health forum at the Good Will Social Club in Winnipeg with Robert Mendoza, National President of the Alliance of Health Workers (Philippines), the largest health workers union in the country.

Mendoza presented his report of the national health situation in the Philippines, detailing the factors and consequences related to the out-migration of health workers.

In his report Mendoza stated that seven out of 10 Filipinos die without medical attention

(Department of Health, 2017).

The lack of health professionals in the Philippines, coupled with the cost-prohibitive nature of health care, means many cannot access the medical attention they need.

As a standard, the World Health Organization recommends a doctor to population ratio of one to 400.

In the Philippines the ratio is one to 24,000 (Philippine Regulatory Commission, 2017). Again, for most Filipinos, this is not new news, but a reality that many have escaped from.

What is promising, however, is Mendoza offered a solution in the form of The People’s Health Agenda.

“Free, comprehensive and progressive health care services for all can be achieved,” Mendoza said. “The first step to realize this is to stop further privatization and other anti-health worker policies like the Labor Export Policy, which causes the ‘brain-drain’ of health professionals.”

He also said it was necessary to provide an adequate health budget commensurate to the needs of Filipinos and the increase in salaries of health workers like nurses to attract and retain personnel.

“We also need to nationalize and build a pharmaceutical industry that will provide safe, accessible and affordable medicine,” Mendoza said. In order to achieve all this, Mendoza said it was necessary to “address the socio-economic and political factors affecting health, including foreign dominance in the economy, landlessness, unemployment and low wages.”

Bukod sa mayor ay boboto muli tayo ng mga konsehal at school board trustees.

Parang komedya talaga ang politika; kung kailan malapit na ang eleksyon ay doon natin nakikita ang mga di mabilang na ribbon cuttings at launching ng kung anu-anong mga programa.

Halatang halata naman na pamumulitika lang ang habol nila. Panahon na naman ng mga ligawan. Parang sitcom lang sa TV. Speaking of running, matagal tagal na rin akong tumatakbo bilang bahagi ng aking promotion ng health, wellness at happiness.

Akala ko noon ay mamatay akong may nakaipit na yosi sa kanang kamay at may hawak na alak sa kaliwa. Napakahirap mag-quit ng smoking.
